Nominada a los premios Oscar
For a long time the nominees for - and especially the winners of - Best Animated Film at the Oscars are similar. There's always a title from Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks or a Japanese film. It's clear that these brands know how to do their job very well, but I almost always enjoy more when something different appears among the nominees, as happened with Isle of Dogs by Wes Anderson, The Breadwinner, or the wonderful Loving Vincent.
Hace ya mucho tiempo que las nominadas a - y sobre todo las ganadoras de - Mejor Película de Animación en los premios Oscar se parecen. Siempre figura algún título de Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks o alguna película japonesa. Está claro que estas marcas saben hacer muy bien su trabajo, pero casi siempre disfruto más cuando aparece algo diferente entre los nominados, como sucedió con Isle of Dogs de Wes Anderson, The Breadwinner, o la maravillosa Loving Vincent.
Because animated movies don't necessarily have to be children's movies. Anomalisa, Persepolis and La tortue rouge, to name just a few, are great stories for a more adult audience. This year, among the usual candidates, there's a moving story that, although it presents a childish animation, contains a message for all audiences. The fact that the film doesn't have lines of dialogue and that everything is understood through gestures or visual sequences means that - like love and music - this story transcends the barrier of language and age: anyone anywhere in the world can watch this film and understand it. And love it. This is Robot Dreams, directed by Pablo Berger and written by himself based on the graphic novel by Sara Varon; and although the story is set in New York in the eighties or nineties (the towers of the World Trade Center can still be seen in the city landscape) it's a Spain-France co-production that has garnered numerous nominations and awards in Europe, including two Goya Awards (Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Animated Film) and a European Film Award (Best Animated Film). And the animation, although simple and classic, is very well created and recreated. New York City feels very real on screen and the attention to detail is to take your hat off. Everything is very well done.
Porque las películas animadas no necesariamente tienen que ser películas para niños. Anomalisa, Persepolis y La tortue rouge, por nombrar sólo algunas, son grandes historias para un público más adulto. Este año, en medio de los candidatos de siempre, hay una historia conmovedora que aunque presenta una animación infantil contiene un mensaje para todo público. El hecho de que la película no cuente con líneas de diálogo y que todo sea comprendido mediante gestos o secuencias visuales hace que - como el amor y la música - esta historia transcienda la barrera del lenguaje y la edad: cualquier persona en cualquier parte del mundo puede ver esta cinta y la va a entender. Y la va a amar. Se trata de Robot Dreams, dirigida por Pablo Berger y escrita por él mismo a partir de la novela gráfica de Sara Varon; y aunque la historia está ambientada en Nueva York en los años ochenta o noventa (aún se ven las torres del World Trade Center en el paisaje de la ciudad) es una co-producción España-Francia que ha cosechado numerosas nominaciones y premios en Europa, incluyendo dos Premios Goya (Mejor guion adaptado y Mejor film de animación) y un Premio del Cine Europeo (Mejor película de animación). Y es que la animación, aunque sencilla y clásica, está muy bien creada y recreada. La ciudad de Nueva York se siente muy real en la pantalla y la atención a los detalles es para quitarse el sombrero. Todo está muy bien logrado.
Robot Dreams tells the story of Dog (yes, it's a dog that has no name; all the inhabitants of the city are animals), a lonely dog who in the midst of the monotony of his loneliness, boredom and sadness (zapping, microwave food, lonely nights) he decides to acquire a robot that he has to build himself, to be his friend. And from the moment he manages to assemble Robot and turn it on, his life takes a 180 degree turn.
Robot Dreams cuenta la historia de Dog (sí, es un perro que no tiene nombre; todos los habitantes de la ciudad son animales), un perro solitario que en medio de la monotonía de su soledad, aburrimiento y tristeza (zapping, comida de microondas, noches solitarias) decide adquirir un robot que tiene que construir él mismo, para que sea amigo. Y desde el instante en que logra ensamblar a Robot y encenderlo, su vida da un giro de ciento ochenta grados.
Now everything is laughter, fun, dancing, music, walks to the park, summer on the beach, smiles. Robot brings life to Dog's existence and vice versa, because Robot also really enjoys the company of his canine friend. Somehow that relationship evoked Her, by Spike Jonze, because Dog doesn't dare to meet other animals but rather a robot, a product of technology, something that attracts a lot of attention. And then, after seeing how these friends become inseparable, an event disrupts that happiness because Dog is forced to abandon Robot on the beach for a while (I think you can see why in some trailers, but I don't want to reveal it in case you don't know). From there we follow the adventures and misadventures of Dog and Robot, who separately long for a reunion, although apparently life has other plans for them. It's at the same time frustrating, desperate, beautiful, touching, moving, understandable, hopeful and heartbreaking to see how time passes away from this couple who loved each other so much. Robot Dreams is an exploration of loneliness, but also of the fragility of human relationships and especially the passage of time... however, although life separates us from those we love, a part of them survives within us and becomes a treasure that - often without knowing it - we share with others.
Ahora todo son risas, diversión, bailes, música, idas al parque, verano en la playa, sonrisas. Robot trae vida a la existencia de Dog y visceversa, porque Robot también disfruta mucho de la compañía de su amigo canino. De alguna forma esa relación me evocó Her, de Spike Jonze, porque Dog no se atreve a conocer a otros animales sino a un robot, un producto de la tecnología, algo que llama mucho la atención. Y entonces, después de ver cómo estos amigos se vuelven inseparables, un evento trastoca esa felicidad porque Dog se ve forzado a abandonar a Robot en la playa durante una temporada (creo que en algunos avances se ve el por qué, pero no quiero revelarlo por si acaso no lo saben). A partir de allí vamos siguiendo las aventuras y desventuras de Dog y Robot, quienes por separado anhelan un reencuentro, aunque al parecer la vida les tenga preparados otros planes. Es a la vez frustrante, desesperante, hermoso, enternecedor, conmovedor, comprensible, esperanzador y descorazonador ver cómo el tiempo pasa alejando a este par que se quería tanto. Robot Dreams es una exploración de la soledad, pero también de la fragilidad de las relaciones humanas y en especial del paso del tiempo... sin embargo, aunque la vida nos separe de aquellos a quienes amamos, una parte de ellos sobrevive dentro de nosotros y se convierte en un tesoro que - muchas veces sin saberlo - compartimos con los demás.
What makes an animated film considered better than others? The complexity of its animation? its rarity? its message? Robot Dreams features simpler animation than Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, does not have the strange creatures and cryptic messages of The Boy and the Heron, lacks the heroics of Nimona, and doesn't disguise complex themes like xenophobia the way Elemental does; However, despite this, Robot Dreams seemed more endearing to me for one simple reason: it's pure emotion. The absence of dialogues and words means that each gesture shows not only an attitude but a state of mind, an emotion. Dog and Robot show and make us feel joy, sadness, love, loneliness, fear, disappointment and a film that makes you feel stays not only in your head but also on the left side of your chest. More than fifty years ago Philip Dick asked himself Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheeps? and this film is an answer: no, robots (at least our protagonist) dream of love, friendship, joy, fantasy and sometimes with the horror of oblivion, surrounded by an infectious melody of Earth, Wind & Fire. ¿Qué hace que una película de animación sea considerada mejor que las demás? ¿lo complejo de su animación? ¿su rareza? ¿su mensaje? Robot Dreams presenta una animación más sencilla que Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, no tiene las criaturas extrañas y los mensajes crípticos de The Boy and the Heron, carece de la heroicidad de Nimona y no disfraza temas complejos como la xenofobia de la forma en que lo hace Elemental; sin embargo, a pesar de ello, Robot Dreams me pareció más entrañable por una sencilla razón: es emoción pura. La ausencia de diálogos y palabras, hace que cada gesto muestre no sólo una actitud sino un estado de ánimo, una emoción. Dog y Robot muestran y nos hacen sentir alegría, tristeza, amor, soledad, miedo, decepción y una película que te hace sentir se te queda no sólo en la cabeza sino también en el lado izquierdo del pecho. Hace más de cincuenta años que Philip Dick se preguntó ¿Sueñan los androides con ovejas eléctricas? y esta película es una respuesta: no, los robots (al menos nuestro protagonista) sueña con el amor, la amistad, la alegría, la fantasía y a veces con el horror del olvido, rodeado de una contagiosa melodía de Earth, Wind & Fire. Son sueños muy humanos y a pesar de las apariencias y de los dibujos que vemos en la pantalla, esta película también lo es, ¿alguno de ustedes ha visto Robot Dreams? ¿qué les pareció?
