I have known about this movie for several weeks but it was last night when I finally decided to watch it. It is the story of a woman who suddenly decides to start swallowing all types of objects that could easily damage her health and even kill her.
She seems to be living a perfect life, he has a successful husband and they live in a nice house with no kids but that's no problem because they are still very young. In the first minutes, we already see that some things could be making her uncomfortable such as her husband being very busy with his work and not paying her enough attention at dinner, and her being interrupted by her husband's father when she was telling a story in a family meeting.
I suppose this type of interaction started to damage her self esteem and might have been the trigger that caused her unhealthy habit of ingesting weird objects. As expected, she cannot hide this fact forever and her family eventually discovers her secret.
This is a drama movie that explores this very weird sickness where people have an uncontrollable urge to eat strange stuff. I have read about real-life cases of people who do this, some of them eat glass, others eat bricks among many other unhealthy objects. This disorder is called Pica and it is defined as "a psychological disorder characterized by an appetite for substances that are largely non-nutritive". Source. I guess there must be people who have died as a result of having this disorder and eating something that kills them.
In the movie, we will learn about the potential causes behind this woman's sickness and her personal drama from her past that is still affecting her even today. She is a good person but she has some internal issues she needs to solve and she is aware of this. The imbalance of power she has with her husband and his wealthy family is also a destabilizing factor in her life, despite the fact she is well treated. Except, of course, on the occasions where she was kind of ignored by her husband and then in another day interrupted by her father in life. I believe that made her feel belittled.
If you are in the mood for an interesting and well-done drama about a weird disorder then Swallow is a worth watching film. It kept me entertaining for the duration of the movie, and I felt everything about the film was properly done. It is not a mind-blowing or spectacular film though, it is just a good little drama flick.
The best
- Good performance from the lead actress.
- Entertaining drama film with a slightly intense ending.
The worst
- An impossible coincidence in one key part of the plot where her visit coincides with a birthday.
