For today I wanted to review some of the films I saw last week and found that not only had I seen three romantic stories, but they also shared a thematic connection. So I thought “What if I talk about all three?”, because the truth is that these three movies, in one way or another, talk about how sometimes love appears but the timing is not right, what to do then: jump in or wait? As the song Hold the line by Toto says: “Love isn't always on time”.
Para hoy quería reseñar alguna de las películas que vi la semana pasada y encontré que no sólo había visto tres historias románticas, sino que además compartían una conexión temática. Entonces pensé "¿Y si hablo de las tres?", porque lo cierto es que estas tres películas, de alguna u otra forma, hablan de cómo a veces el amor aparece en el momento inoportuno, ¿qué hacer entonces? ¿lanzarse o esperar? Como dice la canción Hold the line de Toto: "Love isn't always on time".
First, and thanks to MUBI, I was able to once again watch that romantic classic that is When Harry Met Sally starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal. Harry Burns (Crystal) and Sally Albright (Ryan) meet in college days almost by chance, when she offers to give Harry a ride in her car to New York because they're both headed there and Harry is dating a friend of Sally's. On the way they talk about friendship between men and women, a central theme of the film to which they return several times. At first, Harry is convinced that friendship between a man and a woman is impossible and Sally believes the opposite. As the years go by and after several chance encounters the opinions they had initially expressed - on this and other issues - will change and the time will come when they will start to get close enough to begin to question their feelings. This film has a lot of talent in front of and behind the camera because in addition to the starring duo, it has a screenplay by the incredible Nora Ephron (director of Sleepless in Seattle and You've got mail, among others) and direction by Rob Reiner (Misery, A Few Good Men, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride), but what makes this story timeless is that it touches on timeless issues: can a man and a woman be friends without getting romantically involved? And then, can one meet the love of one's life at the wrong time? What to do if one recognizes in that person who has always been there the possibility of something more?
Primero, y gracias a MUBI, pude ver una vez más ese clásico romántico que es When Harry Met Sally protagonizado por Meg Ryan y Billy Crystal. Harry Burns (Crystal) y Sally Albright (Ryan) se conocen en la época de la universidad casi por casualidad, cuando ella se ofrece a llevar a Harry en su coche hasta Nueva York porque ambos se dirigen hacia allá y Harry está saliendo con una amiga de Sally. En el camino hablan sobre la amistad entre hombres y mujeres, tema central de la película al que vuelven varias veces. En principio, Harry está convencido de que la amistad entre un hombre y una mujer es imposible y Sally cree lo contrario. Con el paso de los años y tras varios encuentros fortuitos las opiniones que habían emitido en un inicio - sobre ese y otros temas - irán cambiando y llegará el momento en el que comenzarán a acercarse lo suficiente como para comenzar a cuestionar sus sentimientos. Esta película tiene mucho talento delante y detrás de cámara porque además de la dupla protagonista, cuenta con el guion de la increíble Nora Ephron (directora de Sleepless in Seattle y You've got mail, entre otras) y la dirección de Rob Reiner (Misery, A Few Good Men, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride), pero lo que hace que esta historia no pierda vigencia es que toca temas atemporales ¿pueden un hombre y una mujer ser amigos sin involucrarse románticamente? y luego ¿puede uno conocer al amor de su vida en el momento equivocado? ¿qué hacer si uno reconoce en esa persona que siempre ha estado allí la posibilidad de algo más?
And as if that wasn't enough it also has that mythical line Harry says to Sally: “When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible”. Beautiful, isn't it? Well, after getting excited again with this story that I already knew, MUBI suggested another romantic classic that I hadn't seen and that started that whole fascination that women had in the nineties with Hugh Grant. Before Sense and Sensibility, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones's Diary and Love Actually there was Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Y como si eso no fuera suficiente también tiene esa mítica frase que Harry le dice a Sally: "Cuando te das cuenta de que quieres pasar el resto de tu vida con alguien, quieres que el resto de tu vida comience lo antes posible". Hermoso, ¿cierto? bien, después de volver a emocionarme con esta historia que ya conocía, MUBI me sugirió otro clásico romántico que yo no había visto y que inició toda esa fascinación que las mujeres tuvieron en los años noventa con Hugh Grant. Antes de Sense and Sensibility, de Notting Hill, de Bridget Jones's Diary y Love Actually estuvo Four Weddings and a Funeral.
In this story we meet Charles (Hugh Grant) and his friends, all of them single and unattached who have reached an age when their acquaintances start getting married. I don't know if it has happened to you, but there's a time when groups of friends begin to celebrate wedding after wedding at a pace that is sometimes difficult to follow (in my case, for example, I attended eight weddings in the same year); then a kind of brotherhood is formed around these events where more or less the same people always go. But, at one of the weddings to which the group has been invited, Charles meets Carrie (Andie Macdowell), a young American girl who amazes him from the first time he sees her. Awkwardly, Charles manages to get close and manages to spend the night with her, but they don't see each other again for several years until someone else invites them to another wedding. But this time, Carrie is engaged to be married... this film is similar to When Harry Met Sally in the fact that it shows a relationship that is prolonged over time through brief, sporadic encounters and also in the fact that it must take several meetings before they are both free. Sometimes it's she who 's with someone else, sometimes it's he, but the attraction is undeniable and undying. A little more fantasy than the previous one, this story is based on the belief that we all have a special person we are going to love for the rest of our lives, the magical The One, and although it does have romantic scenes and some very funny ones, the truth is that I didn't think it was good enough to have become a romantic classic of the nineties. But well, it's a matter of taste.
En esta historia conocemos a Charles (Hugh Grant) y sus amigos, todos ellos solteros y sin compromiso que han llegado a una edad en la que sus conocidos comienzan a casarse. No sé si les ha pasado, pero hay una época en los grupos de amigos que comienzan a celebrarse boda tras boda a un ritmo a veces difícil de seguir (en mi caso, por ejemplo, asistí a ocho bodas en un mismo año); entonces se forma una especie de cofradía alrededor de estos eventos en donde siempre van más o menos los mismos. Pero, en una de las bodas a la que el grupo ha sido invitado, Charles conoce a Carrie (Andie Macdowell), una joven norteamericana que lo maravilla desde la primera vez que la ve. Con torpeza, Charles logra acercarse y consigue pasar la noche con ella, pero no vuelven a verse durante varios años hasta que alguien más los invita a otra boda. Pero esta vez, Carrie está comprometida para casarse... esta película se parece a When Harry Met Sally en el hecho de que muestra una relación que se prolonga en el tiempo a través de encuentros breves y esporádicos y también en el hecho de que deben pasar varios encuentros hasta que ambos están libres. A veces es ella la que está con alguien más, otras veces es él, pero la atracción es innegable e imperecedera. Un poco más fantasiosa que la anterior, esta historia parte de esa creencia de que todos tenemos a una persona especial que vamos a amar el resto de nuestra vida, la mágica The One, y aunque sí tiene escenas románticas y otras muy divertidas, la verdad es que no me pareció tan buena como para haberse convertido en un clásico romántico de los noventa. Pero bueno, es cuestión de gustos.
Finally, on the third night - because I watched these movies in a row - I turned to Netflix because I remembered that some friends had told me about a movie in which they had seen a character who, according to them, resembled me, not physically, but in the way he was and acted. Intrigued to know if they were right, I decided to watch a film whose existence I did not know: Before We Go, directed by Chris Evans and starring himself with Alice Eve.
Finalmente, la tercera noche - porque estas tres películas las vi en tres noches seguidas - acudí a Netflix porque recordé que unos amigos me habían hablado de una película en la que habían visto un personaje que, según ellos, se parecía a mí, no en lo físico, sino en su manera de ser y actuar. Intrigado por saber si tenían razón me dispuse a ver una cinta cuya existencia no conocía: Before We Go, dirigida por Chris Evans y protagonizada por él mismo junto a Alice Eve.
New York. Central Station. A woman named Brooke (Alice Eve) rushes to board the 1:30 a.m. train for Boston... but she's late. For personal reasons that will be revealed over the next 90 minutes, she must arrive in Boston by 7:00 am, but she has no money: her purse has been stolen. In the midst of her desperation, she's helped by a musician at the station named Nick (Chris Evans), who doesn't have enough money to pay for a cab to Boston, but begins to work out a solution with her. Little by little, Nick's honesty and warmth will break down Brooke's wall of caution, who in turn will show herself to be more vulnerable to him than she first appeared. In the same vein as romances like Before Sunrise, this film directed by Evans is the story of a night, of a long walk that allows the protagonists to get to know each other, judge each other, discover each other, find each other and fall in love. The thing is, Brooke is married and Nick is still tied to his last affair, so they are not free when they meet. However, they allow themselves to feel that attraction, that connection that arises between them, without crossing the boundaries of right. In that sense Before We Go is a more tender, more innocent movie than many others and although it may seem defeatist to find the love of your life and let him go because it's already with someone else, that's probably the noblest gesture of love that someone can have with the one she/he loves. Nueva York. Central Station. Una mujer llamada Brooke (Alice Eve) llega corriendo a abordar el tren de la 1:30 am hacia Boston... pero llega tarde. Por motivos personales que se irán revelando durante los siguientes 90 minutos, debe llegar a Boston antes de las 7:00 am, pero no tiene dinero: le han robado su bolso. En medio de su desesperación, recibe la ayuda de un músico que se encuentra en la estación llamado Nick (Chris Evans), quien no tiene dinero suficiente para pagarle un taxi hasta Boston, pero comienza a idear con ella una solución. Poco a poco, la honestidad y calidez de Nick irán derribando el muro de precaución de Brooke quien a su vez se irá mostrando con él más vulnerable de lo que aparentaba en un principio. En la misma onda de romances como Before Sunrise, esta película dirigida por Evans es la historia de una noche, de una larga caminata que les permite a los protagonistas conocerse, juzgarse, descubrirse, encontrarse y enamorarse. El tema es que Brooke está casada y Nick aún está atado a su último romance, por lo que no están libres al momento de conocerse. Sin embargo, se permiten sentir esa atracción, esa conexión que surge entre ellos, sin cruzar los límites de lo correcto. En ese sentido Before We Go es una película más tierna, más inocente que muchas otras y aunque puede parecer derrotista encontrar al amor de tu vida y dejarlo ir porque ya está con alguien más, probablemente sea el gesto de amor más noble que alguien puede tener con aquel a quien ama.
