Now, with less than a week to go until the Oscars, just like in previous years, I want to leave here the list of my favorites. I usually do this exercise with myself, but if you want to replicate it, it can be very fun to do it with some friends or acquaintances who are also movie fans.
Ahora sí, a menos de una semana de que se celebre la entrega de los Premios Oscars, al igual que en los años anteriores, quiero dejar por acá el listado con mis favoritos. Acostumbro a hacer este ejercicio conmigo mismo, pero si quieren replicarlo puede ser muy divertido hacerlo con algunos amigos o conocidos que también sean fanáticos del cine.
What I do is a kind of pool with myself in which I write down two names per category. The first is my favorite candidate for the award and the other is my second choice. If I get the first one right, I get five points and if I get my second option right I get two points. To make everything even more rounded, of the night's award-winning categories I am only going to choose twenty for my dynamic. The reason? so that the maximum possible score is equal to 100. Another reason is that there are categories for which I almost never get to see the nominees. However, I don't intend to leave all these names in one post because it would be too long, so I'm going to divide it into three parts. The third part that I will publish will be the one corresponding to the most important awards of the night, the performances and the direction; For the second installment I will include the scripts, soundtrack, international film and animated film. And in this first installment I will focus only on the categories related to the technical aspects of cinema: editing, cinematography, production design, costumes, makeup and hair, sound and visual effects. Once those three posts are made, I will make a fourth one that will be the summary of all the categories with my bets for the night of the gala. Sounds like fun, right?
Lo que yo hago es una especie de quiniela conmigo mismo en la que anoto dos nombres por categoría. El primero es el de mi candidato favorito para el premio y el otro es mi segunda opción. Si acierto el primero, me sumo cinco puntos y si acierto con mi segunda opción me sumo dos puntos. Para hacer todo aún más redondo, de las categorías premiadas de la noche solamente voy a escoger veinte para mi dinámica ¿la razón? para que el máximo puntaje posible sea igual a 100. Otra razón es que existen categorías para las cuales casi nunca logro ver a los nominados. Sin embargo, no pretendo dejar todos estos nombres en un post porque sería demasiado largo, así que voy a dividirlo en tres partes. La tercera parte que publicaré será la correspondiente a los premios más importantes de la noche, las actuaciones y la dirección; para la segunda entrega incluiré los guiones, banda sonora, película internacional y película de animación. Y en esta primera entrega me concentraré solamente en las categorías relacionadas con los aspectos técnicos del cine: montaje, fotografía, diseño de producción, vestuario, maquillaje y peluquería, sonido y efectos visuales. Una vez hechas esas tres publicaciones haré una cuarta que será el resumen de todas las categorías con mis apuestas para la noche de la gala. Suena divertido, ¿cierto?
It's worth noting that I didn't see all of the nominated films, although I did see most of them, which is why in some cases I have less information to choose an option, but I think that adds a touch more fun to the situation. Now, let's start:
Vale la pena señalar que no vi la totalidad de las películas nominadas, aunque sí la mayoría, razón por la cual en algunos casos tengo menos información para escoger alguna opción, pero creo que eso le da un toque más de diversión a la situación. Ahora sí, comencemos:
Among the nominees for Best Sound there are a variety of stories: two action films, The Creator and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One; two biopics, Maestro and Oppenheimer; and a foreign drama, The Zone of interest. The use of sound in the latter is somewhat unusual for this type of film and shows it from the first minute in which an annoying and prolonged hum accompanies the black screen and although I always enjoy the sound of Nolan's films, I think that the blockbusters and action movies usually rely a lot on this resource, so The Creator and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One have great possibilities, as well as in the category of Best Visual Effects in which both of them compete against Napoleon, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the favorite of many, Godzilla: Minus One, a film celebrated by critics and considered the best film ever made about this enormous reptile and one of the best stories in kaiju cinema. To complete these first three categories, Golda (I didn't see it), Maestro, Oppenheimer compete in Best Makeup and Hairstyling, all of them very good, but the ones I liked the most were the works in Poor Things and in Society of the Snow.
Dentro de los nominados a Mejor Sonido hay variedad de historias: dos películas de acción, The Creator y Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One; dos biopics Maestro y Oppenheimer; y un drama extranjero, The Zone of interest. El uso del sonido en esta última es algo inusual para este tipo de películas y lo muestra desde el primer minuto en el que un zumbido molesto y prolongado acompaña la pantalla en negro y aunque disfruto siempre el sonido de las películas de Nolan, creo que los blockbusters y las películas de acción suelen apostar mucho a este recurso, por lo que The Creator y Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One tienen grandes posibilidades, al igual que en la categoría de Mejores Efectos Visuales en las que ambas compiten contra Napoleon, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 y la favorita de muchos, Godzilla: Minus One, cinta celebrada por la crítica y considerada la mejor película que se ha hecho sobre este enorme reptil y una de las mejores historias del cine kaiju. Para completar estas primeras tres categorías, en Mejor maquillaje y peluquería compiten Golda (no la vi), Maestro, Oppenheimer, todas ellas muy buenas, pero las que más me gustaron fueron los trabajos en Poor Things y en La sociedad de la nieve.
Past Eras totally took over the Best Costume Design category, as all the stories are set in the past and although some wardrobes have more conservative clothes, I think they all did a great job: Jacqueline Durran for Barbie, Jacqueline West for Killers of the Flower Moon, Janty Yates and David Crossman for Napoleon, Ellen Mirojnick for Oppenheimer and my favorite, Holly Waddington for her work for Poor Things who obviously plays a fundamental role in the development of Bella Baxter (the protagonist played by Emma Stone). The colors, textures and designs are retro but avant-garde, like futuristic but vintage, lots of color, different fabrics, everything perfectly achieved. I think Holly deserves that statuette to go to Yorgos Lanthimos' film, which I would also like to see given the statuette for Best Production Design. Because, let's see, the Napoleon thing is brutal, the Oppenheimer thing is not to be said, and the Scorsese film is wonderful, but next to all those shots in outdoor environments, I am left - in this category and on this occasion - with those who bet like old Hollywood on filming inside a studio and building an entire world, just as James Price, Shona Heath and Zsuzsa Mihalek did for Poor Things or the Barbieland set that Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer did for Barbie.
Las épocas pasadas se tomaron por completo la categoría de Mejor Vestuario, ya que todas las historias están ambientadas en el pasado y aunque algunos guardarropas tienen prendas más conservadoras, creo que todas hiscieron un gran trabajo: Jacqueline Durran para Barbie, Jacqueline West para Killers of the Flower Moon, Janty Yates y David Crossman para Napoleón, Ellen Mirojnick para Oppenheimer y mi favorita, Holly Waddington por su trabajo para Poor Things que obviamente juega un papel fundamental en el desarrollo de Bella Baxter (la protagonista interpretada por Emma Stone). According to Wikipedia the Oscar for Best Editing recognizes the editing of the film production, that is, it refers to "the narrative or rhythmic order of the elements that make up the chronology of a film" and this year the five nominees did an extraordinary job. Kevin Tent's work for The Holdovers may seem the simplest compared to the others, but it has its merit, as does Yorgos Mavropsaridis' work for Poor Things; but which one to choose from the other three? Thelma Schoonmaker excelled with the narration of Killers of the Flower Moon and Jennifer Lame has the merit of having done the editing of Oppenheimer, which was not only challenging due to its length, the narrative perspectives, but also captivated millions of people all over the world and if that were not enough, that Christopher Nolan hires you to edit one of his films? What better credential than that? That's why she's my favorite, but I also loved what Laurent Sénéchal did in Anatomy of a Fall. Much of the charm of this film is in its narrative order. On the other hand, it is a little easier for me to choose my favorite for Best Cinematography, a also difficult category. I didn't see what Edward Lachman did for El Conde and although the works of Matthew Libatique for Maestro and Robbie Ryan for Poor Things were very good, what Hoyte van Hoytema (Oppenheimer) and Rodrigo Prieto (Killers of the Flower Moon) did was superlative.
De acuerdo con Wikipedia el Oscar al Mejor Montaje reconoce la edición de la producción cinematográfica, es decir que se refierea "al orden narrativo o rítmico de los elementos que conforman la cronología de una película" y este año los cinco nominados hicieron un trabajo extraordinario. Lo de Kevin Tent para The Holdovers quizás parezca lo más sencillo al lado de los demás, pero tiene su mérito, al igual que el trabajo de Yorgos Mavropsaridis para Poor Things; pero ¿cuál escoger de los otros tres? Thelma Schoonmaker se lució con la narración de Killers of the Flower Moon y Jennifer Lame tiene el mérito de haber hecho el montaje de Oppenheimer, que no sólo fue desafiante por su duración, por las perspectivas de narración, sino que además cautivó a millones de personas en todo el mundo y por si fuera poco, ¿que Christopher Nolan te contrate para montar una de sus películas? ¿qué mejor credencial que esa? Por eso es mi favorita, pero amé también lo que hizo Laurent Sénéchal en Anatomy of a Fall. Gran parte del encanto de esta película está en su orden narrativo. En cambio, se me hace un poco más fácil escoger mi favorito para Mejor Fotografía, una categoría también difícil. No vi lo que hizo Edward Lachman para El Conde y aunque los trabajos de Matthew Libatique para Maestro y de Robbie Ryan para Poor Things fueron muy buenos, lo que hicieron Hoyte van Hoytema (Oppenheimer) y Rodrigo Prieto (Killers of the Flower Moon) fue superlativo.
Furthermore, although neither has won the Oscar, their experience is absurdly wonderful. It's the fourth time that Hoyte van Hoytema works with Nolan, after Dunkirk, Tenet and the incredible Interstellar, but he also worked on one of my favorite films of all time, Her by Spike Jonze, does that seem like a great achievement? Wait until you see the Mexican Rodrigo Prieto's profile: he did the cinematography for Amores Perros, Babel, 21 Grams, The Wolf of Wall Street, Argo, Silence (beautiful work for this Scorsese film), Barbie, The Irishman and Brokeback Mountain, having been nominated by these last two, will the third time be the charm for Prieto?
