When we watch teen series today, whatever the production company or distributor behind them, each and every one of them has something that was seen for the first time, in Skins. You may or may not believe it, but here I will leave you with a series of reflections that support what I am trying to explain with this post. Now, many people reading this today may not remember well the series made and broadcast by Channel 4, Bristol, England, but Skins was the series that introduced several prerogatives into the "Teens" genre: homosexuality, gender, drugs in adolescence, abandonment of the home, child abuse, psychological trauma and exacerbated sexuality. While there were many, many series that touched on some of these issues, none developed them realistically.
Cuando hoy vemos series de adolescentes, sea cual sea la productora o la distribuidora que las respalde, todas y cada una de ellas tienen algo que se vio por primera vez, en Skins. Pueden o no creerlo, pero aquí les dejaré una serie de reflexiones que dan respaldo a lo que intento explicar con este post. Ahora bien, quizás muchas personas que hoy están leyendo esto no recuerden bien la serie hecha y emitida por Channel 4, de Bristol, Inglaterra pero Skins fue la serie que introdujo en el género "Teens" varias prerrogativas: homosexualidad, género, drogas en la adolescencia, abandono del hogar, abusos infantiles, traumas psicológicos y sexualidad exacerbada. Si bien, existieron muchísimas series que tocaron algunos de estos temas, ninguna lo desarrolló con realismo.
And for me, that is the key to Skins' success. From the very name of the series, you start to get a sense of what the plot is about. And it wouldn't be unconscionable or delusional to build on that. The first episode sets the pace and style of the production's storytelling. By segmenting each episode with the name, and therefore, with the vision of each protagonist of the series. It is worth noting that Skins is a series worthy of its historical context and the era in which it was made. Social networks do not have as big and existential an impact as we see in Euphoria, to give just one example. But there are correlations in terms of what it is like to be a teenager starting to live a life and to know the bitterness and responsibility of one's actions, as well as the unbridled optics of the twenties...
In this sense, as the writer of this post, and as a member of a generation that lived exactly the same things that we can appreciate in Skins, I can tell you that in terms of casting, they hit the mark. It seems like a no-brainer, but many of the shows we've been watching for years don't cast actors who are the age they're supposed to be playing. This leads to a disconnect between the audience watching the story and the plot they are trying to convey during the story. On another note, I would like to highlight the value of first impressions (and how wrong they are, more often than not).
Y para mí, esa es la clave del éxito de Skins. Desde el mismísimo nombre de la serie, se empieza a percibir de qué va el argumento. Y no sería desmedido o ilusorio basarse en eso. Ya que en el primer episodio se marca el ritmo y el estilo del storytelling de la producción. Al segmentar cada capítulo con el nombre, y por tanto, con la visión de cada protagonista de la serie. Cabe destacar, que Skins es una serie digna de su contexto histórico y de la época en la que se realizó. Las redes sociales no tienen un impacto tan grande y existencial como sí lo vemos en Euphoria, por dar sólo un ejemplo. Pero sí existen correlaciones en cuanto a qué es ser un adolescente que empieza a vivir una vida y conocer la amargura y la responsabilidad de sus actos, así como la óptica desenfrenada de los diecitantos...
En este sentido, como redactor de este post, y como miembro perteneciente de una generación que vivió exactamente las mismas cosas que podemos apreciar en Skins, puedo decirles que en cuanto a la selección del casting, dieron en el blanco. Parecería una obviedad, pero muchas de las series que vemos desde hace años no emplean a actores que tengan la edad que se supone que interpretan. Eso hace que haya una desconexión entre la audiencia que presencia la historia y el argumento que intenta transmitir durante la historia. En otro orden de ideas, destacaré el valor que tiene las primeras impresiones (y lo equivocadas que suelen ser, casi siempre).
There is a very strong focus on personality masks. That idea within psychology where an idea is projected for the whole public but where the true essence or being is left for certain people and moments. Something that, once again, is a total success on the part of the creators of Skins. Because this element is key to empathising and being able to understand the character of each individual in the series. Moreover, it is a series that has a pioneering point that I can't fail to mention. I have never seen a series for teenagers, which is also a solid drama, that every two seasons decides to radically change all its characters, and yet continues to be successful. That's an incredible gamble and one that worked out beautifully for them.
Hay un enfoque muy fuerte en lo que son las máscaras de la personalidad. Esa idea dentro de la psicología donde se proyecta un idea para todo el público pero donde la verdadera esencia o ser, se deja para ciertas personas y momentos. Algo que, de nuevo, es un acierto total por parte de los creadores de Skins. Porque ése elemento es clave para empatizar y poder entender el carácter de cada individuo dentro de la serie. Además, es una serie que tiene un punto pionero que yo no puedo dejar de mencionar. Nunca vi una serie para adolescentes, que es también un drama sólido, que cada dos temporadas decide cambiar radicalmente a todos sus personajes, y que aún así continúa siendo exitosa. Eso es una apuesta increíble y que les salió de maravilla.
I think they decided to do it this way in order to maintain fidelity between the ages of the actors and the type of story that is told within the main characters' story arcs. It's a delight to see how the stories of "Effy", "Thomas", "Cassie", "Tony", "Cock" and "Sid" take on a force rarely seen for a programme that, in principle, didn't have much of a budget. I always make the parallel between how well HBO has taken the idea of developing Euphoria (and it's turned out amazing in terms of subscriptions and viewership) and what Skins would have been like with something similar. Nonetheless, from the first season in 2007 to the last, split into three stories for television in film format in 2013, Skins has been a landmark, a pioneer for a generation crying out for something more real and empathetic and welcoming to see real problems of a troubled stage of human life reflected.
Skins is critically acclaimed for being a series that is totally irreverent but without shedding the sense of reality on which it places so much emphasis. Something that was and will always be the flag, the premise and the soul of this series that marked us all. I believe that within the HIVE community, there will be people who share my point of view, even if only a little. In Latin America, it was broadcast on MTV and from there it was an important commercial and generational boom. Currently, it can be enjoyed in its entirety on the Netflix platform. I rate it as one of the best in its genre. And although I prefer not to be a judge of anything, I think I feel comfortable rating it as an outstanding 8.5 out of a possible 10 points.
Pienso que lo decidieron así para mantener la fidelidad entre las edades de los actores y el tipo de historia que se cuenta dentro de los arcos argumentales de los protagonistas. Y es que, es un deleite ver como historias como la de "Effy", "Thomas", "Cassie", "Tony", "Cock" y "Sid" cogen una fuerza pocas veces visto para un programa, que en principio, mucho presupuesto no tuvo. Siempre hago el paralelismo entre lo bien que se ha tomado la HBO la idea de desarrollar a Euphoria (y que les ha salido increíble en cuanto a suscripciones y audiencia) y lo que hubiese sido Skins con algo similar. No obstante, desde la primera temporada en 2007 hasta la última, divididas en tres historias para televisión en formato cine, en 2013, Skins ha sido un marco referencial, pionera de una generación que clamaba por algo más real y empático y acogedora para poder ver reflejados problemas reales de una etapa conflictiva de la vida humana.
Skins es aclamada por la crítica por ser una serie que comulga con la irreverencia total pero sin desprenderse del sentido de la realidad en la que tanto énfasis hace. Algo que fue y será siempre la bandera, la premisa y el alma de esta serie que nos marcó a todos. Creo que dentro de esta comunidad en HIVE, habrá personas que compartan, así sea un poco mi punto de vista. En Latinoamérica, fue transmitida por MTV y desde allí fue un boom comercial y generacional importante. Actualmente, se puede disfrutar entera dentro de la plataforma Netflix. Yo la valoro como una de las mejores dentro de su género. Y aunque prefiero no ser juez de nada, creo que me siento cómodo calificándola como un destacado 8.5 sobre 10 puntos posibles.
