Hello. I have been using the Ledger wallet for a couple of years, and during all this time I have not been bothered by minor problems, such as difficulties with connecting to MetaMask. By the way, this problem is still not solved, and users of Ledger wallets remind about it on Twitter. But Ledger works flawlessly with Hive. It connects to Hive Keychain without any problems. But the new Ledger Recover service worries me.
If you missed yesterday's news, the company announced the Ledger Recover service, with which users will be offered centralized storage of a private key, or rather SEED. The private key will be divided into three parts and transferred in encrypted form to three centralized companies, on whose servers it will be stored. The service will cost about $10 per month, and the user will also receive insurance for digital assets worth up to $50,000. Of course, the service is provided with the consent of the Ledger user.
In this way, the company plans to attract more users to cryptography. It seems that everything is fine, but there are many "buts". If it is possible to remotely transfer private keys through some channel, even if it is encrypted, then as far as I understand, there is a risk of theft. And won't specially trained people be able to extract the private keys from the Ledger wallet, even if he doesn't agree to use the Ledger Recover service? In fact, there are many questions. The desire to attract more users to cryptography is very commendable. If I were Ledger, I would release a special series of hardware wallets with corresponding software. In this case, supporters of decentralization would not have to be nervous and worry about their digital assets.
It is interesting that the company Trezor, another of the largest manufacturers of hardware cryptowallets, has a similar service, or rather, a function — Shamir backup. Similar, but completely different, because it is aimed at decentralization. And this feature is free. The essence of Shamir backup is that several sets of keys are created, a certain number of which allow you to restore SEED. At the same time, each fragment is stored in a safe place at the request of the Trezor T wallet user. You can read about on the official blog Trezor. I will say that this process is not easy and requires a very careful approach.
I don't really want to change my Ledger to Trezor. This procedure is expensive (Trezor costs $186) and Trezor does not seem to support Hive. Therefore, I will continue to use my cryptocurrency wallet. But I will constantly monitor news from Ledger.

Привіт. Я користуюсь Ledger гаманцем пару-трійку років і протягом всього часу мене не турбували дрібні проблеми, на кшталт складнощів з підключенням до MetaMask. До речі ця проблема не вирішена й досі, а користувачі гаманців Ledger нагадують про це у Твітері. Зате Ledger бездоганно працює з Hive. Він без проблем підключається до Hive Keychain. Але новий сервіс Ledger Recover викликає в мене турботу.
Якщо ви пропустили вчорашню новину, то компанія анонсувала сервіс Ledger Recover, з допомогою якого користувачам буде пропонуватися централізоване зберігання приватного ключа, точніше SEED. Приватний ключ буде розділений на три частини й в зашифрованому вигляді переданий трьом централізованим компаніям, на серверах яких буде зберігатися. Послуга буде коштувати близько 10 доларів на місяць, а ще користувач отримає страхування цифрових активів на суму до 50 тисяч доларів. Звичайно, послуга надається зі згоди користувача Ledger.
В такий спосіб компанія планує залучити до криптографії більше користувачів. Начебто все добре, та є багато “але”. Якщо є можливість віддалено передати приватні ключі через якийсь канал, хоч він і зашифрований, то, наскільки я розумію, є ризик крадіжки. А чи не зможуть спеціально навчені люди витягти приватні ключі з гаманця Ledger, навіть в тому випадку, якщо він не надасть згоди на користування сервісом Ledger Recover? Насправді питань дуже багато. Бажання залучити більше користувачів до криптографії дуже похвальне. Та я б на місці компанії Ledger випустив би спеціальну серію апаратних гаманців з відповідним програмним забезпеченням. В такому випадку прихильникам децентралізації не довелося б нервувати й переживати щодо своїх цифрових активів.
Цікаво, що у компанії Trezor, ще одного з найбільших виробників апаратних криптогаманців, є схожий сервіс, точніше, функція — Shamir backup. Схожий, але зовсім інший, адже він направлений на децентралізацію. А ще ця функція безплатна. Суть Shamir backup в тому, що створюється кілька наборів ключів, певна кількість яких дозволяють відновити SEED. При цьому кожен фрагмент зберігається в надійному місці за бажанням користувача гаманця Trezor T. Ви можете прочитати про в офіційному блозі Trezor. Скажу, що процес цей непростий і потребує дуже ретельного підходу.
Не дуже хочеться змінювати свій Ledger на Trezor. Процедура ця затратна (Trezor коштує 186 доларів) та й Trezor, здається, не підтримує Hive. Тому продовжу користуватися своїм криптовалютним гаманцем. Але буду постійно моніторити новини від Ledger.
