Here in Southern California, they're telling us a heat wave is in effect. It feels hotter than normal here near the coast, but it's nothing unbearable.
Out in the valleys and mountains the heat increases dramatically. Because it's so hot today, authorities are warning us to stay hydrated and indoors with AC.
They also tell us there's a deadly virus going around and it's not safe to go outside. No reason to waste another opportunity to instill fear in people.
It's what angry politicians are good at these days! If they have to be afraid of losing power, the rest of us are going to feel it too.
So Out I Went And Found A Fungal Surprise!
Though hotter than usual today, the summer is now in full force and the days have been warm. All searches for fungi of late have come up empty-camera.
So I was rather surprised today as I looked under a shady pine tree near our home, to find a couple off caps! Heat wasn't going to deter these stems from poking up and lifting their domes.
California agaricus
Though I always have my doubts as to the accuracy of this Mushroom ID Application, it's better than I could do on my own.
It has identified this first shroom I came across as a specimen of California agaricus. If correct, these babies are toxic to eat.
I'd rather avoid the diarrhea, stomach aches, and blown cookies that are the symptoms if ingested. A warning from the App suggests I get my edible mushrooms from the market.
Yellow-staining Mushroom
ID'd by the App as Agaricus xanthodermus, these poppers are also toxic to eat. Though I wasn't planning on washing one down with cold water, it's good info nonetheless.
Neither do I trust the App, as I mentioned before. It first identified the above shroom as a Gemmed amanita. Investigative instinct tells me it's incorrect due to a general lack of yellow coloring.
What do you think about the accuracy of the Mushroom App? Was it anywhere close this time around? Anyhoo, I'm glad to have finally found some fungus to show in spite of the advancing temperature.
Thanks for viewing, for your feedback, and as always...
