Some people have probably never heard of this movie, but if you are from Latin America, then you very likely have heard of Shaolin Soccer, a Hong Kong movie that takes the concept of soccer and infuses it with Shaolin Kung Fu...in the most absurdly over the top way possible.
Even as a movie that clearly has a lot of comedy intended and many moments, including the ridiculous feats shown on-screen, the way this is wrapped under a story with basic coherence and at least a certain level of backstory for each of the main characters to get motivated into finally taking the challenge of playing soccer with their shaolin skills was a neat surprise- a proper plot that leads into the many crazy moments of the movie.
Living with the regret of your past's shadow
For a comedy movie, there's a particularly interesting if not eerily relatable topic that kicks off the plot of these characters: Having to deal with a sucky present that contrasts with your golden years, be it five or tweanty years later.
On one hand, we have the disheveled Fung which had got tricked into missing a goal in a match for money by his teammate Hung, which resulted in being beaten over by an angry crowd that broke his "Golden Leg" and now lives in the shadow of his currently succesful "old friend" that kicked him out because he wanted to be a coach for his own team.
On the other hand, we have the protagonist Sing and his other brothers, all which were trained as shaolin monks, live unfulfilling lives while Sing, the only one that's still visibly keeping his training in check and trying to share the uses of Shaolin Kung-Fu, is also living in poor conditions while is dismissed as a crazy hobo when he tries to approach others- including being initially dismissed by Fung.
However, when at one point in the movie, Fung gets to see first-hand the prowess of Sing's skills, which conveniently demonstrated when fighting back by kicking someone's soccer ball with absurd strength, he is convinced that he could use his skills for his own winner soccer team- and while Sing's brothers are initially too hestitant, depressed or inconfident to take his offer seriously at first, they all eventually reminsce of their shaolin days and thinking about an opportunity to turn things around...
This crucial moment is shown when the last brother Sing attempted to convince, a busy businessman, says that the probabilities of winning that big championship they wanted to go at were the same as a coin landing straight into a line...and soon after they leave, we see a coin he flipped earlier having landed straight into a line- then we see the brothers reminsce on a photo of their training days until they finally reunite with Sing.
A pretty emotional start and hook that would lead into the comedy of their ups and downs in their training journey...
Learning to master your strengths again
The team is initially a chaos at playing soccer because they don't have any basic soccer notions, first shown with Sing's insane leg strength actually sending the soccer ball flying into the sky, but Fung's there to help them use their strengths and conquer their weaknesses, such as Sing having to learn to control his kicks to train properly with the others, and a comedy-horror scene where the "light weight vest", which is now obese after a downfall from his prime, is trying to charge at Sing because he broke one of his eggs and wants to eat it- only for him to aim at another guy's mouth because Sing threw an egg at it.
There's an element of comedy between the path from having to get together into their first proper match with how they fumble, specially when their first match is against a team infamous for foul play, as shown when one of them accidentally has a wrench fall off his short, and then a literal beatdown ensues when they try to play it straight. It is hilarious the ways they flop and yet make you feel the despair of being at an impossible uphill fight...until they lock in.
As with how that initial failing training montage start showing proper progress, after that awful beating they were receiving that even prompted the often smoking Iron Head to humilliate himself by wearing one of the other player's underwear in his head as an attempt to surrender...
...We suddenly see them somehow activate their hidden potential from those shaolin training years, depicted with everyone being frozen while these previously bumbling players were now synchronized with martial art poses, including the goalie holding himself from the goalpost with ONE ARM FROM THE SIDE.
That's where the team goes from "silly idiots" to "silly but AWESOME" as they use their namesake skills to fight back their enemies, such as...
- Iron Head using headbutts
- Iron Shirt being able to absord attacks with his chest and even hold the ball until he can expulse it with strength like a cannon
- The obese Light Weight Vest leaping mid air as if he were flying to kick the ball
- Hooking Leg basically going Tekken's Eddy Gordo with acrobatic leg sweeps and movements similar to Capoeira (Wikipedia describes his moves as ground tumble boxing...but I was definitely only thinking about Eddy Gordo's moves when he was doing some trickery with the ball)
- Lightning Hand being able to easily do his goalkeeper duty with his agility while being accentuated by a Bruce Lee likeness (which is later furthened when he wears a yellow and black tracksuit)
- And Sing kicking the ball so strong that, even though he hit it on the goalpost and is seen bothered by it, the ball DENTED and got stuck inside the goalpost, making the other team flee and then beg to be part of their team.
With the ridiculous feats made possible by their skills shown in a match that resulted in a decisive victory, we finally are treated to a montage of them crushing the tournament, after Hung accepted their entrance into the open tournament with laughs and overconfidence (and then gets a call to know about their absurd results), with the first match having two hilarious immediate goals from Sing's kick-off, followed by a plea from the other team to let them play and being styled on again, and then the last team before the finals being a set of woman players with fake moustaches and beards initially being shown to have similar special skills to the main team...only for them to be shut down by not Bruce Lee doing his thing and then hit a goal from the other side of the field with his throw.
Yeah, he basically threw the ball to the other goal with his hands.
But then we would see the final challenge awaiting for them, the point where we see everything come to a critical point.
Heading into spoiler territory
While at this point there's a fair amount of comedy from the ridiculous feats and touching moments of the story itself as the movie goes on, including this little bond Sing forms with a shy girl with acne cooking sweet buns at the beginning (which results in a sudden dance number with random people out of nowhere- its funnier when you see it happen), what comes next is something that is related to the end of the movie...so if you are interested in this movie so far and want to watch the insanity with your own eyes rather than on text, as well as see how everything plays out at the end, then go check it out and then come back.

So...the finals roll out, and we had seen before that the UNDERWATER TRAINING Hung's team was enduring, but when the match happens, we see all of the monks being outmatched in skill, not only with their resistance against their skills but also somehow playing better with them against the main team, including Sing being unable to score a single goal against their threatening goalie that even does THIS-
...and having the Bruce Lee goalie sacrifice himself when stopping all of the entire team's supercharged kicks from entering the goal, burning his hands and having to get carried out.
Though he decides to go with more style than just an heroic sacrifice by putting on sunglasses while being taken out.
This sacrifice is repeated by Iron Shirt, who also tanks all of their powerful shots as the replacement goalkeeper also at the cost of his burned body, and at that point between his loss and two random players that had joined after that first training session running away, they were left with no extra players to spare and were going to lose by default...
And then the Chekhov Gun activated: You see, that girl I had mentioned before that bonded with Sing, Mui, had caught his interest because she used Tai Chi to mold the buns to make them sweet, and he praised her skill with that, which started a neat relationship until Sing had friendzoned her when she confessed, leaving him alone with a ticket to the finals when he didn't find her where she used to work...
...But she returned in those finals to save them at the last second- completely shaved to fit the shaolin motif because he told her to "be herself" once and became the new goalkeeper.
While she initially was seen bumbling with bumping her head with the goalpost, and the wrong one for that matter, she soon shows her true mettle when she succesfully blocks Team Evil's ultimate shot (yes, they were called Team Evil, even in the flashback), which was introduced like this:
Thanks to her tai chi mastery, redirecting it with the wind instead of trying to take it with the bare hands, and spins it so much that it causes a whirlwind when she passes the ball to Sing.
This her gentle but powerful pass with the wind is taken by Sing's steel leg kick and turns into a shot with the strength of a hurricane, as compared to Team Evil's shots which were burning and with a dragon flame, Sing's shot was literally tearing the grass apart in the middle of the field, sent away the rest of the team, and left the goalie butt naked WHILE THE BALL LITERALLY SENT HIM AND THE ENTIRE GOAL FLYING AWAY.
If that isn't a crushing victory, then I don't know what is. I actually expected the "so powerful your clothes get shredded" gag to be used for Iron Shirt when it was his turn to take the shots, but that it was reserved for this epic moment made it so much better, to the point that I didn't actually point that thought out or laughed aloud when it happened because of how stunned I was with the destructive power of that goal.
And with that, Hung was defeated and even humilliated himself as he stumbled down the stairs nearby, Fung redeemed himself after 20 years with the victory of his own soccer team, the shaolin monks had finally achieved glory once again after their master had passed away (and got some real money from winning the championship), and after initially not having fully reciprocated feelings, Sing and Mui were shown to have married.
The ending is a callback to the beginning with how we see Sing go around that street with a woman tripping on a banana peel...only for her to land back on her feet without losing her style, a woman pushing her car into a tight parking zone with a shaolin move (which even as an example we had seen before, still had my brother laughing so much while saying "THAT WAS SO UNNECESSARY") and a guy that had been fired before for being slow to cut the grass now using shaolin moves to do so at a fast speed, as we then see upwards the news of Sing and Mui's victory causing a mania of shaolin kung-fu all over the world while we see in the distance a bunch of suited men training...and then when a bus comes by, they all do insane flips to get on top of it.
All of this while Bus Stop's Kung Fu Fighting is playing.
Let me tell you, if you had watched the movie, then you know how insane was watching all of that, and yet with how the tone of the movie was set for both comedy and the quest for redemption, it paid off well. And if you didn't...then let me tell you that it still is worth watching just to see what words absolutely cannot do justice to.
Conclusion
This movie is a big example of how even if the premise is ridiculous and the execution even more so, not only that itself is what led to this movie made with so much earnest fun in mind: Mixing the comedy and ridiculousness with a story that actually makes you emphatize with the characters and root for their victory while having those crazy effects in 2001 is something that sounds quite impressive for the time...and also something that some might consider that was only possible as a product of its time.
Many have compared it to the kind of feats you see in anime, and apparently it was even inspired by the Captain Tsubasa anime/manga, which makes sense when everything that you see are stuff that you could also see happening in one (I even said that this was kinda like if Baki was about soccer)...which makes them even crazier as a live action movie, but I personally think these rule-less matches and absurd powerful shots bring me the same kind of fun as the Super Mario Strikers games- and those are the only soccer games I can say I would absolutely be ready to play with someone anytime.
And I think that the vibes the movie gives from the budget and location they had to work are what give it that extra fun touch. Even if it you might not call this the pinnacle of cinema in story or special effects, it is undeniably a very entertaining movie between all the qualities it somehow manages to have despite everything, being more memorable than anything.
Now I understand why my brother and others referenced this movie many times before and even called it a classic- Even if it is maybe not as known as other movies with much more influence or recently released, it is a classic be it for the comedy moments, for the emotions despite those, or for the absurdity of the premise that was definitely taking the idea of superpowers in soccer way before Mario Strikers or anime like Blue Lock while making it work in live action while benefitting from how ridiculous that looks in it.
Maybe sooner or later I'll actually check out a Christmas-related movie, but I had ended up watching this for the first time as I had told my brother about checking the second Resident Evil movie a while after we watched the first one...and since they didn't have it available here on Netflix for some reason, he thought on the genius idea of watching this instead. And I'm so glad he did.
