And without winning, neither the actors, actresses, technical team, screenwriters or directors, absolutely nothing at a professional level. Well, that is precisely what we are about to find out. Since, seen from the general perspective of the public, which simply has no influence on the voting or the criteria of the academy (Emmys Awards), it is striking how they have deliberately forgotten this piece of art that was and still is "Better Call Saul", by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould.
47 nominaciones, durante 7 años seguidos, desde la primera temporada debut, que para aquellos que no lo sepan; se estrenó en el año 2015... Y sin ganar, ni los actores, actrices, equipo técnico, guionistas o directores, absolutamente nada a nivel profesional ¿Por qué? Pues, precisamente éso es lo que estamos a punto de averiguar. Puesto, que visto desde la perspectiva general del público, que sencillamente no tiene influencia en el voto o el criterio de la academia (Emmys Awards), pues llama la atención cómo se han olvidado deliberadamente de esta pedazo de obra de arte que fue y aún sigue siendo "Better Call Saul", de Vince Gilligan y Peter Gould.
Now, "Breaking Bad", the main story from which the character of Saul Goodman is derived, which was also conceived, created, written and even directed by Gilligan and Gould, not only won multiple Emmys, but in its final season (remember that this series has 5 seasons) was where it swept the most. Taking home more statuettes than in all the past seasons where it also emerged victorious. So, with this background, my question is, what is the Academy's criteria for "forgetting" "Better Call Saul" the way they did? I mean, it can't be that we're all absolutely wrong, and even Rotten Tomatoes or any specialised review agency, also has a clouded judgement?
And the thing is, if you look for specialized reviews, you'll find that "Better Call Saul" is even better positioned than the series from which it originates ("Breaking Bad"). Weeks after the premiere of the 6th and final season of BCS, the public debate was even "Is Better Call Saul better than Breaking Bad? To such an extent has this series come to be valued, positively, that it seems absurd that on a professional level it is not recognised in any way? No matter how you look at it, the obscenity of having systematically left this fictional, prequel and visionary masterpiece behind is simply insane by any measure...
Ahora bien, "Breaking Bad", la historia principal de donde se deriva el personaje de Saul Goodman, que también fue pensada, creada, escrita y hasta dirigida por Gilligan y Gould, no solo ganó múltiples Emmys, sino que en su temporada final (recordemos que esta serie cuenta con 5 temporadas) fue donde más arrasó. Llevándose más estatuillas que en todas las temporadas pasadas donde también surgió victoriosa. Entonces, con estos antecedentes, mi pregunta es, ¿cuál es el criterio de la Academia para "olvidarse" de ese modo de "Better Call Saul" del modo en que lo hicieron? Digo, no puede ser que todos estemos absolutamente equivocados,, e incluso Rotten Tomatoes o cualquier agencia de crítica especializada, también tenga el juicio nublado...
Y es que, si buscas críticas especializada, hallarás que "Better Call Saul" está incluso mejor posicionada que la serie de donde se origina ("Breaking Bad"). Incluso, semanas después del estreno de la 6ta y última temporada de BCS, el debate público era "¿Es Better Call Saul mejor que Breaking Bad? A tal punto ha llegado a ser valorada, positivamente, esta serie que parece absurdo que a nivel profesional no sea reconocida de ninguna manera... Y es que sin importar por dónde se analice, sencillamente la obscenidad de haber dejado, sistemáticamente a esta obra maestra,de ficción, precuela y visionaria es una locura véase por donde se vea...
By this, I don't mean to use the classic "sore loser" sentence where demerit is given to the other series that did win awards. Like, for example: Euphoria (from HBO) or "The Squid Game", "Succession"; even: Ozark (from Netflix). However, to fail to recognise the virtues of the wit in this series across the board is completely insane in my view. I have read reviews and analyses that state that Better Call Saul was never recognised because it is simply too dense and slow-paced a story, while those that did win awards were stories that corresponded to strong emotions, special effects and a drama with "better resolution per episode". This, in my view, is nothing but an unpresentable fallacy.
Con esto, no quiero emplear la clásica oración de "mal perdedor" donde se hace demérito a las demás series que sí resultaron galardonadas. Como, por ejemplo: Euphoria (De la HBO) o "El Juego del Calamar", "Succession"; incluso: Ozark (de Netflix). No obstante, no reconocer a todos rasgos las virtudes del ingenio que hay en esta serie, es completamente demencial desde mi punto de vista. He leído, críticas y análisis que plantean que Better Call Saul, jamás fue reconocida porque sencillamente es una historia demasiado densa y con ritmo pausado, mientras que aquellas que sí resultaron laureadas eran historias que correspondían con las emociones fuertes, efectos especiales y un drama con "mejor resolución por episodio". Esto, desde mi óptica, no es otra cosa que una falacia impresentable.
You see, my amazement is so gigantic, that even from a cinematic point of view, it's insane what they have done to Better Call Saul since 2015, until the last Emmy Awards in 2022, where not only did the nominations for the series, and therefore the team that made it possible, diminish; among them, of course, Bob OdenKirk and Rhea Seehorn, who play Jimmy McGill (future Saul Goodman) and Kim Wexler, respectively. The shots used by Vince Gilligan, the soundtrack, the extreme power of detail that the series has and the fidelity to the prequel's era setting are just some of the details that seem to go overlooked...
Also, let's face it, comparing Better Call Saul to The Squid Game? Are you serious? Obviously, both stories go down different paths, but if, like the Oscars, the Emmys, prioritise dramatic stories over any other genre of film or series, could someone explain to me what the criteria for choosing this time was or were? Simply put, there will always be things that I will never be able to understand and internalise. Needless to say, just as it has happened to the Sex Pistols or Iron Maiden, within rock and roll, I guess Better Call Saul will also have to deal with the lack of official recognition but it will definitely always have a standing ovation from the audience, from those people who not only love excellent stories but true art made series.
Verán, es que mi asombro es tan gigantesco, que hasta desde el punto de vista cinematográfico, es una locura lo que le han hecho a Better Call Saul desde el 2015, hasta la última entrega de los Premios Emmy en 2022, donde no solo disminuyeron las nominaciones a la serie, y por tanto al equipo que la hizo posible; entre ellos, por supuesto Bob OdenKirk y Rhea Seehorn, que encarnan a Jimmy McGill (futuro Saul Goodman) y Kim Wexler, respectivamente. Los planos empleados por Vince Gilligan, el soundtrack, el poder extremo del detalle que tiene la serie y la fidelidad con el ambiente de la era donde está ubicada la precuela, son tan solo algunos de los detalles que parecen pasar por alto...
Además, seamos francos, ¿comparar a Better Call Saul con el Juego del Calamar? ¿Es en serio? Obviamente, ambas historias van por caminos distintos, pero si al igual que los Oscars, los Emmys, priorizan las historias dramáticas sobre cualquier otro género del cine o series, ¿alguien podría explicarme cuál o cuáles fueron los criterios de elección esta vez? Sencillamente, siempre habrá cosas que jamás podré comprender e internalizar. Sobra decir, que al igual que les ha sucedido a los Sex Pistols o a Iron Maiden, dentro del rock and roll, supongo que a Better Call Saul también tendrá que lidiar con la falta de reconocimiento oficial pero definitivamente siempre tendrá una ovación de pie del público, de aquellas personas que no solo aman las excelente historias sino el verdadero arte hecho serie.
This must be a record, quite an "eye-catching" one, I'll be honest... Stranger Things, Game of Thrones, even Insecure, series that haven't exactly enjoyed critical acclaim, have been appropriately and deservedly awarded when the occasion arose, but not Better Call Saul? This, clearly, is not only a monumental injustice but also leaves the very artistic and analytical criteria of the Emmy Awards in a bad light, where for more than 7 years stories were prioritised that, compared to the plot and scripting power of BCS, simply could not be compared. Yet none of this really mattered and what we have all seen ended up happening.
Esto debe ser un récord, bastante "llamativo", les seré honesto... Stranger Things, Game of Thrones, incluso Insecure, series que no han gozado precisamente del beneplácito de la crítica, han sido adecuada y merecidamente galardonadas cuando así hubo la ocasión, pero no Better Call Saul... Esto, claramente no solo es una injusticia monumental sino que deja mal parada al propio criterio artístico y analítico de los Premios Emmy, donde se priorizó durante más de 7 años historias que comparativamente con el argumento y el poder de guión que tuvo BCS, sencillamente no podían ser comparadas. Aún así, nada de esto realmente importó y terminó sucediendo lo que todos ya hemos visto.
A curious fact is that the actor who played "Saul Goodman" himself, when questioned (by reporters) on the red carpet of the celebration about his nomination for possible "Best Actor", simply responded with a tired and noticeably sad gesture that the fact that he was already nominated was a "luxury". Praising Brian Cox's performance in Succession, and redirecting the "praise" to his co-star on the show, Rhea Seehorn and the fantastic role she had played as Kim Wexler over the years but especially in the series finale in its 6th and final season. Finally, I must confess that I'm not one to make this kind of statements or convey my frustrations, caused by the injustices and poor judgment that is publicly held for a particular film or series, but researching to make this post, I simply collapsed and could not contain my disappointment and above all the feeling of frustration and indignation, for what to my eyes seems like a total bias towards the kind of drama/comedy that Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould did for years (and really well). I'm probably not alone in this feeling and many of you may agree (or not) with what I've written, but the sun cannot be covered with a finger, ever. And sometimes, what is recognised and applauded does not reflect what has been objectively better.
Un dato curioso, es que el propio actor que encarnó a "Saul Goodman", al ser cuestionado (por reporteros), en plena alfombra roja de la celebración sobre su nominación a posible "Mejor Actor", sencillamente respondió con gesto cansino y notablemente triste que el hecho de estar ya nominado era un "lujo". Elogiando la actuación de Brian Cox en Succession, y redirigiendo los "halagos" hacia su co estrella en el show, Rhea Seehorn y el fantástico papel que había desempeñado como Kim Wexler a lo largo de los años pero especialmente en el cierre de la serie en su 6ta y definitiva temporada. Finalmente, debo confesar que no soy de hacer este tipo de declaraciones o transmitir mis frustraciones, ocasionadas por las injusticias y pobre criterio que públicamente se tenga por determinada película o serie, pero investigando para hacer este post, sencillamente colapsé y no pude contener mi decepción y sobre todo el sentimiento de frustración e indignación, por lo que a mis ojos parece un sesgo total hacia el tipo de drama/comedia que hicieron por años (y realmente bien) Vince Gilligan y Peter Gould Probablemente, no esté solo en este sentimiento y muchos de ustedes estén de acuerdo (o no) con lo que he escrito, pero el sol no puede taparse con un dedo, jamás. Y a veces, lo que se reconoce y aplaude no refleja lo que ha sido mejor con objetividad.
