Hola amigos de la comunidad Movies & TV Shows. El compañero @huesos me ha nominado para esta interesante iniciativa y estoy feliz de sumarme a ello. Pienso que puede ser una mina de oro para obras poco conocidas o poco valoradas.
Aquí vamos.
Introducción: Los mejores amigos del hombre están hechos de metal.
En serio amo la ciencia ficción. Creo que el género permite plantear preguntas incomodas ya que describe escenarios potenciales basados en el conocimiento científico y desarrollo tecnológico, para luego especular sobre nuestro comportamiento como individuos y como sociedad.
Los robots, androides, cyborgs e inteligencias artificiales son tema recurrentes en estas historias. Los relatos de Isaac Asimov, R2-D2 Y C3PO de Star Wars, el robot neurotico Marvin de La Guia del Autoestopista Galactico de Douglas Adams, el niño David de Inteligencia Artificial, The Terminator, Jarvis y Vision, etc. Nos encantan estos amigos hechos de metal. En el mercado siempre hay historias que los incluyen. Los futurólogos y soñadores pensamos que pronto serán parte de nuestra vida común.
Estas cuestiones sacuden nuestros sentidos más humanos. Si un Androide o Robot pudiese desarrollar conciencia de sí mismo... ¿Cómo deberíamos reaccionar? ¿Reconocer sus derechos? ¿Tratarlos como seres vivos? ¿O seguirían siendo propiedad? ¿Qué es la conciencia; en cualquier caso? ¿Dónde se aloja?
La película que quiero reseñar hoy, Chappie, describe estos tópicos de manera sensible y amena, con un protagonista Androide carismático y un elenco con figuras como Dev Patel y Hugh Jackman.

En un futuro próximo, una opresiva fuerza policial mecanizada es la encargada de patrullar el crimen. Pero el pueblo se está revelando contra ello. La idea de un Androide que desarrolla una personalidad propia, un yo que lo hace distinto a los demás, no es nueva. Pero en Chappie esto se plantea desde la perspectiva del crecimiento: Chappie es un niño. Es inocente, influenciable, curioso y en ocasiones irritante. Al igual que un humano, va descubriendo al mundo poco a poco, de la mano de dos criminales del bajo mundo de Johanesburgo: Ninja y Yo-landi (que son el grupo de HipHop Sudafricano Die Antwoord), que para bien o para mal terminan siendo las figuras paternas de nuestro Androide. La actuación del duo es uno de los puntos más débiles de la película, pero no evita que llegues a simpatizar con ellos.
Los dos antes mencionados le arrebatan de su creador, Deon, e introducen a Chappie a un mundo de violencia y muerto. Sin embargo, hay dos elementos contrapuestos: Vemos a un Ninja que solo ve a Chappie como una herramienta y a una Yo-landi que se encariña con el robot y lo adopta como hijo. Es aquí donde Chappie tiene su conexión más profunda con la humanidad; en la figura materna que Yo-landi le proporciona, va moldeando sus afectos y pasiones hasta el punto de desarrollar cariño, amor y una multitud de comportamientos que solo podemos describir como: emociones humanas.
Además de la relación con Yo-landi, el punto más especial de la película con respecto al desarrollo de Chappie es su relación con la violencia, pues Ninja y su pandilla lo obligan a cometer crímenes y experimentar la vida en las calles. Un Johanesburgo en donde hay robots policías y zonas marginales controladas por señores del crimen. Esto es doloroso, porque como dije, Chappie es como un niño. Un niño que se ve lanzado a un mundo de adultos y que no entiende por qué el mundo es tan cruel con él.
Vuelvo hacia atrás para hablar del creador de Chappie, Deon, caracterizado por Dev Patel y el antagonista, Vincent, interpretado por Hugh Jackman. Pues ofrecen otro contraste, esta vez, en perspectivas de cómo debería comportarse la ciencia, o al menos, la comunidad científica, en cuanto a al desarrollo de robots e inteligencia. Pues Deon cree que puede hacer más que solo fabricar armas y Vincent solo piensa en su propia fama y orgullo.
Al final, la ciencia es una herramienta de nosotros los humanos. Ciencia para hacer avanzar a la humanidad y lograr maravillas, o ciencia para destruir y volver a cometer los mismos errores.
Asimismo, hay una cuestión que termina prevaleciendo sobre las otras; las preguntas que mencioné al principio y siempre nos hace temblar, Chappie tiene emociones y afecto, desarrolla poco a poco una personalidad, un ser, que logra conectarse con el espectador. Sharlto Copley hace la voz de Chappie de una forma que a veces me hacia temblar. El desenvolvimiento de Chappie en la historia nos lleva a un punto fundamental, el mismo que mencioné al principio: ¿Qué es la conciencia? ¿Algo físico o abstracto? ¿Puede una maquina desarrollarla? ¿Qué significaría para nosotros si la conciencia puede ser identificada, computarizada y transferida?
En un desenlace emotivo, Chappie toca otro tema que adoro:** el transhumanismo**. La idea de que el humano puede trascender sus límites con ayuda de la tecnología.
¿Por qué creo que es una película que merece mejor reconocimiento?
Es una obra de ciencia ficción que no toca el tema de los robots en una dicotomía de bueno o malo, sino que intenta hacer reflexionar al espectador sobre la posibilidad de que un robot tenga su propia identidad. Si bien no es una obra libre de problemas, ni mucho menos la unica en su estilo, sí creo que debería ser más conocida, ya que cada una trata esos dilemas con su propio estilo. Necesitamos más obras que nos hagan replantearnos nuestra ética hacia los demás seres vivos.
Además,tiene sus grandes momentos de comedia y acción, lo que la hace fácil y divertida de ver.
Nota: El director de Chappie, Neill Blomkamp ha dirigido y escrito otras dos obras que me encantan: Elysium y la película de culto District 9. Películas que me gustaría reseñar en otra ocasión. Mientras esperamos la ya anunciada: District 10.

Introduction: Man's best friends are made of metal.
I seriously love science fiction. I think the genre allows us to ask uncomfortable questions as it describes potential scenarios based on scientific knowledge and technological development, and then speculate on our behavior as individuals and as a society.
Robots, androids, cyborgs and artificial intelligences are recurring themes in these histories. Isaac Asimov's stories, Marvin the Neurotic Robot from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by the brilliant Douglas Adams, R2-D2 and C3PO from Star Wars, the boy David from Artificial Intelligence, The Terminator, Jarvis and Vision, etc. We love these friends made of metal. There are always stories on the market that include them. We futurists and dreamers think they will soon be part of our common life.
These issues shake our most human senses. if an Android or Robot could develop self-awareness... How should we react? Recognize their rights? Treat them as living beings? Or would they remain property? What is consciousness; in any case? Where is it housed?
The film I want to review today, Chappie, depicts these topics in a sensitive and enjoyable way, with a charismatic Android protagonist and a cast featuring the likes of Dev Patel and Hugh Jackman.

In the near future, crime is patrolled by an oppressive mechanized police force. But now, the people are fighting back. The idea of an Android that develops a personality of its own, a self that makes it different from others, is not new. But in Chappie this is approached from the perspective of growth: Chappie is a child. He is innocent, impressionable, curious and sometimes irritating. Like a human, he gradually discovers the world, hand in hand with two criminals from the Johannesburg underworld: Ninja and Yo-landi (who are the South African HipHop group Die Antwoord), who for better or worse end up being our Android's father figures. The duo's acting is one of the film's weakest points, but it doesn't stop you from coming to sympathize with them.
The aforementioned two take him away from his creator, Deon, and introduce Chappie to a world of violence and death. However, there are two opposing elements: We see a Ninja who only sees Chappie as a tool and a Yo-landi who grows fond of the robot and adopts him as a son. It is here that Chappie has his deepest connection with humanity; in the mother figure that Yo-landi provides him, he molds his affections and passions to the point of developing affection, love and a multitude of behaviors that we can only describe as: human emotions.
Besides the relationship with Yo-landi, the most special point of the film regarding Chappie's development is his relationship with violence. Ninja and his gang force him to commit crimes and experience life on the streets. A Johannesburg where there are police robots and slum areas controlled by crime lords. This is painful, because as I said, Chappie is like a child. A child who is thrown into a world of adults and doesn't understand why the world is so cruel to him.
I go backwards to talk about Chappie's creator, Deon, characterized by Dev Patel and the antagonist, Vincent, played by Hugh Jackman. For they offer another contrast, this time, in perspectives on how science, or at least the scientific community, should behave when it comes to the development of robots and intelligence. For Deon believes he can do more than just make weapons and Vincent thinks only of his own fame and pride.
In the end, science is a tool of us humans. Science to advance mankind and achieve wonders, or science to destroy and make the same mistakes again.
Likewise, there is one issue that ends up prevailing over the others; the questions I mentioned at the beginning and always makes us tremble, Chappie has emotions and affection, he develops little by little a personality, a being, that manages to connect with the viewer. Sharlto Copley does the voice of Chappie in a way that sometimes made me shudder. Chappie's unfolding of the story brings us to a fundamental point, the same one I mentioned at the beginning: What is consciousness, something physical or abstract? Can a machine develop it? What would it mean for us if consciousness can be identified, computerized and transferred?
In an emotional denouement, Chappie touches on another theme I adore: transhumanism. The idea that humans can transcend their limits with the help of technology.
Why do I think it is a film that deserves better recognition?
It is a work of science fiction that does not touch on the subject of robots in a dichotomy of good or evil, but rather tries to make the viewer reflect on the possibility of a robot having its own identity. While it is not a problem-free work, nor is it the only one in its style, I do think it should be better known, as each one deals with these dilemmas in its own style. We need more works that make us rethink our ethics towards other living beings.
It also has a good moments of comedy and action, which makes it easy and fun to watch.
Note: The director of Chappie, Neill Blomkamp has directed and written two other works that I love: Elysium and the cult film District 9. I will be happy to review these films next time, while we wait for the already announced: District 10.
