Life just got harder ⛓
Comedy is something that is a huge part of my life. I am well known as a practical jokester and for having a wicked sense of humor. A lot of what shaped my sense of humor growing up came from movies and tv. I look towards the likes of Dave Chappelle and Eddie Murphy for inspiration in my nonstop endeavor to make myself and others laugh. Nutt Professor was something I watched countless times. Chappelle's Show is my favorite sketch comedy of all time. These two men alone are to blame for a lot of my crude jokes and I wouldn't change that for anything.
I'm not obsessed with Eddie Murphy, but I do consider him one of the greatest comedians of my lifetime. I have seen a lot of his stuff, but there is a lot that I haven't seen too. Today I want to talk about an older movie starring Eddie Murphy that I recently discovered. Somehow I had never seen this film, despite its famous "You gon' eat yo cornbread?" quote from the Goldmouth character.
The movie I wish to discuss today is called Life. You can find everything you need to know about the film on IMDb. If you just want to hear my thoughts on this hilarious adoption, continue reading here. I'll try to leave major spoilers out. Most of you have probably already watched this movie before anyways. If not, you are in for a treat just like I was a few nights back.
This movie is from 1999, I was only 7 years old when it came out. That probably explains why I missed it during the initial release. It does shock me that I didn't find out about it later down the road when I was going through the mischievous stages of middle and high school. Lucky for me, I got to watch Life for the first time once my sense of humor had fully matured. I was beyond ready for a comedy of this style, they just don't make them like this anymore.
As you can see below, the cast is absolutely stacked with comedic talent. Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence, Anthony Anderson, Bernie Mac, Bokeem Woodbine, and many more.
The thing about comedies these days is they've become far too soft. S.O.F.T! People are so easily offended that comedians are often afraid to unleash a real barrage of bigotry. I got addicted to this darker comedy when I was younger, I'm not happy with society trying to take it away. Lucky for me, Life breathed new life into my borderline unacceptable sense of humor. This movie made me laugh just like I remember doing this type of comedy when I was a young boy. I am so thankful that my parents weren't the restrictive type and let me discover what I enjoyed. That freedom is what enabled my sense of humor to blossom to the levels that it is today.
I'm so glad that I happened upon Life on Netflix last weekend. I even got @flowerbaby to watch it with me. She wasn't even born until 2000, so this film is older than she is! She didn't really grow up watching the type of comedy that I did, still, yet I caught her laughing out loud a few times. It made me happy to know that she had it in her to laugh at some of the terrible things in this movie.
Life is good 🙊
I'll close this one out by saying if you have not yet watched Life, do so ASAP! I would love to find more people with the same sense of humor as me. This movie will for certain either have you on my side or against me. If you can't find a way to laugh at even the most terrible of things, then you are going to be in for a constant struggle your entire life. Nothing is picture perfect and comedy gives horrible things the chance at becoming something positive. Don't sleep on this one.
