(Review - La cosa de otro mundo)

"La cosa", es una película con una trama bastante cliché del género horror y ciencia ficción: Un grupo de investigadores se van a una base secreta en medio de la Antártida , alejados de todo rastro de civilización y hacen un descubrimiento aparentemente sorprendente: Un ser de otro planeta que los haría ricos y famosos ¿Qué podría salir mal con la cosa de otro mundo desconocida?
Hoy hablaré un poco de la película de 1982 y su precuela de 2011 que intenta explicar un poco lo que sucede al principio de aquella película clásica ochentera aunque ambas, estaban condenadas, lamentablemente (sobre todo la precuela) a caer en comparaciones ya que se basan originalmente en una obra literaria de 1938 de John W. Campbell.
Si bien, amabas tienen lo suyo y son bastantes nostálgicas con ese estilo de los 80, yo tampoco pude evitar caer en comparaciones. Sin duda, la obra literaria es muy superior, como pasa en muchos de estos casos, veremos un poco ambas películas desde mi punto de vista ya que es mi opinión personal y cada quien tendrá la suya al respecto, evitando desprestigiar una de otra.
"The Thing" is a movie with a rather cliché plot of horror and science fiction genre: A group of researchers go to a secret base in the middle of Antarctica, far from any trace of civilization, and make an apparently surprising discovery: A being from another planet that would make them rich and famous. What could go wrong with a thing from an unknown world?
Today I will talk a bit about the 1982 movie and its 2011 prequel that tries to explain a bit of what happens at the beginning of that classic 80s film, although both were doomed, unfortunately (especially the prequel), to fall into comparisons as they are originally based on a literary work from 1938 by John W. Campbell.
While both have their own charm and are quite nostalgic with that 80s style, I also couldn't help but fall into comparisons. Undoubtedly, the literary work is far superior, as is often the case in these instances. We will look at both movies from my point of view since it is my personal opinion, and everyone will have their own perspective on it, avoiding discrediting one over the other.

Empecemos con la producción de 1982 de Jhon Carpenter la cual, es un clásico del género Aliens que si bien, como dije, es una película que produce nostalgia al ser ochentera, que sea de antes no quiere decir sea mejor.
La película es bien al estilo de su director: Con mucho suspenso, tanto que se vuelve muy lenta y se hace muy pesada cayendo en el aburrimiento (Eso no quiere decir tenga producciones malas). Las actuaciones bastante flojas, con poca emoción y en algunas escenas me quedo como: ¡Asústense mas , hay una cosa ahí haciendo de las suyas! El hecho de verla en español España no ayudo mucho así que si la ven , háganlo en el idioma original y esta falta de emoción tal vez merme un poco. Eso si, la banda sonora es espectacular.
Los efectos especiales, bueno, eran los 80 así que eso se perdona. Eran mas prácticos y bueno, mas asqueantes que lo que puede producir cualquier CGI hoy en día. Esto me gusto mucho, efectos bien de la época que te asqueaban hasta la médula, no de los mejores pero lograron su cometido.
Let's start with the 1982 production by John Carpenter which is a classic of the Aliens genre that, as I said, is a movie that brings nostalgia for being from the eighties, being from before does not mean better.
The movie is very much in the style of its director: full of suspense, so much that it becomes very slow and somewhat heavy, falling into boredom (that doesn't mean it has bad productions). The performances are quite weak, lacking emotion and in some scenes I'm like: "Get more scared, there's something there up to no good!" Watching it in Spanish Spain didn't help much, so if you watch it, do it in the original language and this lack of emotion might detract a bit. However, the soundtrack is spectacular.
The special effects, well, it was the 80s so that's forgiven. They were more practical and, well, more disgusting than anything CGI can produce today. I liked this a lot, effects from that era that disgusted you to the core, not the best but they achieved their goal.

Si bien, no es de las mejores películas sobre aliens, no esta tan mal aunque innecesariamente larga y lenta. Le doy un 6/10.

Ahora vamos con la versión de 2011 de Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.
Esta tiene muy malas críticas a comparación de la de Carpenter quien maneja más el terror psicológico de los protagonistas generando un estado de psicosis mas marcado mientras que esta precuela va directo al grano sin darte un suspiro sobre los acontecimientos.
Las actuaciones son mejores y el ritmo de la trama es mas rápido aunque cae por momentos en el gore sin sentido. Es bastante mecánica pero se ancla con la producción de 1982 de manera no forzada tanto que cuando ves ambas películas, entiendes que sucedió al principio de la ochentera.
Yo creo que esta versión, se centro mas en hacer ver que tenían mejores efectos especiales que la de los ´80, tanto, que se olvidaron de la trama principal y el terror que implica estar aislados del mundo con una cosa feroz acechando. Es más estética que otra cosa y los efectos están bien, puro CGI pero no cae en "Me siento raro viendo esto". Logra su cometido de sacar un par de sustos y el misterio de esta criatura, se descubre de una forma mas esperable a diferencia de los ´80 que no entiendes tanto como lo supieron ja,ja,ja .
Now let's move on to the 2011 version by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.
This one has very bad reviews compared to Carpenter's, who handles the protagonists' psychological terror better, generating a more marked state of psychosis, while this prequel goes straight to the point without giving you a moment to breathe about the events.
The performances are better and the pace of the plot is faster, although it falls into senseless gore at times. It's quite mechanical but it's anchored with the 1982 production in an unforced way, so much so that when you watch both movies, you understand what happened at the beginning of the eighties.
I think this version focused more on showcasing that they had better special effects than the '80s one, so much so that they forgot about the main plot and the terror of being isolated from the world with a fierce thing lurking. It's more about aesthetics than anything else, and the effects are good, pure CGI but it doesn't fall into "I feel weird watching this." It achieves its purpose of delivering a couple of scares, and the mystery of this creature is revealed in a more predictable way compared to the '80s, where you don't understand as much as they knew, ha ha ha.

A pesar de ser defenestrada, no es de las peores películas sobre aliens y para pasar el rato, es bastante entretenida. En mi opinión, me gustó mas esta precuela que la original de los ´80. Le doy un 8/10.
Despite being panned, it is not among the worst movies about aliens and as a time-passer, it is quite entertaining. In my opinion, I liked this prequel more than the original from the '80s. I give it an 8/10.

Como dije, esta es mi opinión personal. Habrá gente que le gustará mas la película de antaño y otros, la más nueva o tal vez, no te guste ninguna. A mi me gusto mas la precuela pero eso no quiere decir que sea la mejor película sobre extraterrestres del mundo ya que hay muchas mil veces mejor y con mejores efectos aunque todas, parten de la misma base.
Ambas versiones tienen su encanto, me gustaron ambas, una más que otra sin embargo ¿Las volvería a ver? Tal vez no. En conclusión, para mi, no hay con que ganarle a la literatura ¡Saludos! Espero puedan ver ambas y sacar su conclusiones al respecto 😀.
As I said, this is my personal opinion. There will be people who prefer the old movie and others, the newer one or maybe, you don't like either. I liked the prequel more but that doesn't mean it is the best alien movie in the world since there are many much better ones with better effects even though all of them are based on the same premise.
Both versions have their charm, I liked both, one more than the other however Would I watch them again? Maybe not. In conclusion, for me, there's nothing like literature. Greetings! I hope you can watch both and draw your own conclusions about it 😀.
