Escrita y dirigida por Christian Petzold
I've been wanting to see this movie for a long time for two main reasons. The first is that it's written and directed by Christian Petzold, the genius behind Phoenix, Barbara and Undine, three very good films that I have seen in the last year and that I liked; and the second is that it stars Paula Beer (star of Undine), one of the best European actresses I've seen in recent times.
Hacía tiempo que quería ver esta película por dos razones principales. La primera es que está escrita y dirigida por Christian Petzold, el genio detrás de Phoenix, Barbara y Undine, tres muy buenas películas que he visto en el último año y que me gustaron; y la segunda es que en ella actúa Paula Beer (protagonista de Undine), una de las mejores actrices europeas que he visto en los últimos tiempos.
The original title in German is Roter Himmel and in English is Afire from which something about the plot can be inferred, but what is deduced ends up being something external to the central story of the movie. Leon and Felix are two friends who go to Felix's father's summer house for a few days to work on their projects. Leon is a writer and is currently working on a manuscript that is not very convincing to his editor and Felix wants to apply to art school and wants to take photographs for a project he has in mind. The idea is to spend a few days in that summer house, rest, go to the beach, enjoy a little and each one work on their goal. At first glance, Felix seems calmer and less worried than Leon, who doesn't even want to go to the beach because he needs to work on his book, but then we realize other things. Now, this plot that appeared to be serene will gain in intensity with the entry into the scene of Nadja (Paula Beer), a woman who is also staying at the house because Felix's mother allowed her to, forgetting that her son would be there during those same dates. At first, Nadja's presence is ethereal, almost as if she isn't there. You can see traces of her passage and her presence and above all you can hear her at night on the other side of the wall of the room the boys occupy, but then, little by little, they will share more with her.
El título original en alemán es Roter Himmel y en español es Cielo Rojo de donde se puede inferir alago de la trama, pero eso que se deduce acaba siendo algo externo a la historia central de la película. Leon y Felix son dos amigos que se van unos días a la casa del padre de Felix a trabajar en sus proyectos. Leon es escritor y actualmente trabaja en un manuscrito que no convence mucho a su editor y Felix quiere postularse a una escuela de arte y quiere tomar fotografías para un proyecto que tiene en mente. La idea es pasar unos días en esa casa de verano, descansar, ir a la playa, disfrutar un poco y trabajar cada uno en su objetivo. A primera vista Felix parece más tranquilo y menos preocupado que Leon que ni siquiera quiere ir a la playa porque necesita trabajar en su libro, pero luego nos vamos dando cuenta de otras cosas. Ahora bien, esta trama que aparentaba ser serena ganará en intensidad con la entrada en escena de Nadja (Paula Beer) una mujer que también se está quedando en la casa porque la madre de Felix se lo permitió, olvidando que su hijo estaría en el lugar durante esas mismas fechas. Al principio, la presencia de Nadja es etérea, casi como si no estuviera allí. Se ven huellas de su paso y su presencia y sobre todo se escucha durante las noches al otro lado de la pared de la habitación que ocupan los chicos, pero luego, poco a poco, irán compartiendo más con ella.
Felix is more open and also seems more fun than Leon. That's why he gets along well with Nadja from the beginning and also with Devid, a kind of boyfriend that Nadja has and who visits her at night to have sex. On the other hand, Leon is more reclusive, not only with his own friend but also with these people who have just arrived for what was intended to be a quiet stay and who have harmed - so he believes - his calm.
Felix es más abierto y parece también más divertido que Leon. Por eso se lleva bien con Nadja desde el principio y también con Devid, una especie de novio que tiene Nadja y que la visita por las noches para tener sexo. En cambio, Leon es más huraño, no sólo con su propio amigo sino también con estas personas recién llegadas a lo que pretendía ser una estadía tranquila y que han perjudicado - eso cree - su calma.
Now, Leon's annoyance is not with them, but with himself. As a result of his editor's comments and his imminent visit, Leon begins to doubt his abilities as a writer and this frustrates him. Leon is one of those people who finds it difficult to feel happy about the success of others because it reminds him of his own failure and because he's so focused on his own life and his anguish that he doesn't realize what is happening around him. If he were kinder, he would seem naive to us, but his character is such that it's difficult for us to empathize with him even if we understand him. As the film progresses, the environment closes in and the hot, dry summer that has caused uncontrollable forest fires a few kilometers from the coast where they are located will gradually catch up with them until we begin to fear for their fate. When the sky on the horizon lights up red, we fear the worst and believe that even if the flames blow in the opposite direction, the fires can reach them. But, without being able to avoid being corny, the real fire is taking place inside Leon who doesn't know how to act, how to control himself and above all how to validate himself in front of Nadja, an attractive and interesting woman who stole his dream from the first time he heard her, literally and figuratively.
Ahora bien, la molestia de Leon no es con ellos, sino consigo mismo. A raíz de los comentarios de su editor y de la iminente visita de este, Leon comienza a dudar de sus capacidades como escritor y eso lo frustra. Leon es de las personas a quien le cuesta sentir felicidad por el éxito de los demás porque le recuerdan su propio fracaso y porque está tan centrado en su propia vida y en su angustia que no se da cuenta de lo que sucede a su alrededor. Si fuese más amable, nos parecería ingenuo, pero su carácter es tal que nos cuesta empatizar con él aunque lo entendamos. Conforme avanza la cinta el ambiente se va cerrando y el verano caluroso y seco que ha provocado incendios forestales incontrolables a unos cuantos kilómetros de la costa en la que ellos se encuentran se les echará encima poco a poco hasta que comenzamos a temer por sus destinos. Cuando el cielo en el horizonte se ilumina de rojo, tememos lo peor y creemos que aunque las llamas soplen en dirección contraria, los incendios pueden alcanzarlos. Pero, sin poder evitar ser cursis, el verdadero incendio se está produciendo dentro de Leon que no sabe cómo actuar, cómo controlarse y sobre todo cómo validarse a sí mismo frente a Nadja, una mujer atractiva e interesante que le robó el sueño desde la primera vez que la escuchó, literal y figurativamente.
The performances are very good, the script moves slowly towards a somewhat unexpected outcome and both the setting and the direction are also very good. There are some plot twists that I didn't see coming and I think the reason the movie left me with a good feeling is because the final sequence, from climax to denouement, was the one I liked the most.
Las actuaciones son muy buenas, el guión avanza lentamente hacia un desenlace algo inesperado y tanto la ambientación como la dirección son también muy buenas. Hay algunos giros en la trama que no vi venir y creo que la razón por la que la película me dejó con una buena sensación es porque la secuencia final, desde el clímax hasta el desenlace, fue la que más me gustó.
Afire has many emotional nuances, there are dramatic scenes with a powerful visual force, but also some very funny moments and others of black comedy. It's less symbolic than Undine and the central drama is less morally complicated than Barbara, for example. In Afire the revenge of Phoenix is not present, but other themes are present such as the internal conflicts of each person, the search for their own space, the complexity of romantic relationships, the relationship between pain and the process creativity, how stupid it is to judge a person, the way people can surprise us, new opportunities and many other things. Christian Petzold is a talented director and a writer who reflects all these complexities very well and Afire, his most recent film, is a good example of his style (he was awarded at the Berlin Festival for this film). Afire tiene muchos matices emocionales, hay escenas dramáticas de una poderosa fuerza visual, pero también algunos momentos muy divertidos y otros de comedia negra. Es menos simbólica que Undine y el drama central es menos complicado moralmente que Barbara, por ejemplo. En Afire no está presente la venganza de Phoenix, pero sí otros temas como los conflictos internos de cada persona, la búsqueda de un espacio propio, la complejidad de las relaciones románticas, la relación entre el dolor y el proceso creativo, lo tonto que es juzgar a una persona, la forma en que nos puede sorprender la gente, las nuevas oportunidades y muchas otras cosas más. Christian Petzold es un director de talento y un escritor que refleja muy bien todas estas complejidades y Afire, su película más reciente, es una buena muestra de su estilo (fue premiado en el Festival de Berlín por esta cinta).
