Marc-André Leclerc climbs alone, far from the limelight. The free-spirited 23-year-old makes some of the boldest solo ascents in history. With no cameras and no margin for error, Leclerc's approach is the essence of solo adventure. Source
This dude was crazy 🥶🗻🧗♂️
Let's start this off by admitting straight away that Marc-André Leclerc is an absolute legend. The things this guy and other free soloists attempt and succeed at are absolutely incredible. It is one thing to be a rock climber, another thing to be a free soloist, but there are not many ice climbing free soloists in this world. Leclerc was in a league of his own.
Some may try to compare Alex Honnold of the film Free Solo to Marc-André Leclerc, but they are not the exact same type of climber. Honnold can even be witnessed in The Alpinist as he describes how he normally climbs rock, while Marc-André also does rock but also goes after insanely difficult ice-covered mountains. This stuff just doesn't even seem possible, yet here we are with films like The Alpinist and Free Solo that prove these things do indeed occur.
While watching The Alpinist, I found out that Marc-André Leclerc was quite the weird dude. He lived with the only bare necessities and enjoyed the most simple things in life. He was happy camping in a tent with his girlfriend Brette and climbing the most intimidating things that the world had to offer. He wasn't one for bragging rights or fame, he did all of this because he was passionate and determined to succeed at the impossible. You have to respect this guy so much for his feats, even if he is awkward on camera and doesn't seem to understand the concept of a haircut.
I loved the style of film that Free Solo offered, lots of close-up climbing action from insane heights, mixed with some commentary, interviews, and vlog-like moments. It worked very well and The Alpinist is more of that same style of the film. One of the main differences here is that Marc-André is highly elusive and doesn't like being on camera. Alex Honnold was more than happy to be the star of the show, which honestly made him seem pretty obnoxious at times. Both dudes are superhumans, but their personalities were quite a bit different, with a few similarities here and there as well.
The Alpinist is one of those epic films that many will just ignore because it is not something they would normally watch, but trust me when I say you do not want to miss this one. You will be mind blown by these beautiful landscapes and how Marc-André Leclerc is able to make deadly climbs look like child's play. I really loved this one a lot.
I highly advise that you check out the trailer for this to get an idea of what to expect. Truly, the only way to fully understand just how great The Alpinist and Marc-André Leclerc are is to watch it all yourself some time.
