As tradition dictates, October is the month of choice for most people to watch horror films, the celebration of Halloween on the last day of the month is undoubtedly the best reason for this and the film industry knows it. That's why, throughout this month, a large number of productions of the genre are released, some better than others, of course. However, for those of us who like horror, there will always be some production that is worth waiting a whole year to see. This year I had several on my radar, however, the one that arrived without looking for it and turned out to be a pleasant surprise, will be my subject for today.

Totally Killer is, right off the bat, a slasher film, telling the story of a killer who in the 1980s killed three 16-year-old girls, stabbing each of them 16 times, and vowed to one day return for the fourth. However, that's not all, this film is a convergence of horror and science fiction, how, with time travel, of course. After Jamie's mother (Kiernan Shipka) becomes the fourth victim of the murders, the young girl, with the help of her best friend, sets out on a journey through time, 35 years in the past, to stop the killer and prevent her mother's death.
Once she finds herself in the distant year of 1987, Jamie is faced with the difficult task of dealing with 80s teenagers in her attempt to save their lives. To do so, he decides to pose as a psychic and warn them that a killer is after them and that they must protect themselves. During her stay in the past, the young woman realises how strange her parents' time was. She expected to encounter only old technology, but she didn't expect to arrive in a society completely different from the one she is used to. One where, for better or worse, many things were allowed and where what is "politically incorrect" today used to be socially acceptable.
When I started watching this film I had no idea what it was about, I only knew it was horror and possibly a slasher, from the poster. Lately, I hardly watch trailers, sometimes I don't even read the synopses, as long as it has a decent score on Rotten Tomatoes it's good enough for me. And Totally Killer has a fantastic 87% from the critics and 78% from the audience, so without much hesitation I gave it a chance and it surprised me in many ways, not only is it a sci-fi slasher, but it also has a good dose of comedy which makes it even more entertaining.
I loved that it's a strange mix between Scream and Back to the Future, in fact, in the movie itself they mention it several times, which makes the situation even funnier, as they don't try to hide where it comes from, on the contrary, there are several mentions and references to those movies made by the main character herself. I recently saw another slasher film that also took references from films in the genre, especially Scream, but that one just didn't work for me because of the serious tone and false complexity they wanted to give to the plot, you can't "take inspiration" from another production in such a blatant way and try to sell us yours as something new.
That's something that Totally Killer handles brilliantly, it perceives itself as a homage to the films it's inspired by and lets us know it unabashedly. It's a film that while it's well made, as it uses the "time travel" device effectively, what works most about it is that it doesn't take itself too seriously and delivers an entertaining and light slasher, without many pretensions and that knows perfectly well what it is.
Another aspect that surprised me was the cast, in it I found several familiar faces, the two most notable for me were: Kiernan Shipka (The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and of course Julie Bowen (Modern Family), being Shipka who practically carries the weight of the whole film. As the protagonist and the one who travels through time, Jamie faces all sorts of situations, from living through how sexist the 80s could be, to discovering that "pot" at the time was really bad. The character works in large part because of Shipka's work and her ability to embody witty teenage girls, her encounters with the "politically incorrect" of the 80s were fantastic and one of the details I enjoyed most about the film because of the laughs it managed to get out of me.
The only thing Totally Killer perhaps fails to innovate too much. They seemed to think that mixing time travel with slasher horror was enough and stopped there. Halfway through the film it's easy to guess who the killer might be, although honestly, that doesn't matter too much, because the entertainment in this film comes more from the escape and stopping the killer, rather than describing who it is. On top of it all, they give us a Scream twist ending that they themselves announce with an ironic tone a few minutes before, and as I said before, this is not a film that takes itself too seriously, it knows that what it seeks is to entertain, and it does so with few pretensions and many references.
Despite having an intentionally predictable ending, that doesn't detract from its entertainment level, it's a horror comedy, quite light and enjoyable. Highly recommended for those who want to watch horror films, but don't like to watch something too scary, and of course, for those of us who enjoy slashers with a little twist on the more traditional genre.

Este año tenía varias en mi radar, sin embargo, la que llegó sin buscarla y resultó ser una grata sorpresa, será mi tema de hoy.
Totally Killer es, de buenas a primeras, una película Slasher, en la que se nos narra la historia de un asesino, quien en los años ochenta mató a tres jovencitas de 16 años apuñalándolas 16 veces a cada una y que juró regresar algún día por la cuarta. Sin embargo, eso no queda solo ahí, en esta película convergen el terror y la ciencia ficción, ¿cómo?, con viajes en el tiempo, por supuesto. Se puede decir que es una película que si bien está bien hecha, ya que usa el recurso de "viajes en el tiempo" efectivamente, lo que más funciona en ella es que no se toma a sí misma demasiado en serio y nos entrega un slasher entretenido y ligero, sin muchas pretenciones y que sabe perfectamente lo que es.
Otro aspecto que me sorprendió fue el reparto, en él encontré varias caras familiares, las dos más destacadas para mí fueron: Kiernan Shipka (The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) y por supuesto Julie Bowen (Modern Family), siendo Shipka quien prácticamente lleva el peso de toda la película. Al ser la protagonista y ser la que viaja a través del tiempo, Jamie se enfrenta a todo tipo de situaciones, desde vivir lo sexista que podían ser los años 80, hasta descubrir que la "maría" en esa época era verdaderamente mala. El personaje funciona en mucho por el trabajo de Shipka y su habilidad para encarnar a adolescentes ingeniosas, sus encuentros con lo "políticamente incorrecto" de los ochenta fueron fantásticos y uno de los detalles que más disfruté de la película por las risas que lograron sacarme.
En lo único que quizás peca Totally Killer es en no innovar demasiado. Parece que pensaron que mezclar viajes en el tiempo con terror slasher era suficiente y se detuvieron ahí. A mediados de la película es fácil adivinar quién podría ser el asesino, aunque honestamente, eso no importa demasiado, porque el entretenimiento de esta película viene más por la huida y por detener al asesino, que por describir quién es. Además de todo, nos dan un giro final a lo Scream que ellos mismos anuncian con un tono irónico unos minutos antes, y es que como dije anteriormente, no es una película que se tome a sí misma muy en serio, sabe que lo que busca es entretener, y lo hace con pocas pretenciones y muchas referencias.
A pesar de tener un final intencionalmente predecible, eso no le resta puntos a nivel de entretenimiento, es una comedia de terror, bastante ligera y disfrutable. Muy recomendable para aquellos que quieren ver películas de terror, pero que no les gusta ver algo demasiado aterrador, y por supuesto, para aquellos que disfrutamos los slashers con un pequeño giro diferente a los más tradicionales del género.
