Книга Тотем і Табу примітна для мене тим, що свого часу знатно похитнула мою християнську позицію (безповоротно) -- у факті зв'язування виникнення новозавітної релігії з ритуалом вбивства батька племені, що ставалось "так часто і так повсюдно", що стало вмістом колективного несвідомого, архетипом, на який відгукнулась вся цивілізація; живим віянням, яке рознеслось хвилею по континентам. Цей вміст став тепер як вміння кожного маленького павучка плести, вміючи без слів, архітектурну павутину притаманну саме його виду.
Фрейд пояснює зв'язок страти Христа (і не його одного, бо мали місце масові страти) із тою частиною ритуалу, де за вбивство особи, що прирівнювалась у владі до божества, мав понести відповідальність наймолодший син, отже ця роль у племені, в культурі, в історії теж особлива.
Але мені приходить також інша інтерпретація. Вбивати вождів, які зловживають владою, це практика, яка не переставала тривати, напевно, ніколи - аж до яскравих прикладів європейських революцій і розстрілу царської сім'ї в росії.
Христос же (я маю на увазі фігуру архетипічну, тобто зібрану з багатьох реальних чоловіків і жінок, які рухали історію), зробив поворот сюжету: так, я загину "не своєю" смертю, насильницькою, але жертовною, в результаті вибору, який не хочу робити і радше б не робив, але це буде мій вибір, заради чогось більшого ніж особистий інтерес чи інтерес близької "сім'ї".
І культура до тошноти підігріває цей мотив, очікує жертовного Царя, який у своїй палючій амбіції не зловживає владою, а скоріше віддає себе до кінця, коли уже до такого дійшло. Тоді інертна "сіра маса" ставить собі питання, а як до такого дійшло, а кого ж ми втратили; ставлять пам'ятники і приносять цвіточки.
Приклади? Бетмен Крістофера Нолана жертовно відвозить атомну бімбу в сторону сходу сонця кудись над морем. Бімба бахкає і тепер Бетмен, дуже символічно, став ранкової зіркою, і йому відкривають монумент.
Тоні Старк жертовно кляцає пальцями (це не єдиний епізод його жертви у недавній пачці фільмів кіновсесвіту Marvel) і гине. Супергероїв там хоч греблю гати, але така роль саме у нього: звичайна людина, але винятково талановитий підприємець і винахідник.
Такі сюжети дають сучасним лідерам вибір. В короткостороковій перспективі, так, можете зловживати владою, але в певний момент вашу дуже милу сім'ю, включно з малесенькими донечками, розстріляє пролетаріат, з ганьбою, в брудному підвалі. Або, якщо смерть неминуча, самопожертва дає вихід зберегти дещо більше. Ширша публіка водночас постає перед питанням, а чи не були ми самі, в межах своєї відповідальності, корупціонерами і не-етичними вождями, авторитарними, лукавими, жовчними; чи не були ми невдячними до цієї людини, яку тепер втратили.
Поки на заході сладострасно очікують, Христос України загинув на сході.

For me, Totem and Taboo is remarkable for the fact that it used to significantly shook my Christian position by linking the emergence of the New Testament religion to the ritual of killing the father of the tribe, which happened "so often and so universally" that it became the content of the collective unconscious, the archetype to which the whole civilization resonated; a breathing of life that spread like a wave across the continents. Such unconscious content is much like the ability of tiny spiders to architect a web inherent in its species without any formal knowledge.
Freud explains the connection between the execution of Christ (and not him alone, because the executions were common) and the part of the ritual where the youngest son was marked responsible for the murder of a person who had been comparable to a deity in power; so the role of the youngest—in a tribe, in culture, in history—is also special.
But I also think of another interpretation. Killing the leaders who abuse their power is a practice that has probably never stopped going on, with the clearest examples of the European revolutions and the shooting of the royal family in Russia.
Christ (I mean herein an archetypal figure, i.e., one assembled from many real men and women who shaped history) made a plot twist: yes, I will die a death that is "not my own," a violent, but sacrificial one, as a result of a choice that I do not want to make and would rather not, but it will be my choice, for the sake of something greater than personal interest or the interests of a close "family".
And the culture prepetuates this motif ad nauseam, waiting for a sacrificial King who, in his burning ambition, does not abuse power but rather spends himself completely if the circumstances so demand. Then the inert "gray mass" ask themselves how it came to this, and whom we lost; they erect monuments and bring nicey flowers.
Examples? Christopher Nolan's Batman sacrificially drives da atomic bomb into the direction of the sunrise, somewhere above the sea. The bomb explodes, and now Batman, very symbolically, becomes the morning star, and a monument is erected to commemorate him.
Tony Stark sacrificially snaps his fingers (which is not the only episode of his sacrifice in the stack of recent Marvel movies) and dies. There were plenties of superheroes out there, but this particular role was prescribed to him alone: an ordinary man, but an exceptionally talented entrepreneur and inventor.
Stories like this give modern leaders a choice. Short term, yes, you may abuse power. At some point, however, your very nice family, including your cute little daughters, will be shot by proletariat, in disgrace, in a dirty basement. Or, if death is inevitable, self-sacrifice gives you a way to save something greater. At the same time, the broader public is faced with the question of whether we ourselves, within our responsibility, have not been corrupt and unethical leaders, authoritarians, bitter abusers; whether we have not been ungrateful to this human we now lost.
The West is still waiting in sweet anticipation. The Christ of Ukraine has died in the East.
