Blackway, also known in some Latin American countries as Blackway (Go with Me), is a little gem of a modern western set in the Pacific Northwest of the USA, reminiscent at times of the style that has characterised the best of Quentin Tarantino's films for decades.
It is a film that concentrates only on the three main characters and the mission that each of them has to accomplish, stripping away any other secondary elements.
In a community between indifferent and hostile to any kind of investigation that could alter the routine of their lives, in which nobody seems to care about anyone else, with few words and a methodical plot that is woven with the human nature of each character, the film gradually focuses on its objective: to show that violence is always present in the nature of human beings. And that in this case it finds a natural environment such as autumn in the forests of the North American northwest to explode in all its violence.
The plot is set in a wooded town in the Pacific Northwest of the USA where the "most feared man in the whole area - an ex-sheriff named Blackway - seems to be the lord and master of the land and the people. No one dares to confront it. No one dares to even talk about him. Let alone criticise him. Nor even indicate where he lives.
And it is in this caustic and sober atmosphere that a trio of people decide to take revenge: a young woman who arrives in the village, an old man who has every reason to do so and the village idiot.
For this reason, when they start asking questions about the crominal, an omertá silence seems to surround all the inhabitants like a halo.
Not even the "village council of wise men" gathered in a sawmill helps them by giving them the address of where it is located. Yet they know it by heart.
Even the Indian community on the US-Canadian border has its reasons to be suspicious of the investigations and does not help them.
The idea of the trio is to find the mobster, maniac and murderer and bring him to his senses. Or, failing that, to eliminate him.
Its director Daniel Alfredson, who had already pleasantly surprised us with Skumtimmen a couple of years earlier, more precisely in 2013, proves that with few elements you can make a good film. Especially if you have an actor of the stature of Anthony Hopkins, still at the end of his career.
The Protector, or Blackway Go With Me as we want to call it, is above all a contemporary revenge story based on a very simple, almost Spartan adaptation of Castle Freeman Jr.'s book, where at times the real protagonist seems to be the landscape, the wooded trails of British Columbia and a climate of oppressive human relationships.
The film is part of the new wave of so-called "contemporary American realism", set in a rural, wild, mountainous, wooded USA, where human relationships, often distorted by drug and alcohol abuse, produce a mind-boggling mental and cultural obtuseness in its inhabitants.

El Protector conocida también en algunos países de Hispanoamérica con el título de** Blackway (Go with Me)** es una pequeña joya de western moderno ambientada en el Pacífico noroeste de los EE. UU. que nos hace recordar por momentos ese estilo que caracterizó por décadas lo mejor del cine de Quentin Tarantino.
Es una película concentrada solo en los tres personajes principales y en la misión que cada uno de ellos debe cumplir, despojándose de cualquier otro elemento secundario.
En una comunidad entre indiferente y hostil a cualquier tipo de investigación que pueda alterar la rutina de sus vidas, en la que a nadie parece importarle nada de los demás, con pocas palabras y un argumento metódico que se va hilvanando con la naturaleza humana de cada personaje la película va centrando de a poco su objetivo: demostrar que la violencia está siempre presente en la naturaleza del ser humano. Y que en este caso encuentra un entorno natural como es el otoño en los bosques del noroeste norteamericano para explotar en toda su violencia.
La trama se desarrolla en un pueblo boscoso del Pacífico noroeste de los EE. UU. donde el "hombre más temido de toda la zona, un tal Blackway ex-sheriff- parece ser el dueño y señor del territorio y las personas. Nadie se atreve a enfrentarla. Nadie se atreve ni siquiera a hablar de él. Y mucho menos criticarlo. Ni siquiera indicar donde vive.
Y en ese ambiente cáustico y sobrio que un trio de personas decide vengarse: una joven que llega al pueblo, un anciano que tiene sobrados motivos para hacerlo y el tonto del pueblo.
Por ese motivo cuando comienzan a hacer preguntas sobre el crominal un silencio de omertá parece rodear como un halo a todos los habitantes.
Ni siquiera el "consejo de sabios del pueblo" reunido en un aserradero los ayuda suministrándoles la dirección de donde se encuentra. No obstante la conozcan de memoria.
Incluso la comunidad india situada en la frontera entre EE. UU. y Canadá tiene sus motivos para desconfiar de las investigaciones y no los ayuda.
La idea que se propone el trio es encontrar al mafioso, maniaco y asesino y hacerlo entrar en razón. O, caso contrario, eliminarlo.
Su director Daniel Alfredson que ya nos había soprendido gratamente con Skumtimmen un par de años antes, más precisamente en 2013, demuestra que con pocos elementos se puede hacer hacer un buen film. Especialmente si se cuenta con un actor de la talla de Anthony Hopkins, aún en la parte final de su carrera.
El Protector o Blackway Go With Me como quiéramos llamarla es, sobretodo, una historia de venganza contemporánea basada en una daptación muy simple, casi espartana, del libro de Castle Freeman Jr. donde, a veces, el verdadero protagonista parece ser el paisaje, los senderos boscosos de la Columbia Británica y un clima oprimente en las relaciones humanas.
La película hace parte de la nueva ola llamada "realismo contemporáneo norteamericano" caracterizado ambientado en un EE. UU. rural, selvaje, montañoso, boscoso, donde muchas veces las relaciones humanas desvtadas por el consumo de la droga y del alcohol producen en sus habitantes una alucinante obtusidad mental y cultural.
