Better Call Saul: a smart and compelling legal drama

Well well my dear hivers, here I am once again after a long time! Once again it's a pleasure to be here.

Today I come to tell you that I'm finally watching the series Better Call Saul and I have a situation: the series is already ending, at least its last season, and I have not let go of it for weeks.

I have mixed opinions about it, like a feeling of love hate for it, which doesn't go as far as love or hate. Specifically on the one hand I like it and it has me hooked, and on the other hand, it bores me. The two things happen simultaneously. This pleases me, because I don't think this has ever happened to me with a TV show or movie.

Better Call Saul: un drama legal inteligente y atractivo

Bueno bueno mis queridos hivers, por aquí estoy una vez más y después de bastante tiempo!! Nuevamente es un placer pasar por aquí.

Hoy vengo a contarles que finalmente estoy viendo la serie Better Call Saul y tengo una situación: la serie ya está terminando, al menos su última temporada, y yo llevo semanas sin soltarla.

Tengo opiniones encontradas al respecto, como un sentimiento de amor odio por la misma, que no llega a ser amor ni odio. Concretamente por un lado me gusta y me tiene enganchada, y por otro, me aburre. Las dos cosas ocurren de manera simultánea. Esto me agrada, porque creo que jamás me había pasado esto con un programa de televisión o película.

Let's see what this story is all about.

If any of you have seen Breaking Bad, you will know who "Saul" is, he is the lawyer that Walt hires to protect himself once he has entered the drug business.

It turns out that this lawyer comes, like everyone else, with his own story, and a rather interesting one at that.

While Breaking Bad is the story of an innocent professor who becomes a producer of the best methamphetamine and consequently, one of the biggest drug dealers along with Jess, the professor's former student; Better Call Saul is the story of a lawyer with excellent potential who becomes a lawyer who backs "the guilty".

Jimmy, who is really Saul, is presented in the series as a simple person, with a somewhat dark history, who studies law online in order to follow in the footsteps of his brother, one of the best lawyers in New Mexico: Chuck McGill.

While Chuck constantly shines for his intelligence and accomplishments, Jimmy seems to be always behind, seeking to obtain the recognition of this older brother, without achieving it.

Jimmy is presented at the beginning of the series as someone who worries permanently about Chuck, who despite his high place in the world of law, suffers from a psychological condition (rather psychiatric), where he can not be exposed to any magnetic field and nothing that emits electricity or that works by it.

Thus the man lives in semi-darkness, with a camping fridge as a refrigerator, and is constantly assisted by his younger brother.

Veamos de qué va esta historia.

Si alguno ha visto Breaking Bad, sabrá quién es “Saul”, se trata del abogado que contrata Walt para protegerse una vez habiendo entrado en el negocio de las drogas.

Resulta que este abogado viene, como todos, con su propia historia, y una bastante interesante.

Mientras Breaking Bad es la historia de un inocente profesor que se convierte en productor de la mejor metanfetamina y por consecuencia, en uno de los más grandes narcotraficantes junto con Jess, ex alumno del profesor; Better Call Saul es la historia de un abogado con un excelente potencial que se convierte en un abogado que respalda a “los culpables”.

Jimmy, quien es en verdad Saul, se presenta en la serie como una persona sencilla, con una historia algo oscura, que estudia abogacía de manera online con el objetivo de seguir los pasos de su hermano, uno de los mejores abogados de Nuevo México: Chuck McGill.

Mientras Chuck brilla constantemente por su inteligencia y por sus logros, Jimmy parece ir siempre detrás buscando obtener el reconocimiento de este hermano mayor, sin lograrlo.

Jimmy se presenta al inicio de la serie como alguien que se preocupa permanentemente por Chuck, que a pesar de su altísimo lugar en el mundo del Derecho, sufre de una condición psicológica (más bien psiquiátrica), en donde no puede exponerse a ningún campo magnético y a nada que emita electricidad o que funcione por la misma.

De este modo el hombre vive en penumbras, con una heladera de camping como refrigerador, y es asistido constantemente por su hermano menor.

At this point the story makes clear Jimmy's love for Chuck, while the latter too often shows contempt, anger, disinterest and above all disappointment to Jimmy. Chuck hated that his younger brother had studied law online, as he considered that it did not make him a lawyer, and associated Jimmy's present with his past, without giving him a chance to show what kind of man he had become.

In this way, step by step, blow by blow and fall by fall, Jimmy begins to touch very closely corrupt situations, first they seem innocent and then they begin to expose the "dirtier" side of this lawyer.

His love for his brother Chuck slowly begins to cross the thin line that separates love from hate, and after hearing his older brother's last words of lovelessness, Jimmy realizes that he had never accepted him.

In the story we see another character very present, it is Kim, Jimmy's friend, partner and colleague, who always accompanies him and is there for him whenever he needs her. She is the only person who manages to capture the true essence of this lawyer, and she is the main witness of the transformation that Jimmy goes through.

Moreover, it should be emphasized that this transformation does not mean that the man always chose the "good way" to do things, but that he had a somewhat dark past, where criminal situations were tinged with a certain grace or even innocence. This same begins to apply as a lawyer, a role that suits his creative and strategist personality very well.

En este momento la historia deja en claro el amor de Jimmy por Chuck, mientras este último le muestra con demasiada frecuencia el desprecio, bronca, desinterés y sobre todo decepción a Jimmy. Chuck detestaba que su hermano menor hubiese estudiado Derecho de manera online, ya que consideraba que eso no lo convertía en abogado, y asociaba el presente de Jimmy con su pasado, sin darle chance de que demostrara en el tipo de hombre que se había convertido.

De este modo, paso a paso, golpe a golpe y caída a caída, Jimmy empieza a tocar muy de cerca situaciones corruptas, primero parecen inocentes y luego empiezan a exponer la faceta más “sucia” de este abogado.

El amor por su hermano Chuck empieza a cruzar lentamente la delgada línea que separa al amor del odio, y tras escuchar las últimas palabras de desamor de su hermano mayor, Jimmy comprende que jamás lo había aceptado.

En la historia vemos a otro personaje muy presente, se trata de Kim, la amiga, pareja y colega de Jimmy, que lo acompaña siempre y está para el cada vez que la necesita. Ella es la única persona que logra captar la verdadera esencia de este abogado, y es ella la principal testigo de la transformación que atraviesa Jimmy.

Además, cabe hacer hincapié en que esta transformación no significa que el hombre siempre elegía el “buen camino” para hacer las cosas, sino que tenía un pasado algo oscuro, en donde situaciones delictivas se teñían de cierta gracia o incluso inocencia. Esto mismo empieza a aplicar como abogado, rol que le va muy bien a su personalidad creativa y estratega.

So much for that. However, there is a parallel story, which is Mike's, who introduces us for the first time to the very owner of "Los Pollos Hermanos", later buyer of Walt's product in Breaking Bad. Yes, I'm talking about Gustavo Fring, the cold, calculating and psychopathic drug dealer who, while orchestrating his entire business, has his men do his dirty work for him.

In this way we slowly get to know the Salamancas, the rivalry between them and Fring, and the famous and unbearable (for me) Uncle Hector, who with his little bell gives away everything he sees in Braking Bad.

Mike is somehow presented at the beginning of the series Better Call Saul, as the link between the world of drug trafficking and Jimmy McGill.

While we see on the one hand the evolution of this character of the law, the New Mexico drug cartel and its leaders, are showing their moves, their intentions, their tricks and of course their management in terms of revenge, collections, demands, obligations and so on.

In this world the series also exposes the evolution of a character that in my opinion is excellent, and that is Nacho Varga, who at the beginning of the story is shown as a successful gang member and drug dealer, obedient to his boss, but at the same time compassionate. He is even a bit of a victim of the system he fell into. But little by little and half because he has no other choice, he must put on the costume of a real criminal. Something similar happens to the aforementioned Mike.

A lo largo de la historia Jimmy juega limpio, juega sucio, es suspendido de su profesión y empieza a adentrarse en el mundo del crimen, empezando así a soñar con dedicarse al Derecho Penal una vez recupere la habilitación para ejercer.

Hasta aquí he llegado. Sin embargo, hay una historia paralela, que es la de Mike, quien nos presenta por primera vez al mismísimo dueño de “Los Pollos Hermanos”, luego comprador del producto de Walt en Breaking Bad. Sí, estoy hablando de Gustavo Fring, el frío, calculador y psicópata narcotraficante que mientras orquesta todo su negocio, tiene a sus hombres que hacen el trabajo sucio por el.

De este modo llegamos, lentamente a conocer a los Salamanca, a la rivalidad que existe entre estos y Fring, y al famoso e insoportable (para mí) tío Héctor, que con su campanita delata cuanta cosa ve en Braking Bad.

Mike de alguna manera se presenta al inicio de la serie Better Call Saul, como el nexo entre el mundo del narcotráfico y Jimmy McGill.

Mientras vemos por un lado la evolución de este personaje del Derecho, el cartel de droga de Nuevo México y las cabecillas del mismo, van mostrando sus movidas, sus intenciones, sus trucos y por supuesto que sus manejos en cuanto a venganza, cobros, exigencias, obligaciones y demás.

En ese mundo la serie también expone la evolución de un personaje que a mi parecer es excelente, y es el de Nacho Varga, quien al inicio de la historia se muestra un pandillero y narcotraficante exitoso, obediente con su jefe, pero al mismo tiempo compasivo. Hasta es un poco víctima del sistema en el que cayó. Pero poco a poco y medio porque no tiene otra opción, debe ponerse el traje de un verdadero criminal. Algo similar le va pasando al ya mencionado Mike.

In addition to everything I have told you, this series is exquisite for professionals or lovers of law and psychology. Beyond all the legal issues of this story, the evolution of the different characters and the very nature of some of them is fascinating.

For example, something that caught my attention is the love story of Kim and Jimmy, who, without the need to make romantic demonstrations, make clear their mutual respect.

I think it's a very cleverly done series, and its creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould (src ) have put a lot of focus on detail.

Además de todo lo que les he comentado, esta serie es exquisita para profesionales o amantes del Derecho y la Psicología. Más allá de todos los temas legales propios de esta historia, la evolución de los diferentes personajes y la misma naturaleza de algunos es fascinante.

Por ejemplo, algo que me llamó mucho la atención, es la historia de amor de Kim y Jimmy, que sin necesidad de hacer demostraciones de romanticismo, dejan en claro su respeto mutuo.

Creo que es una serie realizada de una manera muy inteligente, y sus creadores Vince Gilligan y Peter Gould (src ) han puesto mucho foco en el detalle.
