This isn't the first animated series from the dark fantasy genre I have watched. In the past couple of years, I watched the Castlevania series from Netflix, which is mostly about vampires, including Dracula, and other creatures from the night.
In Trese, we will also see a varied list of paranormal creatures mixed with some elements of Philippine folklore and mythology. I am not sure if there is going to be a second season or not, but what I can say is that even though the series was cool, it wasn't as good as Castlevania.
Main names associated with the series
Since this is a Philippine, the people who worked in the series are completely unknown to me. However, I believe it is fair to briefly mention them so let's begin with the directors. The series only has 6 episodes directed by 4 different individuals.
David Hartman is the director with the most experience of the 4. In recent years he has worked in a couple of animated Transformers series and he has been an active director since the year 2000, so he has more than 20 years of experience so far.
Jay Oliva also directed 2 episodes of the series, and most of his previous experience as a director comes from working with DC animated films. He has worked in Justice League animated films, in several Batman films, and he even worked in a few Marvel animated films in the late 2000s.
The remaining 2 directors have very little experience and they only directed 1 episode each. Tim Divar is a person with extensive experience in the animation department but as a director, he has only worked in 3 productions so far, including Trese. The other 2 are one Scooby-Doo movie and a series from the early 2010s called Young Justice.
The last director is Melchior Zwyer who just like Tim, has a lot of experience in the animation department but the same cannot be said about his experience as a director. He also directed a different Scooby-Doo movie, and worked in a Star Wars animated series, in a DC animated film, and in the series Young Justice just like Tim Divar.

In summary, the series has some directors with proper experience and others whose experience is mostly in the animation department. The writing department, on the other hand, has people with very little experience and no previous story that can be considered a global success.
Knowing this, the big question is if the series is worth watching or not? Let's answer that in the next section of the post.
What was the series about?
The series follows the activities of the main character, Alexandra Trese, as she does everything she can to keep the balance between the paranormal world and the normal human civilization in check. She is a person with a lot of hidden knowledge thanks to all the teachings she received from her parents.
This character can be considered a sort of guardian who makes sure humanity is not damaged or put in danger by malevolent forces that are out of this world. For people who enjoyed everything related to dark fantasy and night creatures, this series will certainly be super enjoyable. There are all sorts of originally designed characters that take an active part in the episodes and are a delight to watch. There are ghosts, vampires, werewolves, demons, and even creatures that I have never seen before.
At the beginning of each episode, we see some flashbacks which will provide important background info that will help us understand and relate to some of the characters on the screen, especially the main one of course. The supernatural realm is not something that's really hidden in the series, Trese will be constantly working with the police department to help solve all types of crimes and mysteries that always have a paranormal element related to them, and it isn't like the police act all surprised every time they encounter something paranormal. They are clearly used to this.
Trese has a lot of contacts in the underground world, and this will help her find the necessary information to realize what's happening and solve all the problems that will arise throughout the show. Each episode provides the viewer with a new case, and in the end, there is a big surprise that reveals the real force behind the recent troublesome events.
The best part about the show was seeing so much creativity in designing original paranormal creatures. Only this is already good enough to justify given the series a watch, but there is a lot of room for improvement in other areas though.
En resumen, la serie cuenta con algunos directores con la experiencia adecuada y otros cuya experiencia se encuentra mayoritariamente en el departamento de animación. El departamento de redacción, en cambio, cuenta con personas con muy poca experiencia y sin historias previas que pueda considerarse un éxito global.
Sabiendo esto, la gran pregunta es si vale la pena ver la serie o no. Respondamos eso en la siguiente sección del post.
¿De qué trataba la serie?
La serie sigue las actividades del personaje principal, Alexandra Trese, mientras hace todo lo posible para mantener el equilibrio entre el mundo paranormal y la civilización humana normal bajo control. Es una persona con mucho conocimiento oculto gracias a todas las enseñanzas que recibió de sus padres.
Este personaje puede considerarse una especie de guardián que se asegura de que la humanidad no sea dañada o puesta en peligro por fuerzas malévolas que están fuera de este mundo. Para las personas que disfrutan de todo lo relacionado con la fantasía oscura y las criaturas nocturnas, esta serie sin duda será muy entretenida. Hay todo tipo de personajes diseñados originalmente que toman parte activa en los episodios y es un placer verlos. Hay fantasmas, vampiros, hombres lobo, demonios e incluso criaturas que nunca antes había visto.
Al comienzo de cada episodio, vemos algunos flashbacks que proporcionarán información de fondo importante que nos ayudará a comprender y relacionarnos con algunos de los personajes de la pantalla, especialmente el principal. El reino sobrenatural no es algo que esté realmente oculto en la serie, Trese trabajará constantemente con el departamento de policía para ayudar a resolver todo tipo de crímenes y misterios que siempre tienen un elemento paranormal relacionado con ellos, y los policías no se sorprenden cada vez que se encuentran con algo paranormal. Están claramente acostumbrados a esto.
Trese tiene muchos contactos en el mundo underground, y esto la ayudará a encontrar la información necesaria para darse cuenta de lo que está sucediendo y resolver todos los problemas que surgirán a lo largo del show. La mejor parte de la serie fue ver tanta creatividad en el diseño de criaturas paranormales originales. Solo esto ya es lo suficientemente bueno como para justificar darle un vistazo a la serie pero hay mucho margen de mejora en otras áreas.
The plot could have been better developed. There are important groups of characters that get very limited time on the screen, and the story simply rushes through all of that in order to reach the climax as quickly as possible. I believe there was enough potential to take more time and properly explore this world and especially the different paranormal beings that exist within it. I believe having 10 episodes or at least 8 instead of 6 would have helped the series.
The show isn't intense enough in the key moments when everything seems to be going straight to hell. There was a key moment in the last episode when a long monologue made everything so boring and I was really expecting that episode to have tons of crazy action. It is possible to reveal secrets in a very intense and emotional way in animated productions, but this series wasn't able to achieve that. Everytime a new piece of information is revealed, it didn't have the impact it should have had.
The ending leaves the possibility of a new season and I really hope they produce one because it will hopefully provide more information about this promising world where our civilization coexists with the paranormal realm. Plus, this will give the show creators more time to fix some of the shortcomings of the first season.
How was the quality of the animation and the writing of the story?
The quality of the animation was nice. It was similar to some of the DC animated films I have seen in recent times, and it was no surprise to see some of the directors also worked in DC films. As mentioned before, one of the best things about the series is all the creativity in the design of the paranormal creatures, I really enjoyed that. The city landscapes also looked beautiful.
The story had potential, but the way it was told could have been better. This world offers enough characters and possibilities to have amazing stories and the way some important events took place left much to be desired. If they manage to improve this I believe Trese could have a bright future ahead.
Final thoughts
The show is worth watching but it cannot be considered a must-watch animated production unless you are a big fan of the dark fantasy subgenre, and in that case, have in mind Castlevania is a better show. I do believe this show can improve if they decide to release a new season, and figure out how to do important revelations in an intense and maybe even emotional way.
All in all, I consider this to be an acceptable series, it provides sufficient entertainment, and since it has room for improvement, I hope they do another season so the creators can have another chance of improving the general quality of this production.
La trama podría haberse desarrollado mejor. Hay grupos importantes de personajes que tienen un tiempo muy limitado en la pantalla, y la historia simplemente pasa por todo eso para alcanzar el clímax lo más rápido posible. Creo que había suficiente potencial para tomarse más tiempo y explorar adecuadamente este mundo y especialmente los diferentes seres paranormales que existen dentro de él. El show no es lo suficientemente intenso en los momentos clave cuando todo parece irse directo al infierno. Hubo un momento clave en el último episodio cuando un largo monólogo hizo que todo fuera muy aburrido y realmente esperaba que ese episodio tuviera mucha acción loca. Es posible revelar secretos de una manera muy intensa y emotiva en producciones animadas, pero esta serie no pudo lograrlo. Cada vez que se revela una nueva información, no tiene el impacto que debería haber tenido.
El final deja la posibilidad de una nueva temporada y realmente espero que produzcan una porque con suerte proporcionará más información sobre este mundo prometedor donde nuestra civilización coexiste con el reino paranormal. Además, esto les dará a los creadores del programa más tiempo para corregir algunas de las deficiencias de la primera temporada.
¿Cómo fue la calidad de la animación y la redacción de la historia?
La calidad de la animación fue buena. Era similar a algunas de las películas animadas de DC que he visto en los últimos tiempos, y no fue una sorpresa ver que algunos de los directores también trabajaban en películas de DC. Como se mencionó anteriormente, una de las mejores cosas de la serie es toda la creatividad en el diseño de las criaturas paranormales, realmente lo disfruté. Los paisajes de la ciudad también se veían hermosos.
La historia tiene potencial, pero la forma en que fue contada podría haber sido mejor. Este mundo ofrece suficientes personajes y posibilidades para tener historias asombrosas y la forma en que ocurrieron algunos eventos importantes dejó mucho que desear. Si logran mejorar esto, creo que Trese podría tener un futuro brillante por delante.
Reflexiones finales
Vale la pena ver la serie, pero no puede considerarse una producción animada imprescindible a menos que seas un gran fanático del subgénero de fantasía oscura y, en ese caso, ten en cuenta que Castlevania es mejor. Creo que este programa puede mejorar si deciden lanzar una nueva temporada y descubren cómo hacer revelaciones importantes de una manera intensa y tal vez incluso emocional.
Con todo, considero que esta es una serie aceptable, ofrece suficiente entretenimiento y, como tiene margen de mejora, espero que hagan otra temporada para que los creadores tengan otra oportunidad de mejorar la calidad general de esta producción.
