Desde la comunidad Motherhood les cuento sobre el último control oftalmológico de Alan que fue en diciembre del 2024 con la Oftalmólogo Especialista en Glaucoma en Colombia. Hasta ahora he presentado cada año una publicación para informar sobre la salud visual de mi hijo menor, lo cual hago desde que le diagnosticaron Hipertensión Ocular con sospecha de Glaucoma en el año 2022, cuando tenía 11 años. Alan ya tiene 13 años y ha sido muy valiente en todo este proceso. Pienso que es posible que al compartir esta experiencia puedo estar ayudando a otras mamás y papás que les interese conocer sobre el problema visual de Alan.

Por eso les presento una actualización para ponerlos al tanto de acuerdo a la revisión que corresponde al 2024, la cual estuvo bien y regular. Suena confuso, pero primero les cuento sobre lo bueno y es que en esta consulta Alan pudo hacer una tarea que le había asignado su Psicóloga para enfrentar uno de sus miedos; "quedar ciego".

La tarea consistía en hacerle a la Especialista en Glaucoma todas las preguntas que él tenía sobre su enfermedad y así lo hizo. Alan aprovechó la consulta médica para expresar sus dudas y miedos. Esa libertad de expresión fue muy positiva para él porque recibió respuestas alentadoras y argumentadas que le dieron "confianza".

From the Motherhood community I tell you about Alan's last ophthalmologic control which was in December 2024 with the Ophthalmologist Specialist in Glaucoma in Colombia. Until now I have submitted a publication every year to report on the visual health of my youngest son, which I do since he was diagnosed with Ocular Hypertension with suspected Glaucoma in the year 2022, when he was 11 years old. Alan is now 13 and has been very brave throughout this process. I think it is possible that by sharing this experience I may be helping other moms and dads who are interested in learning about Alan's vision problem.
So here is an update to bring you up to date on the 2024 checkup, which was good and fair. It sounds confusing, but first I will tell you about the good thing, and that is that in this consultation Alan was able to do a task that his psychologist had assigned him to face one of his fears; “going blind”.
The task was to ask the Glaucoma Specialist all the questions he had about his disease and he did it. Alan took advantage of the medical consultation to express his doubts and fears. This freedom of expression was very positive for him because he received encouraging and well-argued answers that gave him "confidence ”.

Lo que estuvo regular fue que la PIO (Presión Intraocular) de ambos ojos estuvo al ras del límite superior 19/19 MMHG. No entendemos la razón porque Alan cumple rigurosamente su tratamiento en Colombia y de hecho la responsabilidad que tenemos en su atención médica fue uno de los argumentos que la doctora le dijo a Alan para darle confianza y disipar su temor de quedar ciego.

La Tomografía entes de la consulta

Todos los años hay que hacerle a Alan una Tomografía Óptica Coherente (OCT) para chequear su nervio óptico. Este estudio es indispensable y debe hacerse primero para poder llevarlo a la consulta médica de control. Todo lo hacemos en la Clínica Oftalmológica Santa Lucía, en Medellín, donde han atendido muy bien a Alan.

El nombre completo del estudio que se le practicó a mi hijo es Tomografía Óptica Coherente de Nervio Bilateral. Ya Alan sabe que antes del estudio le colocan unas gotas para dilatarle las pupilas.

What was regular was that the IOP (Intraocular Pressure) of both eyes was flush with the upper limit 19/19 MMHG. We do not understand the reason because Alan rigorously complies with his treatment in Colombia and in fact the responsibility we have in his medical care was one of the arguments that the doctor told Alan to give him confidence and dispel his fear of going blind.
The CT scan before the consultation
Every year Alan has to have an Optical Coherent Tomography (OCT) to check his optic nerve. This study is essential and must be done first in order to be able to take him to a follow-up appointment. Everything is done at the Clínica Oftalmológica Santa Lucía, in Medellín, where Alan has been very well taken care of.
The full name of the study my son underwent is Bilateral Nerve Coherent Optical Tomography. Alan already knows that before the study he is given some drops to dilate his pupils.

La consulta médica

El control médico es con la Especialista en Glaucoma que lo ha atendido siempre y muy bien en Colombia. Antes de pasar a la consulta, hay un paso previo al que ya Alan está acostumbrado también. En la recepción empieza la primera revisión. Debe sentarse frente a un equipo donde la secretaria le va hacer una medición en los ojos que se le entrega a la doctora. Mi hijo se conoce el paso a paso que que debe tener en cada una de las revisiones.

The medical consultation
The medical control is with the Glaucoma Specialist who has always attended him very well in Colombia. Before going to the consultation, there is a previous step that Alan is also used to. At the reception desk, the first examination begins. He has to sit in front of a computer where the secretary will take a measurement of his eyes, which will be given to the doctor. My son knows the step-by-step procedure he has to follow for each of the check-ups.

Ya dentro del consultorio, la doctora lo saluda cariñosamente, le pregunta como ha estado e inicia la revisión de sus ojos, la cual cumple varias etapas con el empleo de distintos equipos e instrumentos. Cada revisión es con esmerada atención hacia Alan y sus ojos. Gracias a Dios.

Once inside the office, the doctor greets him warmly, asks him how he has been and begins the eye examination, which has several stages with the use of different equipment and instruments. Each examination is done with careful attention to Alan and his eyes. Thanks to God.

La revisión profunda se hace en el equipo grande donde se sienta Alan y así la doctora puede observar el interior de cada ojo usando varios instrumentos oftalmológicos sin lastimar a Alan. Por supuesto, que el examen incluye la medición de la presión intraocular (PIO) en ambos ojos y la doctora lo hace dos veces, usando un segundo equipo que es más pequeño y que pone frente a su cara muy cerquita de sus ojos.

! [English ] The in-depth examination is done on the large equipment where Alan sits so that the doctor can look inside each eye using various ophthalmological instruments without hurting Alan. Of course, the exam includes measuring intraocular pressure (IOP) in both eyes and the doctor does this twice, using a second, smaller piece of equipment that she places in front of his face very close to his eyes.

La doctora finaliza la revisión y me dice que Alan tiene la presión de sus ojos casi al límite superior (19/19 MMHG) que, aunque lo máximo es 20 MMHG está alta y me dijo que quería ver a Alan en 4 meses. Le dije a la doctora que yo tenía que viajar a Venezuela a ver a mi mamá que tuvo una fractura de fémur. Ella inmediatamente me dijo con tono comprensivo, que no habría problema y que le mandaría usar otras gotas a Alan y que nos viéramos en un año en la cita de control.

La doctora dijo que no podemos permitir que suba esa presión intraocular y con las nuevas gotas además de las que ya usa lo ayudaría. Le mandó como tratamiento nuevo MALEATO DE TIMOLOL 5 mg, cada 12 horas hasta nueva orden y continuar con las gotas LATANAPROST 0.05 mg cada 24 horas también hasta nueva orden.

Me dió la orden para el estudio que le debo hacer este año 2025 a Alan, una TOMOGRAFÍA ÓPTICA DE SEGMENTO POSTERIOR que debo llevarle para la consulta médica de control correspondiente.

The doctor finishes the check-up and tells me that Alan's eye pressure is almost at the upper limit (19/19 MMHG) and that, although the maximum is 20 MMHG, it is high and she told me that she wanted to see Alan in 4 months. I told the doctor that I had to travel to Venezuela to see my mom who had a femur fracture. She immediately told me with an understanding tone, that it would not be a problem and that she would send Alan to use other drops and that we would see each other in a year at the follow-up appointment.
The doctor said that we cannot allow that intraocular pressure to go up and the new drops in addition to the ones he already uses would help him. She sent him as a new treatment Thymololol Malate 5 mg, every 12 hours until further notice and to continue with the drops LATANAPROST 0.05 mg every 24 hours also until further notice.
He gave me the order for the study that I must do this year 2025 to Alan, a POSTERIOR SEGMENT OPTICAL TOMOGRAPHY that I must take to him for the corresponding medical control consultation.

Resalto la atención que Alan ha tenido en Colombia, con mucho profesionalismo y con calidad humanidad, algo que valora una mamá y su hijo con TEA.

Por ahora sigo en Venezuela, porque han sucedido algunos contratiempos que han hecho que los planes de regresar a Colombia se salgan de control y se retrasen. Sin embargo, Dios conoce todas las necesidades y sabe que hacer por cada uno de sus hijos. Le doy gracias a El porque está a cargo del bienestar de Alan, mi hijo menor que siempre ha sido muy valiente. Me siento orgullosa de él.

I highlight the attention that Alan has had in Colombia, with a lot of professionalism and quality of humanity, something that a mother and her son with ASD value.
For now I am still in Venezuela, because there have been some setbacks that have caused the plans to return to Colombia to get out of control and be delayed. However, God knows all the needs and knows what to do for each of his children. I thank Him because He is in charge of the welfare of Alan, my youngest son who has always been very brave. I am proud of him.
