Here are a few finds in the rain for this #mushroommonday
First off is a gross looking stink horn called Mutinus caninus.
They stink badly to attract flies to them so they can spread their spores around.
They aren't poisonous but you often find them in your garden and its not quite nice seeing these things around your plant and smelling them as well.
Here is the underside of a brittlegill or possibly a russula of some kind.
This one looks like it hatched then dried out a bit then got rehydrated again from the rain.
If this one wasn't so old I would to the taste test where you let a little piece rest on your tough to see if it burns or not. Usually with russulas they will burn badly if inedible or taste bad. I avoid all red ones to be safe. But some of these brown ones are edible around here if they don't burn your tongue. They of course have to be thoroughly cooked too to get rid of any toxins.
Here is a little brown mushroom. Possibly a fairy ring mushroom.
Of course all these little brown mushrooms could be some strange subspecies and its not wise to attempt eating them.
Here is a spicy tasting russula brittle gill of some kind. I thought because it was not red it might have been a brown edible one.
But alas the taste test proved it to be quite spicy. If you ate this thing it would definitely give you stomach upset.
Now for a May apple in August?
These used to be what would herald the morel season in spring but now I can't rely on them appearing at the right time to actually help me find morels. These things are edible but only once they've turned orange. If eaten while green they are poisonous (the usual upset stomach). I have yet to try one as critters from the forest eat them before I can find a ripe one. The wild animals must know not to eat the green ones.
Now for a little squash frond, nice little spiral. Hopefully I can find something edible soon on my forays as getting bitten by mosquitos looking for mushrooms is only rewarding if you can bring something home to cook lol.
That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
