Yesterday, my daughter had the closing project for the second term of the school year. It was a rendition of the movie Inside Out 2, or as we know it in Latin America, Intensamente, in the form of a play. This time, the preparation of the play didn't require our intervention, as the rehearsals were at school and the script was provided by the teacher. It was an interesting experience, which at first seemed strange to me, but after the explanation of why to do this play, my opinion changed.
Pequeños actores con grandes emociones | Intensamente 2 cobra vida en la escuela
El día de ayer mi niña tuvo el cierre de proyecto del segundo momento del año escolar, fue una reparación en formato de obra de teatro de la película Inside Out 2 o como le conocemos en Latinoamérica Intensamente. Está vez la preparación de la obra no requirió nuestra intervención, ya que los ensayos eran en la escuela y el guión fue provisto por la maestra, fue una experiencia interesante, que al principio me resultó extraña pero luego de la explicación de porqué hacer esta obra, cambió mi opinión.
Doing this play isn't an original idea from my daughter's school teachers; they took it from the internet. The teacher explained to us that it's very popular to do this play to help children with special conditions, like autism, so they can reinforce their understanding of emotions, because it explains them in a visual and tangible way, something I hadn't thought of before, not even when I saw the movie.
Hacer esta obra de teatro no es una idea original de las maestras de la escuela de mi hija, ellas la tomaron de internet. La maestra nos explicaba qué es muy popular hacer esta obra de teatro para ayudar a niños con condiciones especiales, como el autismo, para que ellos refuercen su comprensión de las emociones, porque las explica de una forma visual y tangible, algo que no había pensado antes, incluso ni cuando ví la película.
This argument ended up convincing me. I started thinking after my daughter mentioned which of her classmates corresponded to each emotion, which they determined by lottery, which seemed very accurate to me, because the child would have to learn how to represent what they got, not necessarily an emotion they're familiar with. Hearing my daughter talk about the emotions and how her classmates represented them caused me some astonishment; she wouldn't normally talk about emotions. In other words, the play does work.
Este argumento me terminó de convencer, me puse a pensar luego que mi hija mencionaba cuáles de sus compañeros le correspondía cada emoción, lo cual definieron por sorteo, lo que me pareció muy acertado, porque le tocaría al niño aprender cómo representar lo que le tocó, no necesariamente una emoción con la que esté familiarizado. Escuchar a mi hija hablar de las emociones y cómo sus compañeros las representaban me causó cierto asombro, ella no hablaría de emociones de forma habitual, en otras palabras, la obra de teatro si funciona.
The moment of the play was a combination of astonishment and laughter. Seeing children with autism speak in front of an audience is quite an achievement, in addition to following a script and directions, it was impressive. They rehearsed for several months, in order to solidify their dialogues and the representation. The laughter came when the most serious child in the class represented happiness, one of the most restless patience, who had to control the character of anxiety, another very restless child with autism as well.
El momento de la obra fue una combinación de asombro y risas, ver a niños con autismo hablar frente al público es todo un logro, además de seguir un libreto e indicaciones fue impresionante. Ensayaron por varios meses, a fin de poder afianzar sus diálogos y la representación. Las risas llegaron cuando el niño más serio del salón representó felicidad, uno de los más inquietos paciencia, que debía controlar al personaje de ansiedad, otro niño con autismo muy inquieto también.
The children did incredibly well; I was surprised by their dedication. My daughter represented fear, so we put a purple flannel shirt on her, and my wife bought a hair accessory of the same color. She made her braids that looked incredible, which excited my daughter a lot and made her get more into the character. This was interesting because my daughter said she preferred to be fury, because according to her, she gets angry often, but when she saw herself dressed in the colors of fear, she accepted the character more and did her best to represent it.
Los niños lo hicieron increíble, me sorprendió su entrega. Mi hija representó a temor, así que le colocamos una franela color morado y mi esposa compró un adorno para el cabello del mismo color, le hizo una trenzas que le quedaron increíble, que emocionaron mucho a mi hija y le hizo meterse más en el personaje. Esto fue interesante porque mi hija decía que ella prefería ser furia, porque según ella se enoja seguido, pero al verse vestida con los colores de temor acepto más el personaje y puso lo mejor de sí para representarlo.

Everything was very beautiful; seeing them act full of confidence delighted me. I've known these children for several years; I've seen them in so many closing projects, so I know their development and evolution. I felt that they gained confidence and improved their communication, also how they interact with each other, and I was surprised how they regulated some of their mannerisms. It was a beautiful experience well focused on participation, well adapted to their abilities without pressuring them to do something perfect.
Todo fue muy bonito, verles actuar llenos de confianza me encantó. Vengo conociendo a estos niños desde hace varios años, los he visto en tantos cierres de proyecto, así que conozco su desarrollo y evolución. Sentí que ganaron confianza y mejoraron su comunicación, también como interactúan entre ellos y me sorprendió como se regularon con algunos de sus ademanes. Fue una bonita experiencia bien enfocada en la participación, bien adaptada a sus capacidades sin presionarlos para hacer algo perfecto.
