This movie was...interesting. The creativity it has in playing with expectations have merit in how things are never as clear cut as they seem, mainly comparing what we see and assume it is to what appears to be happening....
I think to start with something that doesn't involve spoilers, for what you will have intuited is a horror movie with these four raiding a shed with guns by the poster, the performance the actors give about these individuals who are not at all at all well but at the same time have some humanity and compassion (why is more complicated, but they bring both a human side to these characters and clear dissonance with what you see).
The presence of Dave Bautista, who some will recognize from being Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies has been quite noted both by critics and people around the world as well as my brother, a friend and I when we saw the movie last night, as the size and shape he has as well as his performance add quite a bit to the pressure of the situation in the plot.
This is especially noticeable with the beginning of the movie, with his character Leonard, dressed in a white flannel and glasses as you would imagine a school teacher but with lots of tattoos on his arms meeting little Wen who lives with two parents in the cabin....
...And what happens next I'd say that as with other horror movies, it's best to watch it on your own before reading on, but let's just say that the tension that comes from when this guy with a slightly offbeat vibe comes knocking on the door with three other people with guns and what happens from there is going to hook you for the rest of the movie with the time you'll have to digest it all.
Mind you, the film knows how to use its resources to make everything feel tense, considering how almost everything takes place in this cabin in the remote woods with the phone line cut, and how the plot unfolds as things start to quickly take a turn for the worse.
But hey, if you have no problem with reading some summary about the movie before watching it (or if you've already seen it) because the commentary I have in mind will require it, go ahead.
A mysterious lack of sanity
Perhaps not surprisingly, but these people, who seem to have a strange interest in going in and talking to Andrew and Eric inside the cabin while holding guns for something about saving the world, end up breaking in while they still being scared grab anything to fight back against them.
But as you might have expected, they couldn't get out of what was coming at them despite fighting back.
When they are tied up and forbidden to leave the cabin, we have the message coming from these four individuals: In short, an apocalypse will happen that can only be prevented if one of the three in the small family sacrifices one of them. And the mysterious four apparently can't "decide for them"...which leaves the question of what else they would need to do with the giant axes they have with the bound pair of men.
The dynamic feels creepy as these four guys are very convinced of the words about the plagues that will come upon the world if they don't make the sacrifice, visibly frightened at the mere idea, while Eric seems to be struggling between believing or not believing after the concussion he received by one of them, and on the other hand Andrew sees is some crazy cultists who have something against them.
And it all gets even creepier when one day's time is up and one of them puts a bag over his head for the rest of them to murder him.
"A part of humanity has been judged."
Playing with feelings
This comes mainly from how, while all this is going on, the movie gives you brief flashbacks of Andrew and Eric's story, how they decided to go ahead with their relationship, adopt Wen as a baby, sing together on the way to live at the cabin and enjoy a swim in a lake.
I know it seems like a somewhat trite device to mention that you see these people's pasts while they're in their current precarious situation, but between the time they have to start everything and the length the movie needs, as well as the way they do it, it looks as if their lives are flashing before their eyes as they watch this guy die by axes to the head, just as we as the audience see it metaphorically and literally.
On the other hand, these people seem to be truly grieving for "the job they have on their hands" after the first death, just as we see one of them who is a nurse attending to Eric trying to convince him of what is going on, and another who works in a restaurant giving Wen breakfast, and as after that first death, they turn on the TV to show the aftermath: A giant tsunami sweeping through cities.
However, Eric and Andrew cling to their sanities and do nothing, resulting in the sacrifice of the cook in front of them. Everyone is upset about what is happening, but with different results, and the movie with the angles it has makes quite a bit of emphasis on this even though it doesn't directly show these grotesque deaths on camera.
The following is spoilers for half of the movie. I reiterate that if you haven't seen it yet but want to enjoy it, stop here and watch it.
The curtain rises
By this point, Andrew has a memory of seeing the first guy who died earlier, specifically as "the guy from the bar", who we later see in a flashback had attacked Andrew with a bottle while hanging out with Eric, and he starts to see what's really going on:
These four people had apparently met on an internet forum, with the visions they had "seen", and he intuits that having a drunk who had already attacked Andrew years before, a highly believing nurse (even though before this he had told Eric that before he didn't believe much in the church), an easily manipulated young woman, and the giant Leonard who seemed to be the delusional cultist behind bringing the rest of them in. He noticed that they were always watching the time to be ready to turn on the TV and show another catastrophe, this time with a deadly virus that appeared and is highly contagious with children, something they must have known from being pre-recorded.
At the same time, Eric with the help of Wen with a knife he took hidden from his breakfast, and Andrew who managed to untie himself from the chair, struggle to escape: Eric fighting with Leonard still with his injured leg, while Andrew goes out the door, gets to the van and narrowly managed to take the gun in the trunk to make the nurse drive away. However, Leonard manages to incapacitate Eric, and Andrew ends up killing the nurse who ran screaming into the back of the house with one shot.
And yes, Leonard takes it upon himself to put her down as well with bag and axe to the face despite already being dead with the bullet in her heart. At this point, he turns on the TV again to show airplanes falling from the sky causing many deaths, to which Eric acknowledges something they said earlier that "the sky would fall" among other things.
At this point Eric remains lucid, but convinced that what is happening is real, and they will have to make a decision. Andrew on the other hand prefers not to believe the madman who came into his house and with his gun, takes him to lock himself in the bathroom...only for him to break the bathroom window....
! [Spoiler] ...And take the gun from him when Andrew checks the bathroom, only he didn't go out the window, but hid behind the curtains, a moment that is shown to be quite tense as Andrew aims and shoots to see if no one was there before he catches him.

The following is spoilers for the final act of the movie. I think it goes without saying more of what this means.
Wait a minute...what?
At this point, having heard the stories of these individuals, even Leonard who shows and tells that he is actually a sports teacher with a picture of his students in hand, he reiterates that they only have minutes left before it is too late to save the world with his decision and cuts his throat, leaving only Andrew, Eric, Wen...and the last omen of his warnings from earlier: Lightning and fire will fall from the sky, and it will be filled with darkness..
In that moment, with what they saw and even with a moment of Andrew realizing what they represented: The Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
And not simply in a flat way: The aggressive one was Malice, the cook was Food, the nurse was Healing, and Leonard's big guy was Guide...which are actually inverted parallels of the ones we already know: War, Famine, Death and Conquest. Even Redmond who is depicted as "malice" with his attitude can be said to be an opposite of war because he is the first one willing to die sacrificed rather than decide to let others die.
(By the way, credits to this article which was the one that clarified for me the meaning of why they are not called exactly like the horsemen we know and I found it quite interesting; what I explained is a short summary of that).
At that point it was already a decision they had to make: Someone had to die, or the world had to suffer.

[The final moment] Wen is sent to wait in her tree house while Eric and Andrew struggle with words of what they should do: Andrew even though he now does believe what is happening wants to cling to it not being true, or even plead for Eric to be the one to kill him, while Eric had long been pleading with him that he wanted to sacrifice himself for the future he had seen in little visions that happened in his head as the sacrifices and accidents happened on TV, something we even see with an adult Wen and an older Andrew in a successful life.
At the end Andrew, crying in pain, sacrifices Eric with his gun and goes to hug his daughter who asks him if Eric saved the world (seeing that he didn't go into the treehouse with him), and they go to get out of there with the van that the strangers arrived in who in the end were not crazy, but at the same time it's more creepy that we see the personal belongings of each of them like Leonard's diploma and a picture of the waitress with her son, implying that they were indeed normal people who ended up with the worst role, while they start the car and the song they heard before everything with Eric plays when they were going to the cabin.
The movie ends with them going to a restaurant and seeing that the apocalyptic events came with people being rescued from what happened with the tsunamis, the hospital having its first day with no recorded deaths, and plane takeoffs with no accidents, implying that at the end of the day, Eric's sacrifice **was not in vain at all.
Conclusion.
The fact that the movie puts so much tension into what happens, only for when you're starting to rationalize it all as cultist madness, it ended up being a true foreshadowing that sent innocent people to do what they did, and lead this loving family to sacrifice a very loved one to prevent the world from truly ending from the apocalyptic plagues they were warned about...that was really something.
And more to be a plot twist for what much of the movie, but with nothing really explicit, implied was something about delusional cultists wanting to do some macabre ritual with an innocent family in a cabin. Even I thought it was going to be nothing more than a prelude to a story about more of what these cultists do after something cruel and brief happened to them.
For the icing on the cake, from what I read here, it looks like the ending of the movie is quite different from how the book that was adapted here ends...and that's all I'm going to say.
But well, this is the first movie review I've done in a while here; a month ago I was planning to write something about all the Saw movies and the first Resident Evil movie since I've seen them in the last month, but I could write about this one right now since I have it fresh from last night.

La presencia de Dave Bautista, quien algunos reconocerán por ser Drax en las películas de Guardianes de la Galaxia ha sido bastante notada tanto por críticos y personas alrededor del mundo así como mi hermano, un amigo y yo cuando vimos la película anoche, ya que el tamaño y forma que tiene así como su actuación añaden bastante a la presión de la situación en la trama.
Esto se nota especialmente con el inicio de la película, con su personaje Leonard, vestido de una franela blanca y lentes como imaginarías a un profesor de la escuela pero con muchos tatuajes en sus brazos encontrarse con la pequeña Wen que vive con dos padres en la cabaña...

Eso si, la película sabe aprovechar sus recursos para hacer que todo se sienta tenso, considerando que casi todo toma lugar en esta cabaña en el bosque remoto con la línea telefónica cortada, y como se desarrolla la trama cuando las cosas empiezan a empeorar rápidamente.
Pero bueno, si no tienes problema con leer algo de resumen sobre la película antes de verla (o si ya la viste) debido a que el comentario que tengo en mente requerirá de ello, siga adelante.
Una falta de sanidad misteriosa
Quizás no sea sorpresa, pero estas personas, las cuales parecen tener un interés extraño en entrar y hablar con Andrew y Eric dentro de la cabaña mientras sujetan las armas para algo sobre salvar el mundo, terminan entrando a la fuerza mientras que ellos aún estando asustados agarran cualquier cosa para pelear en contra ellos.
Pero como se habrán esperado, no pudieron salirse de lo que les venía a pesar de luchar.
Cuando están amarrados y prohibidos de salir de la cabaña, tenemos el mensaje que viene de estos cuatro individuos: En pocas palabras, un apocalipsis pasará que solo puede ser prevenido si alguno de los tres en la pequeña familiar sacrifica a uno de ellos. Se que parece un recurso algo trillado de mencionar que veas el pasado de estas personas mientras que están en la situación precaria actual, pero entre el tiempo que tienen para iniciar todo y la duración que necesita la película, así como la forma en la que lo hacen, se ve como si sus vidas estuvieran pasando ante sus ojos mientras ven a este sujeto morir por hachas en la cabeza, así como nosotros como público lo vemos metafórica y literalmente.
Por otra parte, estas personas parecen estar verdaderamente afligidas por "el trabajo que tienen en sus manos" después de la primera muerte, así como vemos a una de ellas que es enfermera atendiendo a Eric intentando convencerlo de lo que pasa, y otra que trabaja en un restaurante dándole un desayuno a Wen, y como después de aquella primera muerte, ponen la televisión para mostrar las consecuencias: Un tsunami gigante arrasando ciudades.

A este punto, habiendo escuchado las historias de estos individuos, hasta de Leonard que muestra y cuenta que en realidad es un profesor de deporte con una foto de sus estudiantes en mano, reitera que solo les quedan minutos antes de que sea demasiado tarde de salvar el mundo con su decisión y se corta la garganta, dejando solo a Andrew, Eric, Wen...y el último augurio de sus advertencias de hace rato: Rayos y fuego caerán del cielo, y se llenará de tinieblas.
En ese momento, con lo que veían y hasta con un momento de Andrew que se da cuenta lo que representaban: Los Jinetes del Apocalipsis.

Al final Andrew, llorando de dolor, sacrifica a Eric con su arma y va a abrazar a su hija que le pregunta si Eric salvó el mundo (al ver que no entró a la casa de árbol con el), y van a salir de ahí con la camioneta en la que llegaron los extraños que al final no estaban locos, pero al mismo tiempo es más tétrico que vemos las pertenencias personales de cada uno de ellos como el diploma de Leonard y un cuadro de la mesera con su hijo, dando a entender que efectivamente eran personas normales que terminaron con el peor papel, mientras que encienden el auto y suena la canción que escucharon antes de todo con Eric cuando iban a la cabaña.

Conclusión
El hecho de que la película ponga tanta tensión en lo que sucede, solo para que cuando estás empezando a racionalizar todo como una locura cultista, terminó siendo un presagio verdadero que envió a personas inocentes a hacer lo que hicieron, y a llevar a esta familia amorosa a sacrificar a un ser muy querido para evitar que el mundo en verdad se acabara de las plagas apocalípticas de las que fueron advertidos...eso fue realmente algo.
Y más para ser un giro de trama para lo que gran parte de la película, pero con nada verdaderamente explícito, implicaba que era algo sobre cultistas delusionados queriendo hacer algún ritual macabro con una familia inocente en una cabaña. Hasta yo pensaba que iba a ser nada más que un preludio a una historia sobre más de lo que hacen estos cultistas después de que le sucediera algo cruel y breve a ellos.
Para la guinda del pastel, de lo que leí aquí, parece que el final de la película es bastante diferente de como termina el libro que se adaptó aquí...y solo eso voy a decir.
Pero bueno, esta es la primera reseña que hago en un buen tiempo de una película aquí; hace un mes tenía planeado de escribir algo sobre todas las películas de Saw y la primera de Resident Evil ya que me las había visto el último mes, pero de esta pude escribir ahora mismo ya que la tengo fresca de anoche.
