Film franchises usually manage to garner a decent fan base that keeps them alive. This is especially true of horror franchises, which, despite years passing from one instalment to the next, always have their fans faithfully waiting for the latest film in their favourite franchise. Classics such as Scream, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, and even Chucky have delighted their fans with continuations over the years. One of the franchises that never seems to rest until absolutely every idea and possible plot line has been exhausted is Saw.

Nineteen years after surprising us with the first instalment, the "adventures" of John Kramer seem to be far from over, as last September saw the release of Saw X, the tenth film in the franchise. Although I was very hesitant to see it or not, after several recommendations and seeing that once again Kramer would be in charge of the game and retake the lead role, I didn't hesitate to put it on the billboard for the October film marathon. And while it wasn't one of the best instalments, it had points that I enjoyed and kept me entertained until the end.
This time, we have a Kramer almost consumed by cancer, desperate to find a light that will give him hope of enjoying a few more years. After being notified that he only has a few months to live, John, meets an old friend he met at a cancer support group. The man, who was also terminally ill, makes a miraculous recovery and reveals to Kramer that he underwent an experimental treatment that proved miraculous and recommends he try it too. With little to lose, John travels to Mexico to meet a Norwegian doctor who promises to save his life.
There's not too much to say about the plot, those familiar with the franchise already know that Jigsaw usually makes an appearance to teach a lesson to someone who is wasting their life or gambling with the lives of others, especially John himself. With this in mind, it is easy to guess the outcome of the treatment he underwent, and even anticipate who will be the victims of Jigsaw's traps. However, ten films later, what we fans want is to see novel and bloody traps, the director knows this and delivers, not the best, but quite striking and brutal traps.
Actor Tobin Bell does his usual thing in playing the notorious assassin, though this time with two brief shades, that of a Kramer practically defeated and on the verge of writing his will and another with hope for a brighter tomorrow and a life ahead of him. He may not be the most outstanding actor, however, I enjoyed seeing a different side to the character in this film. Something I also enjoyed was the return of one of Jigsaw's apprentices, this helped add unexpected little details to the plot that served to develop the final twist in the story, so characteristic of the franchise.
As I mentioned, the best thing about the Saw movies, or at least what we all expect from them, are the traps. They are the central focus of the film and the way Jigsaw teaches his victims the value of life. In this instalment I felt the traps were especially difficult, perhaps I'm forgetting others, due to the time that has passed since I saw the previous films, however, many of the ones in this instalment seemed set up to fail and practically impossible to accomplish. I feel that they went more to the "punishment" side, than the traditional side of teaching the victims to value life and decide if they are willing to do what it takes to live.
In fact, I think there were several inconsistencies in the traps, especially one, where it was not clear to me how it could be possible for the victim to escape from it. But, if we leave aside the technical details (how it was possible for John to build all that, how long it took him to do it, how he could do it when he was practically evicted, etc., etc.), the traps were really entertaining and brutal, giving us the gore that has characterised Saw almost since its beginnings. In every film I have my favourite, and in this one it was one involving a radiation machine, maybe it wasn't as gory as the others, but it was incredibly vicious, on par with the disappointment of John.
Outside the inconsistencies of the traps, the next thing I disliked were the "villains" (from Kramer's point of view), i.e. the victims of Jigsaw's traps. There was no exploration into the past of almost any of them, plus there was one character who seemed like the typical boring "cliché" villain. Once the reality of the character was revealed, the character lost depth, she became mired in just being evil, for the sake of being evil, with no nuance and one-note. In the end, I didn't want her to die to teach her a lesson, but to stop seeing her bullshit and how lousy her character was.
Despite still having the earlier films as my favourite of the latest in the franchise, I feel that this one picked up on a lot of things I liked about the earlier ones. Which made me want to take another look at them to remember the old days, and that made me rank it above the last three, or even four, which I thought were a bit weak. I recommend it if you're a fan of the franchise, it didn't disappoint me as much as the one before it, and if you like gore, you can't miss it, the whole franchise is already a classic of the genre.
Now we just have to see what they have in store for us for next year, which will be the 20th anniversary of the first Saw instalment, let's hope it's something that closes the saga definitively and that it does it in a spectacular way.

Se las recomiendo si son fanáticos de la franquicia, no me decepcionó tanto como la anterior a esta, y si les gusta el gore, no se la pueden perder, toda la franquicia ya es un clásico del género.
Ahora solamente nos falta ver qué nos tienen preparado para el próximo año en el cual se cumplen 20 años de la primera entrega de Saw, esperemos que se trate algo que cierre definitivamente la saga y que lo haga de manera espectacular.
