Now I get why this movie would be the most known way to meet this character: With a one and a half hour of runtime with awesome 80s hand-drawn animation, you get everything that the anime episodes I had discussed previously transmits to you in a single package.
The calculated clockwork of setting up his weaponry, the unbelievable precision of his bullets, his emotionless nerves of steel, and all of it packaged with the ever attractive 80s animation style...if there's a single piece of media to introduce you to the menace of a man himself, it has to be this one.
For a breath of fresh air, I won't try to summarize the movie itself, but rather mention the few things that stood out to me and why it is pretty cool for an action flick with style, since not only the character is still very much like you would know him from the 2008 anime, but also the plot isn't much of a highlight as it is a vehicle to show the things you'll see in action.
A stronger tale for a longer take
As the first fully animated adaptation of the franchise after two live action movies and the long-lost 1971 anime that resembled motion manga rather than a full animation, the director clearly knew that they needed something more epic for Golgo's biggest adventure yet.
For one, there's the second kill of the movie with Golgo taking out the son of the billionaire Leonard Dawson leading to the rest of the plot, as said man is who actually starts the manhunt for Golgo with mercenaries and police for his revenge, making for the longest streak of people behind his head in one go.
What makes The Professional stand out from the rest of Golgo 13 media and is even often commented in videos related to it, is how Golgo is actually pushed to the edge of death by most of the threats that show up here and reacts in pain from the wounds he gets, such as this shot from when he was fighting against three mercenaries in the first half of the movie, which he wasn't able to one shot with his gun.
Unlike his usual stories where he can deal with an equal sniper with wits or outsmart groups of men, here not only he's barraged with gunmen and police cars, but also goes solo against THREE freaks of nature with far more durability than the average victim, one of which actually disposed of the three first mercenaries Golgo fought and had to escape from. Golgo is basically fighting vintage anime villains instead of ordinary yet skilled men, like Big Snake initially being shown to have some sort of invisible technique a la Hokuto no Ken, and is crazy to see am actual back and forth from him against these deadly mercenaries.
! [Hidden Spoiler Text] And by the way, that technique is actually these thin wires that explain how he even does that in this world...but it doesn't change that he forces Golgo to fight with fists when he takes away BOTH of his guns through said wires.
The highs and lows of 80s animation
On one hand, the movie has some pristine art to go with it with the backgrounds, character designs being solid (Golgo in particular has quite the drip in this movie), and those occasional super stylized stills conveying from an awesome car jump, an exchange of paths between Duke and another threat, or even an emotional close-up to someone; there are a handful that are related to the plot so I'll leave it at that.
There are a few trippy scenes, but overall it does hit as well as an 80s OVA can, which is a lot when it looks so distinct compared to anime released in the next decades.
On the other hand, this movie is the first animated movie to implement CGI animation, which is incredible for 1983 when the Famicom a.k.a Nintendo Entertainment System was just being released- that alone should tell you how technology wasn't that advanced yet to know how ahead of the curve the idea was.
Wile it is applied to mesh well with the stop motion in the cool opening, you can tell that fact about being the first is true when you see the helicopter scenes.
That's probably the only thing that aged visually from the movie for obvious reasons, which makes for an interesting juxtaposition of how the old cel animation that powers everything else still holds up today.
I got nothing for this section title
Well, I do have to mention it since it is something that usually doesn't go unnoticed with reviews, but as with the manga being so old and this being based off it, there might be a few things that can feel outdated regarding the trope of basic every female character wanting some Duke Togo in bed, except for the widow of Dawson's son which...ends with something even worse.

That's the main thing noticed by reviewers, and it does make sense that it is outdated in that regard because it IS quite old, but if you can put your thoughts away from that, and don't mind the plot not being that deep in general, then there shouldn't be much else to complain.

Aside from how getting to see Golgo take more hits than usual is already a surprise in itself, there's an interesting twist that I won't spoil that comes from the end and the mystery behind who actually had sent Golgo to kill Dawson's son. And beyond that along with the slightly unclear ending...
! [Hidden Spoiler Text] Specifically, Laura, the widow of Dawson's son Robert, finding Golgo and pulling out a gun on his back. We see the gun fire from her hands, but we then see Golgo walk away as credits roll in...
...So while it is unclear what exactly happened, it can be assumed that Golgo either dodged or she somehow missed- while Golgo shot back as he does to anyone that has tried to shoot him. And without anything else to do about it, he leaeves the scene.
If you remember when I talked about the fourth episode of the anime, you might notice that the ending is very similar to the one in that episode- except the anime definitely made it clear that Golgo shot back and didn't miss.
There isn't much else to describe textually about the plot since honestly it might work better to just watch and see it unfold in action, as even if there might be a few slow moments, when Golgo's on the job or on the run, you know you'll watch something crazy about to go down, be it impossible sniping or impossible escapes, such as sniping someone with an assault rifle on a bulletproof glass building through several windows on a building in the way, escaping in a turbocharged car, or fighting back his strongest opponents yet if not ever with his fists if he can't reach the gun.
And that's why I could say this movie encapsulates what the manga or anime adptation show you: From Golgo taking an impossible distance shot into a bulletproof glas, to getting to see his cunning strategy and...ease of getting around without even changing his expression (I still find that funny), and the precision he shows with most of the one-bullet, one-kill shots he takes. Not to mention that it does add some action with Golgo having more dangerous enemies and having him do not just a whole escape on a car, but also driving in a building with a bike that left this one shot, and see him through legitimate struggles for his life instead of his usually unbreakable demeanor.
Overall though, it is an action movie that delivers on getting to see a consummate professional of his killing job do what he does best, and get away from the absolute worst, with a very distinct look thanks to the time it was made at (which is more impressive when you consider that when this was made, the manga was 15 years old at that point), and...
One more thing
The soundtrack.
Listen to it. At the very minimum, treat yourself to some PRAAAYYYY FOR YOUUUUUU PRAY FOR YOU from the opening. The way the movie looked from screenshots and listening to this song is what had me looking forward these past few days to finally give it a watch.

Una historia más fuerte para una toma más larga
Al tratarse de la primera adaptación totalmente animada de la franquicia, tras dos películas de acción real y el desaparecido anime de 1971 que se parecía más a un manga en movimiento que a una animación completa, el director sabía claramente que necesitaban algo más épico para la mayor aventura de Golgo hasta la fecha.
Para empezar, está la segunda muerte de la película, en la que Golgo se carga al hijo del multimillonario Leonard Dawson, lo que da pie al resto de la trama, ya que dicho hombre es quien realmente inicia la persecución de Golgo con mercenarios y policías por su venganza, lo que hace que haya la mayor cantidad de gente detrás de su cabeza de una sola vez.

Por un lado, la película tiene un arte prístino que la acompaña con los fondos, diseños de personajes que son sólidos (Golgo en particular tiene bastante goteo en esta película), y esos ocasionales fotogramas súper estilizados que transmiten desde un impresionante salto en coche, un intercambio de caminos entre Duke y otra amenaza, o incluso un emotivo primer plano de alguien; hay un puñado que están relacionados con la trama así que lo dejaré ahí.
Hay algunas escenas triposas, pero en general pega todo lo bien que puede pegar un OVA de los 80, que es mucho cuando se ve tan distinto comparado con animes lanzados en las décadas siguientes.
