Since its premiere in September, this series has been the subject of many comments on social networks, including of course, many reviews here on #HIVE. I've recently finished watching its first season (if others come out), and I'd like to leave my review and opinion about it. Many comments and impressions have already been made about this series, so I would also like to address another issue that has also been discussed a lot about The Squid Game: Is it a critique of capitalism? Desde su estreno en Septiembre, esta serie ha sido objeto de muchos comentarios en redes sociales, incluyendo por supuesto, muchas reseñas acá en #HIVE. Recientemente he terminado de ver su primera temporada (si es que salen otras), y me gustaría dejar mi reseña y opinión al respecto. Ya muchos comentarios e impresiones se han hecho acerca de esta serie, por lo que además me gustaría abordar otro tema que también se ha discutido bastante acera de El Juego del Calamar: ¿Es una crítica al capitalismo? ¿O al socialismo? First of all, I must say that the series, in general, is not a big deal. However, it manages to grab everyone's attention and keep you hooked until the end. Without a lot of special effects or complicated plots. It is just as many describe it, a series that in itself is not one of the best, but it keeps you attached to the screen. It is something that this series knew how to take advantage of very well, things as simple as a set of sugar figures were enough. All this, of course, added to a situation of survival and drama is what made this series go viral in the last few weeks.
Primero que nada, debo decir que la serie, en general, no es la gran cosa. Sin embargo, logra captar la atención de todos y mantenerte enganchado hasta el final. Sin muchos efectos especiales o tramas complicadas. Es justo como muchos la describen, una serie que en sí no es de las mejores, pero que te mantiene pegado a la pantalla. Es algo que esta serie supo aprovechar muy bien, cosas tan simples como un juego de figuras en azúcar fueron suficientes. Todo esto, por supuesto, sumado a una situación de supervivencia y drama es lo que hizo que esta serie se volviera viral en las últimas semanas.

The violence and drama that revolves around the characters is one of its main attractions, as it represents what human beings are capable of doing when forced to survive, not only in the real world but in the "game". The series represents this through characters who have failed in some way or another, especially economically, in society. It places them in a situation of competition, of life or death, which it seeks to somehow mirror what happens in real life.

La violencia y el drama que gira en torno a los personajes es uno de sus principales atractivos, ya que representa lo que el ser humano es capaz de hacer cuando se ve obligado a sobrevivir, no solo en el mundo real sino en el "juego". La serie representa esto a través de personajes que han fracasado de alguna u otra manera, sobre todo económicamente, en la sociedad. Los coloca en una situación de competencia, de vida o muerte, que busca de alguna forma reflejar con lo que sucede en la vida real.
The whole visual aspect of the series was quite well elaborated. The infantile, colorful and even somewhat bizarre environments are very characteristic of Asians, especially in Japan and Korea. And this is something that was handled very well. On the other hand, the characters were very well cast and played by their actors. There was a lot of chemistry between them. Perhaps the best and most recognizable is player N°001, an old man who seems to enjoy the game more than all the younger players.
Todo el apartado visual de la serie estuvo bastante bien elaborado. Los ambientes infantiles, coloridos e incluso algo bizarros, son muy característicos de los asiáticos, sobre todo en Japón y Corea. Y esto es algo que se supo manejar muy bien. Por otra parte, los personajes fueron muy bien planteados e interpretados por sus actores. Hubo mucha química entre ellos. Quizás el mejor y más reconocido es el jugador N°001, un anciano que parece disfrutar más del juego que todos los jugadores más jóvenes.
The squid game is based on going through 6 games, in which the losers are immediately eliminated by the guards with triangular masks. This elimination is basically the death of the player. But how many would be willing to give up winning the game if in real life they have miserable lives?
Durante el juego se remarca algo muy importante, los líderes están interesados en que todos los jugadores tengan igualdad de oportunidades. No quieren que algún jugador tenga ventaja sobre otros, especialmente si se trata de saber con antelación cuál será el siguiente juego. Esto es incumplido de manera "ilegal" por algunos soldados, dedicándose a otro tipo de actividades a escondidas y a través de uno de los jugadores. All this and the fact of competing wildly to survive in the game, has made many (including the director of the series himself) raise The Squid Game as a direct criticism of capitalism. But how accurate is this?

También es recurrente el hecho de que todos están en problemas económicos, no solo los jugadores, sino familiares y amigos de los jugadores, quienes deben luchar con deudas y trabajar duro para mantener su negocio y hogar. Todo esto y el hecho de competir salvajemente para sobrevivir en el juego, ha hecho que muchos (incluyendo al mismo director de la serie) planteen a El Juego del Calamar como una critica directa al capitalismo. Pero ¿Qué tan acertado es esto?
A criticism of capitalism...?
In my opinion, this series is not a reference or criticism of capitalism, perhaps only in part. Everyone will have their own point of view, but I think that to think that capitalism is this bad and inhuman is to have a wrong concept of it.I think the scene that best demonstrates this is the one in the second game. The players must choose between 4 random figures. This largely determines whether they live or not, because some figures are more difficult than others. But the players do not possess this information, they are denied to possess it. Under coercion, the players must choose a figure, because a central authority decides that this is best for everyone, equivalent to a state that restricts or blocks the free flow of information and prices in the economy, allocating or distributing resources without market criteria and individual aspects. This is the total opposite of capitalism or free market.

En mi opinión, esta serie no es una referencia o crítica al capitalismo, quizás solo en parte. Cada quien tendrá su punto de vista, pero creo que pensar que el capitalismo es así de malo e inhumano es tener un concepto errado del mismo.
Creo que la escena que mejor lo demuestra es la del segundo juego. Los jugadores deben escoger entre 4 figuras al azar. Esto determina en gran medida si viven o no, porque hay figuras más difíciles que otras. Pero los jugadores no poseen esta información, se les niega a poseerla. Bajo coacción, los jugadores deben escoger una figura, porque una autoridad central decide que esto es lo mejor para todos, equivalente a un Estado que restringe o bloquea e libre flujo de información y precios en la econonomía, asignando o distribuyendo recursos sin criterios de mercado y aspectos individuales. Esto es totalmente opuesto al capitalismo o libre mercado.

In the real world, outside the game, the series reflects in a certain way the reality of the country in question: South Korea. True, it is not a socialist country, but before blaming all its problems on capitalism or the free market, it is necessary to understand deeper aspects.
Culture. Korea was a poor and agricultural country after the war, the few companies that existed in the country became friends with the State in order to receive privileges and advantages in the market. The Korean culture is not to be an entrepreneur or to create companies, it is to work for those big companies that monopolize the market, to have a good position in them. It's a somewhat rigid culture in terms of a vertical structure. And everything in Korea has moved around this, from education to the economy. There is a "free economy" where big companies allied to the state dominate and the smaller ones compete without having those privileges. Working for these big companies is almost like being a state official.
There are many things here that do not go hand in hand with capitalism, for example, the state monopoly of companies that have privileges. And in recent years, economic measures have been implemented in Korea that move even further away from capitalism. All of this creates problems that affect ordinary citizens, and South Korea must solve them to avoid a major crisis in the future. If this series criticizes "capitalism" (which is not capitalism), it refers to this model of corporate state mercantilism that exists to a greater or lesser extent in many countries around the world, but not to free market capitalism, which is the model that has brought the greatest prosperity in the world.
The "capitalism" of South Korea is not the same as the capitalism of Singapore, Taiwan, Australia or Sweden, for example. It is important to know a little more so as not to fall into biases.
El juego obedece a una estructura muy rígida de jugadores, soldados y líderes, además de personas muy poderosas que obtienen favores de los líderes. Todo se basa en la coacción de los jugadores, los líderes tienen el monopolio de la violencia y no se les puede contradecir. Bajo estas condiciones de coacción y sometimiento, surgen los aspectos más oscuros del ser humano. Esto no ocurriría teniendo mayores libertades y reglas que busquen preservar el orden. En el mundo real, afuera del juego, la serie refleja de cierta forma la realidad del país en cuestión: Corea del Sur. Es verdad, no es un país socialista, pero antes de achacar todos sus males al capitalismo o libre mercado hay que entender aspectos más profundos.
La cultura. Corea era un país pobre y agrícola luego de la Guerra, las pocas empresas que habían con el tiempo se amigaron con el Estado para recibir privilegios y ventajas en el mercado. La cultura del coreano no es ser emprendedor o crear empresas, es trabajar para esas grandes empresas que monopolizan el mercado, tener un buen puesto en ellas. Es una cultura algo rígida en cuanto a una estructura vertical. Y todo en corea se ha movido en torno a esto, desde la educación hasta la economía. Existe una "economía libre" en donde grandes empresas aliadas al Estado dominan y las más pequeñas compiten sin tener esos privilegios. Trabajar para estas empresas grandes es casi como ser un funcionario del Estado.
Hay muchas cosas acá que no van de la mano con el capitalismo, por ejemplo. el monopolio estatal de empresas que tienen privilegios. Y en los últimos años se han aplicado en Corea medidas económicas que se alejan aún más del capitalismo. Todo esto genera problemas que afectan a los ciudadanos de a pie y Corea del Sur debe resolverlo para evitar una crisis mayor en el futuro. Si esta serie hace crítica al "capitalismo" (que no es capitalismo), se refiere a este modelo de mercantilismo estatal corporativo que existe en menor o mayor medida en muchos países del mundo, pero no al capitalismo de libre mercado, el cual es el modelo que mayor prosperidad ha traído.
El "capitalismo" de Corea del Sur no es igual al capitalismo de Singapur, Taiwán, Australia o Suecia, por ejemplo. Es importante saber un poco más para no caer en sesgos.
