I stumbled into yet another series on Netflix and with zero expectations, I started this series to a pleasant surprise. The series had a bit of everything want in an animation series and had me hooked from the moment I started watching it.
The anime series follows the story of Koku, a demigod/metahuman with supernatural abilities to alter memory, and some other fancy superpowers. Koku's story crisscrosses with a number of characters that include Keith, and Lily, who happens to be Koku's adopted sister.
The tale starts with the police tracking what was presumably a serial killer that targets "victims" that are actually cruel killers. However, as the tale goes on, it turns out that those murders by Killer B were both revenge killings and a signal to reach out to Yuna, his love.
Each of the three main characters had an interesting backstory to them and a rather fascinating link. Koku, the superhuman badass god was raised by Keith's dad in a facility for bioengineered children. Koku was the special one of the lot and after the facility was attacked by the eventual villain of the series, Keith's dad was killed.
Keith was charged prior to ensure he guides Koku to Canopuse or something like that. It's a weird star in the sky but in reality, there's just a blimp in that direction. Anyway, Keith was searching for Koku for the longest time until he stumbled into Lily, a doppelganger of his deceased sister Erika who was also murdered by the villain.
Each character was fighting their personal battles and they were all on a collision course.
The series was set in some convoluted time frame where there are advanced science and old school cars. The series also featured some confuckulated bloodthirsty kinds of humans, bioengineered humans with superhuman abilities, and mystical religious-type doctrines embedded in the plot.
Thick Plot
I don't know if I've ever watched a series like this one because it combined a bit of everything. It had a super-intelligent detective like in Deathnote, tales of a prophecy, and insane action scenes.
I'm doing the most to keep out spoilers because the thrill of the show is in the complicated and exciting storyline. I can't even talk about the villain without ruining the entire storyline.
However, the villain was both the likely and unlikely candidate, with Keith alluding to it on numerous occasions with the phrase "right under our noses".
This series is pretty gory with multiple scenes of violence and wicked actions scenes you might not want to expose your kids to. It is a badass series that combines mystery, action, crime, and drama in excellent proportions.
I highly recommend you watch it if you're into stuff like this.
