Ridley Scott is known as a director who loves space and the science fiction and action plots that take place there. One of his most emblematic films, such as "Alien", and all its subsequent sagas, can never be forgotten. However, in 2015, he brought out "The Martian", a film whose premise was the future journeys that NASA will undertake to the red planet (Mars) within this same decade (the 20's of the 21st century). In it, the protagonist arrives on the arid desert planet and, after an inadvertent sandstorm, is isolated and trapped by his crew, who, surprise surprise, seeing the complicated mission, decide to leave the planet and leave Damon, presuming him to be dead. This is where the magic of this monumental film begins.
Let's remember the context and the time in which this wonderful story emerged in cinemas. In 2014, Interstellar was an unprecedented success at the box office, in widespread critical acclaim but most of all in audience acceptance. The feature film directed and written by Christopher Nolan had complex concepts of science and especially theoretical physics and cosmology, which resonated very well with the standard understanding of the people who saw it. Interestingly, Matt Damon was also cast as a supporting actor in that film, and it was very well received. Less than a year later, The Martian was presented at the various film festivals and the same thing happened as with Interstellar, the critics loved it.
Ridley Scott es conocido como un director que ama el espacio y las tramas de ciencia ficción y acción que allí ocurren. Jamás podrá ser olvidada una de sus cintas más emblemáticas, como lo es "Alien", y todas sus consecuentes sagas. Sin embargo, en 2015, sacó adelante "The Martian", un filme que tenía como premisa a los futuros viajes que emprenderá la NASA hacia el planeta rojo (Marte) dentro de esta misma década (la de los años 20's del siglo XXI). En ella, el protagonista, llega al planeta árido y desértico y tras una inadvertida tormenta de arena, queda aislado y atrapado de su tripulación; que, ¡oh sorpresa!, al ver la misión complicada, decide partir del planera, y dejar a Damon al presumirle como muerto. Aquí es donde empieza la magia de esta monumental película.
Recordemos el contexto y la época en la que esta maravillosa historia surgió en los cines. En 2014, Interstellar tuvo un éxito sin precedentes en las taquillas, en la crítica generalizada pero sobre todo en la aceptación del público. El largometraje dirigido y escrito por Christopher Nolan tenía complejos conceptos de ciencia y sobre todo de física teórica y cosmología, que calaron muy bien en la comprensión estándar de las personas que la vieron. Curiosamente, Matt Damo, participó también como actor de reparto dentro del cast de ese film, y tuvo una recepción inmejorable. Menos de un año después, The Martian era presentada en los distintos festivales de cine y ocurrió lo mismo que con Interstellar, la crítica la amó.
In addition, there was a novelty that many overlooked. Perhaps due to a certain lack of knowledge or not being aware of NASA and ESA's plans to not only return to the moon but also to begin interplanetary travel: Mars has always been an obsession of mankind. That said, not everything in the plot of The Martian is fiction. There are elements that are tied to partial truth. Such as the physical and technological concepts that make the round trip from Earth to the red planet possible and also the project that in less than a decade will have the mission to put a human being on the Martian surface.
Además, había una novedad que muchos pasaron de largo. Quizá por cierto desconocimiento o por no estar al tanto de los planes que ha tenido la NASA y la ESA para no sólo volver a la Luna sino para dar comienzo a los viajes interplanetarios: Marte, es una obsesión de la humanidad desde siempre. Dicho esto, no todo en la trama de The Martian es ficción. Hay elementos que están ligados a la verdad parcial. Como los conceptos físicos y tecnológicos que hacen posible el viaje ida y vuelta desde la Tierra hasta el planeta rojo y también el proyecto que en menos de una década tendrá la misión de poner a un ser humano sobre la superficie marciana.
What's the film about? Well, a group of explorers, led by Jessica Chastain, are on a mission of reconnaissance and collection of Martian elements, to assemble the first human settlements inside Mars. Everything seems to be going as usual. They descend from the mothership to the surface. They set up the mobile laboratories, check the rocket facilities that had previously been launched to them, take samples of Martian soil and continue their mission without a hitch. However, this is a Ridley Scott film, clearly there has to be an incident that changes everything. And so it happens, a sandstorm that arises unexpectedly, complicating the crew's visibility and communication...
Within the disaster, there is the biologist and university professor, who is played by Damon. His character wanders away from the rest of the mission members, hits a Martian rock and is knocked completely unconscious. This curious accidental situation causes the crew leader to opt for the lesser evil and they begin to retreat and return to the ship that awaits them in orbit. Once there, all but Damon's character decide to follow the protocol for their return home. First, they have the obligation to inform the authorities in Houston about the possible death of one of their members who was unfortunately left on Mars.
¿De qué trata la película? Bueno, un grupo de exploradores, liderados por Jessica Chastain, está en una misión de reconocimientos y recolección de elementos marcianos, para dejar ensamblados los primeros asentamientos humanos dentro de Marte. Todo parece ir saliendo como de costumbre. Descienden desde la nave madre hasta la superficie. Arman los laboratorios móviles, chequean las instalaciones de los cohetes que habían sido lanzados previamente a ellos, cogen muestras de suelo marciano y continúan con su misión sin inconvenientes. No obstante, es una peli de Ridley Scott, claramente tiene que haber un incidente que lo cambie todo. Así sucede, una tormenta de arena que surge de imprevisto, complica la visibilidad y la comunicación de la tripulación...
Dentro del desastre, está el biólogo y profesor universitario, que es encarnado por Damon. Su personaje se aleja del resto de los miembros de la misión, se golpea con una roca marciana y queda completamente inconsciente. Esta curiosa situación accidentada hace que la líder de la tripulación se decante por el mal menor y comienzan a retirarse y retornar a la nave que los espera en órbita. Una vez allí todo, menos el personaje de Damon, deciden seguir el protocolo de vuelta a casa. Antes, tienen la obligación de informar a las autoridades en Houston, sobre el posible deceso de uno de sus miembros que infortunadamente quedó en Marte.
Burdened with guilt, and above all a sense of emptiness and failure, they begin the six-month journey home from the vicinity of the red planet. What they don't know is that Damon is not dead. On the contrary, the communication equipment he had, together with his suit, is damaged, but the alarm of the oxygen system keeps ringing and this awakens the astronaut from his lethargy, who, confused and moved by the survival instinct, is not aware that he is completely alone on Mars. As best he can, he "runs" and heads for the laboratory facilities that had been set up since the crew's descent and which are fully operational and without a scratch from the previous storm damage.
Cargados de culpa, y sobre todo de una sensación de vacío y fracaso, comienzan el retorno de más de 6 meses desde las proximidades del planeta rojo hacia casa. Lo que no saben, es que Damon no ha muerto. Todo lo contrario, El equipo de comunicación que poseía, junto a traje, están dañados pero la alarma del sistema de oxígeno no para de sonar y eso despierta del letargo al astronauta que confundido y movido por el instinto de supervivencia no es consciente de que está completamente sólo en Marte. Como puede, "corre" y se dirige a las instalaciones del laboratorio que habían armado desde el descenso de la tripulación y que está completamente operativo y sin un rasguño por el daño previo de la tormenta.
And so much for the story of the plot of incidents that make up the understanding of this film. The idea is that you see it and, above all, that you notice that within the plot of this film, the most recurrent idea is to know how to solve problems. It doesn't matter if it's on Mars, all alone, or in your own backyard. The key is to be able to implement simple and useful solutions to seemingly complicated and difficult problems. That said, I ask that as an audience, if you choose to watch this film, you pay attention to the details about politics, science, evolution, problem solving, engineering, clinical psychology, and above all, logical and deductive reasoning.
In my view, this is the key to the real beauty of this film. There are no aliens, no monsters, no criminal instincts or human actions that produce negative reactions. Everything is based on survival, on using intelligence and, above all, humour to extend a stay, which, although not pleasant, must be sustained. Otherwise, death is the only other option. Without Matt Damon, this film would not have the poignancy and comedy that it does. But it is not only that aspect that moves the audience, but within the worst desolation a human can experience, the only thing that keeps him alive and hoping to breathe again without a scuba mask over his men is knowing how to think and use rationally the resources he has.
Y hasta aquí con el relato de la trama de incidentes que suponen el entendimiento de esta película. La idea es que la vean y sobre todo, que noten que dentro del argumento de este film, la idea más recurrente es saber resolver problemas. Da igual si es en Marte, completamente sólo, o en el patio de tu casa. La clave es poder implementar soluciones útiles y simples para problemas, aparentemente, complicados y difíciles. Dicho esto, les pido que como público, si deciden ver esta película presten atención a los detalles sobre política, ciencia, evolución, solución de problemas, ingeniería, psicología clínica y sobre todo, razonamiento lógico y deductivo.
Desde mi óptica, esta es la clave de la belleza real de este film. No hay aliens, ni monstruos, ni instintos criminales o acciones humanas que produzcan reacciones negativas. Todo se basa en la supervivencia, en emplear la inteligencia y sobre todo, el humor para poder extender una estancia, que aunque no es placentera, debe ser sostenida. De lo contrario, la muerte es la única otra opción. Sin Matt Damon, este largometraje no tendría esa picardía y comedia que tiene. Pero no es sólo ese aspecto el que conmueve al público, sino que dentro de la peor desolación que un humano pueda experimentar, lo único que lo mantiene vivo y con esperanzas de volver a respirar sin una escafandra sobre sus hombres es saber pensar y usar racionalmente los recursos que posee.
By the way, I can't end this post/review about The Martian without asking you a rhetorical question that will surely provoke some opinions. Can you imagine being trapped in a place for at least 4 years, with no possibility of escaping or getting out, and the only music to keep you entertained and not go crazy is disco music (like ABBA or The Bee Gees)? Believe me, everything about this film has been carefully thought out. And it is an adaptation of the wonderful novel written by Andy Weir, and watching it will not leave you indifferent. Personally, I highly recommend it. Whether you are a fan of the space genre or if you love comedies with intelligence. In both cases, you should give it a chance. There's action, brilliance, survival and lots of science, lots and lots of it.
Finally, for fans of piracy and above all history, in The Martian, you'll find a very curious but real explanation (again, using logic and deductive reasoning) of what it's like to conquer a place for the first time. Francis Drake, "space pirates" and a lot of humour are some of the features you will witness as an audience during a scene that is brief but rich in content. Especially if we are talking about exploration and belonging. Concepts, which may not have much relevance in planetary terms at present, but as space exploration improves and becomes more relevant to the global economy, it may take on a transcendental importance.
Por cierto, no puedo terminar este post/review sobre The Martian, sin antes hacerles una pregunta retórica que seguramente provocará algunas opiniones. Y es que, ¿se imaginan estar atrapados en un lugar por al menos 4 años, sin posibilidad de escapar o salir, y la única música para entretenerse y no volverse locos, sea música disco (como ABBA o The Bee Gees)? Créanme, todo sobre esta película ha sido cuidadosamente pensado. Y es una adaptación de la maravillosa novela escrita por Andy Weir y que al verla no te dejará indiferente. Personalmente, la recomiendo totalmente. Tanto, si eres fanático del género espacial o si amas las comedias con inteligencia. En ambos casos, deberías darle una oportunidad. Hay acción, brillantez, supervivencia y mucha ciencia, muchísima.
Finalmente, para los amantes de la piratería y sobre todo de la historia, en The Martian, hallarán una muy curiosa pero real explicación (una vez más, empleando la lógica y el razonamiento deductivo) sobre lo que es conquistar un lugar por primera vez. Francis Drake, "piratas espaciales" y mucho humor, son algunas de las características que podrán presenciar como audiencia durante una escena que es breve pero rica en contenido. Sobre todo, si de exploración y pertenencia estamos hablando. Conceptos, que quizá en términos planetarios no tenga mucha relevancia actualmente, pero que a medida que la exploración espacial mejore y sea más relevante para la economía mundial, quizá coja una importancia trascendental.
