Locked in is a dramatic thriller released last November on Netflix and tells the story of Lina, a young woman who lives to care for her ailing husband, under the strict supervision of her mother-in-law, a famous Hollywood diva. With a seemingly complex plot, the story is revealed to us through flashbacks. These tell us about Lina's life inside the large mansion where she has lived practically all her life under the tutelage and supervision of Katherine, a famous movie star, who took care of her after her mother, an old friend, passed away when she was young.
Within that enormous estate, Lina finds in Jamie, Katherine's stepson, a companion and eventually a husband, however, years of illness turned a sweet child into a bitter and resentful young man, who, taking advantage of his position, took it upon himself to turn Lina into a shadow who lives only to tend and care for him. Eventually, Lina begins to develop a friendly relationship with the doctor in charge of caring for Jamie, who sees her as a victim, locked in an impossible situation. What begins as a simple escape plan, ends up putting everyone's lives at risk and forever changing the fate of young Lina.
Thrillers were never one of my favorite genres when choosing movies or series, however, this past year I've discovered the beauty in them and have made them the top of my "to watch" list. Most of my choices have been spot on, but there is always one bad apple in the bunch, and that for me is Locked In. With a running time of only an hour and a half, this movie felt endless to me, everything happens so slowly, with so little energy and tension, that it's too easy to get bored, I think the only worthwhile part is the climax near the end, other than that the movie is one dud after another.
I've always said that I love stories that are told as puzzles, traveling from the past, to the present and back again. However, in Locked In the flashbacks or memories are so disorganized, that they end up losing coherence and there are things that simply never take relevance. The plot is sustained with very little, it starts at a supposedly shocking midpoint in the story, but from the beginning it is easy to guess how everything got to that point. Despite being all too obvious, instead of following their trajectory in the present, they decide to take us on a journey into the past that is just plain boring.
The characters have no development whatsoever and seem to be only a sketch. We only get to explore a bit of Lina's emotions and past, and when I say only a bit, it's because they spend like 5 minutes throughout the whole movie talking about how she actually came to live with Katherine and that's it, that's it. The other characters, even the antagonists, are left aside, and we are never given to know their true motivations, beyond the superficiality that we can assume as viewers, which I find somewhat surprising, since the film only has five characters.
The ending is what you would expect from a film of this genre, we are given a "twist", which to no one's surprise ends up being completely predictable, however, the final minutes are the most interesting of the entire film. Despite there being no depth in absolutely nothing, they create moments of slight tension between the characters, as we watch Lina try to escape and get out of the horrible situation she got herself into. After lies, deceit, and inconsistencies, we get a slightly satisfying ending, though it definitely could have been better.
In terms of acting, I was also disappointed, the performances, as well as the characters, made no sense and even the actors seemed bored with what they were doing. Which wasn't something that surprised me too much, as I don't know of any good performances from the cast members. Moreover, when I saw that one of the main roles was played by Famke Janssen, my expectations for the movie dropped significantly, however, I decided to give it a chance and finish watching it, it's a shame that my initial hunch was correct, and it turned out to be one of many movies that I would rather have passed up.
Visually, it is just as bland as in the rest of the aspects I have mentioned. Despite taking place practically inside a huge, luxurious estate, the mansion is just "meh", as if the set designer had taken a vacation, and they had put the worst AI to create the sets and decor of the supposed mansion. The exterior shots were some of the best, but that's because it was filmed in the vicinity of a beautiful lake, so it was hard to go wrong with that, even so I feel they failed to exploit the beauty of the exterior landscapes.
It's certainly not a movie I would recommend. Come on, I can't even say I found it entertaining because it's too slow for that, and of course, it ended up boring me too much, to the extent that I spent a good part of the movie divided between the TV and my phone screen, only that way I could finish watching it without falling asleep. So if you're reading this and then see it in your Netflix catalog, just ignore it and move on, you'll surely find something better.

Con una trama aparentemente compleja, la historia se nos va revelando a través de "flashbacks" o recuerdos. Estos nos cuentan la vida de Lina dentro de la gran mansión en la que ha vivido prácticamente toda su vida bajo la tutela y supervisión de Katherine, una famosa estrella de cine, quien se encargó de ella luego de que su madre, una vieja amiga, falleciera cuando era joven.

Con una duración de solamente una hora y media, esta película se me hizo eterna, todo pasa tan lento, con tan poca energía y tensión, que es demasiado fácil aburrirse, creo que la única parte que vale la pena es el clímax cercano al final, fuera de eso la película es un fallo tras otro.
Siempre he dicho que me encantan las historias que se cuentan como rompecabezas, viajando del pasado, al presente y viceversa. Sin embargo, en Encierro los "flashbacks" o recuerdos son tan desordenados, que terminan perdiendo coherencia y hay cosas que simplemente nunca toman relevancia. La trama se sostiene con muy poco, comienza en un punto intermedio, supuestamente impactante, en la historia, pero desde un principio es sencillo adivinar cómo llegó todo hasta ese punto. A pesar de ser demasiado obvio, en lugar de seguir su trayectoria en el presente, deciden llevarnos a un viaje al pasado que es simplemente aburrido.
Los personajes no tienen ningún tipo de desarrollo y parecen ser únicamente un bosquejo. Las tomas en exteriores fueron de lo mejorcito, pero eso es debido a que fue grabada en las inmediaciones de un lago hermoso, así que era difícil fallar en eso, aun así siento que les faltó explotar la belleza de los paisajes exteriores.
Sin duda, no es una película que recomiende. Vamos, ni siquiera puedo decir que la encontré entretenida porque es demasiado lenta para eso, y por supuesto, terminó aburriéndome demasiado, al grado que buena parte de la película me la pasé dividida entre la televisión y la pantalla de mi teléfono, solamente así pude terminar de verla sin quedarme dormida.
