With an August heat wave baking Southern California, finding fungi hasn't been easy. Fortunately, the heat brought with it a decent level of humidity. So tracking down shrooms hasn't been impossible.
I came across this baby today, just after getting home from work. It was in the bushes out back where there's plenty of shade.
Hiding under a small falling of Eucalyptus leaves, this mushroom wasn't easy to spot. It takes a trained eye. 👁️
Once the leaves were cleared away, it allowed a nice shot of the top. Gills galore show themselves off in the feature image.
Going Back To Wednesday
After I had all but given up in the heat on Wednesday afternoon, I stumbled across a wayward mushroom. Despite the heat, it was sitting smack dab in the middle of a patch of grass with the sun directly overhead.
From the looks of it, some bug or worm was burrowing its way through the center of the cap. It must have been a journey to the center of The mushroom. Lol
Oh ho! There's another hole directly on top of the cap that wasn't shown before. Was it a race to the center of the mushroom? I wonder...
There it is as I first approached. Holes and cracks are everywhere which isn't surprising. Popping up in the middle of the grass with no shade for protection wasn't this mushrooms' best decision.
Did it make it? I don't think so because the lawnmower came through yesterday. Our pine trees down the way haven't been producing mushrooms under their shady limbs. It's a place I usually find some, but I'll keep searching for next week.
Hope you enjoyed the caps and stems, and as always...
