Year-end school projects keep coming! This time, it was my turn to help my youngest daughter with her English assignment. My wife and I divide responsibilities for supporting our kids, and anything related to English falls to me. This particular time, my daughter had to give a presentation on a country of her choice, covering some facts about its culture and geographical location. Her teacher asked them to pick a country in class, and without much thought, she chose France, probably influenced by a cartoon she loves.
Papá al rescate - Ayudando a mi hija con su exposición en inglés sobre Francia
Continúan los proyectos escolares de fin de año, esta vez me tocó apoyar a mi hija menor con la asignatura de inglés. Entre la división de responsabilidades que mi esposa y yo hacemos para apoyar a nuestros hijos, me corresponde a mi lo que tiene que ver con ingles. Esta vez mi hija tenia una exposicion sobre un pais de su eleccion, para hablar de algunos datos relacionados a su cultura y ubicación geográfica. El profesor en el aula de clases les pidió elegir, ella sin pensarlo mucho escogió Francia, creo que influenciada por una comiquita que a ella le encanta.
Among the things I needed to do to support her presentation was a flag she made and colored herself, along with a poster featuring the country's map with characteristic details to back up what she was going to say. The flag was simple enough, but the hardest part was deciding what she needed to say and getting her to learn it in English. My daughter had no trouble with the introduction, where she states her name and greets everyone; she already knows how to do that. The challenge was with the new content: saying the country's name, its capital, geographical borders, and population.
Entre las cosas que debía hacer para apoyar su exposición, estaba una bandera hecha por ella y coloreada, además de una lámina con el mapa del pais con detalles característicos que apoyaran lo que iba a decir. Esto no era un problema, la bandera es algo sencillo de hacer, pero lo más difícil fue definir lo que tenía de qué decir y que se lo aprendiera en inglés. Mi hija con la parte de la introducción donde dice su nombre y saluda no tiene problemas, ya sabe hacerlo, el desafío estaba con lo nuevo: decir el nombre del pais, la capital, los límites geográficos y la población.
Her grandfather suggested we write out the English pronunciation phonetically in Spanish to make it easier for her. This was a brilliant idea because it really helped her pronounce the more complex words. Once that was sorted, I helped her with the poster. I decided to make it with the map in the colors of the flag, surrounded by characteristic elements of the country, plus other images that help identify neighboring countries, with a small legend explaining what she was going to say. I put it together in Adobe Illustrator and sent it to print in a 45x60 cm format. Everything turned out great; we both got an "A" 😅!
Su abuelo propuso para hacérselo más fácil, colocáramos de forma escrita, como sería en español la pronunciación en inglés. Esto fue muy acertado porque ayudó mucho a que pudiera pronunciar las palabras más complejas. Una vez resuelto esto, me toco ayudarle con la lámina, decidí hacérsela con el mapa con los colores de la bandera, rodeada de elementos característicos del pais, además de otras imágenes de cosas que ayudan a identificar los paises vecinos, con una pequeña leyenda de lo que iba a decir, la arme en Adobe Illustrator y la mande a imprimir en un formato de 45x60 cm. Todo quedo muy bien, ambos sacamos una "A" 😅!!!
