A lo largo de estos días no había querido leer ninguna reseña acerca de este film que se han hecho por acá para no condicionarme sabiendo la clase de película que es y de todo lo que se ha dicho y comentado. Creo que llegar, sentarse y comenzar a ver sin saber absolutamente nada al respecto fue la mejor decisión ya que estamos ante algo que es muy impresionante y de tal magnitud que en ocasiones me reía ante las barbaridades e incomodidades que aparecían en pantalla en vez de sentir algún tipo de asco o repulsión. De entrada les digo algo a aquellos que aún no la ven: si son personas que fácilmente se alteran por un poco de sangre y gore, definitivamente este film no es para ustedes. Pero para mi? - del mejor terror que he visto en muchos años.
Throughout these days I had not wanted to read any review about this film that have been made here so as not to condition myself knowing the kind of film it is and everything that has been said and commented. I think that arriving, sitting down and starting to watch it without knowing absolutely nothing about it was the best decision since we are facing something that is very impressive and of such magnitude that at times I laughed at the barbarities and discomfort that appeared on screen instead of feeling some kind of disgust or repulsion. I'll tell those of you who haven't seen it yet: if you're a person who is easily upset by a little blood and gore, this film is definitely not for you. But for me? - It's some of the best horror I've seen in years.
Quién no ha soñado con el hecho de no envejecer y de conservar la juventud tan preciada? - pues esta historia es de eso. Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) es una aclamada actriz y figura pública a la que, aparentemente y según los cánones de belleza de la televisión, su tiempo frente de una cámara ha llegado a su fin; ya no es la mujer joven que los productores quieren. Ella es la típica persona que necesita validación constante lo que la ha llevado a tener cierta dependencia a la atención, al ver que todo eso se le va de las manos decide tomar decisiones drásticas. A sus manos llega "La Sustancia", un producto que asegura poder lograr y conseguir "la mejor versión" mediante la división celular, es decir, habrán físicamente dos Elisabeth.
Who hasn't dreamed of not growing old and preserving their precious youth? - Well, that's what this story is about. Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) is an acclaimed actress and public figure whose time in front of a camera has apparently come to an end, according to the canons of television beauty; she is no longer the young woman that producers want. She is the typical person who needs constant validation which has led her to have a certain dependence on attention, seeing that all this is getting out of hand she decides to take drastic decisions. Into her hands comes “The Substance”, a product that claims to be able to achieve and get “the best version” through cell division, that is, there will be physically two Elisabeth.

Pero no todo es tan fácil. Al haber dos, que en esencia son una, tendrán que compartir el tiempo, una semana para cada una, sin excepción, todo con la finalidad de mantener un equilibrio. Es un manual con unas instrucciones, parece sencillo pero siempre hay efectos colaterales o contraindicaciones. Cada una al vivir su semana se da cuenta de lo que carece o le sobra a la otra por lo que es posible que esas semanas sean un ligero caos llenos de excesos lo que al final traerá todo el desastre y abominación que veremos. Hay que tener claro que este film, más allá del terror, es una crítica dura a la industria y sus estándares de belleza y al hecho de que las mujeres son meros productos para la televisión.
But not everything is so easy. As there are two, which are essentially one, they will have to share time, one week for each, without exception, all in order to maintain a balance. It is a manual with instructions, it seems simple but there are always side effects or contraindications. Each one living their week realizes what the other one lacks or has too much of, so it is possible that these weeks are a slight chaos full of excesses, which in the end will bring all the disaster and abomination that we will see. It should be clear that this film, beyond the horror, is a harsh criticism of the industry and its beauty standards and the fact that women are mere products for television.
La trama es un viaje a la depravación porque nos pinta el descenso abrupto de Elisabeth en su afán de no querer perder la atención y de buscar la constante validación para así sentirse mínimamente mejor con ella misma. Esto la lleva a cometer las locuras que hace y es que gracias a eso nace Sue (Margaret Qualley), la "mejor" versión de Elisabeth. Lo curioso es que en teoría son la misma persona pero veremos como cada una buscará complacer, tapar o resolver sus enormes complejos sin pensar en la otra; es tal el egoísmo y la dependencia entre ellas (suena contradictorio pero es así), que actuarán sin pensar en los daños colaterales antes mencionados.
The plot is a journey into depravity because it paints the abrupt descent of Elisabeth in her desire to not want to lose attention and to seek constant validation in order to feel at least minimally better about herself. This leads her to commit the crazy things she does and it is thanks to this that Sue (Margaret Qualley), the “better” version of Elisabeth, is born. The funny thing is that in theory they are the same person but we will see how each one will seek to please, cover or solve their huge complexes without thinking about the other; the selfishness and dependence between them is such (it sounds contradictory but it is so), that they will act without thinking about the collateral damage mentioned above.

Visualmente es extraordinaria, colores, estilos, planos, secuencias; hay escenas que te hacen moverte de la silla, todo es muy grotesco y desagradable. Hay una en particular de Dennis Quaid comiendo camarones la cual una oda a la repugnancia, obviamente se entiende el por qué y es que aquello es un reflejo de su personalidad. La violencia y el gore es el plato fuerte, verán cosas que muy probablemente no hayan visto en un film, cosas que te pondrán incómodo, el terror y horror corporal en su máxima expresión. Crimes of the Future de David Cronenberg está en pañales al lado de este film. Y es que además también hay unas pinceladas violentas hacia el final de la película que son muy top; sinceramente es un film que lo tiene todo si eres amante y fanático del género.
Visually it is extraordinary, colors, styles, shots, sequences; there are scenes that make you move out of your chair, everything is very grotesque and disgusting. There is one in particular of Dennis Quaid eating shrimp which is an ode to disgust, obviously you can understand why and that is a reflection of his personality. The violence and gore is the main course, you will see things you have probably never seen in a film, things that will make you uncomfortable, terror and body horror at its best. David Cronenberg's Crimes of the Future is in diapers next to this film. And there are also some violent touches towards the end of the film that are very top; sincerely it is a film that has it all if you are a lover and fan of the genre.
Demi Moore estuvo impresionante, de las mejores actuaciones que se ha marcado en su carrera. Interpretar una personalidad como la de Elisabeth es complejo y si a eso le sumamos los traumas y el terror por el que ella transita a lo largo de la trama pues la verdad hay poco malo que decir. Una mujer con un autoestima muy dañada y sumamente dependiente de la atención. Por el otro lado Margaret no se queda atrás. El papel de ser la mujer bella a ella se le hace sencillo pero cuando hay que hacer el cambio y toca ponerse el traje en donde le toca sufrir y pagar por lo que hace también entrega unas escenas memorables. Una película sostenida por estas dos mujeres en su totalidad. Buen papel de Dennis Quaid, estoy seguro que es un reflejo exacto de esos directivos de televisión.
Demi Moore was impressive, one of the best performances she has given in her career. Playing a personality like Elisabeth's is complex and if we add to that the traumas and terror she goes through throughout the plot, there is little bad to say. A woman with a very damaged self-esteem and extremely dependent on attention. On the other side Margaret is no slouch. The role of being the beautiful woman is easy for her but when she has to make the change and has to put on the suit where she has to suffer and pay for what she does, she also delivers some memorable scenes. A film sustained by these two women in its entirety. Good role of Dennis Quaid, I'm sure he is an accurate reflection of those television executives.

Un film del que se está hablando mucho y con bastante razón, definitivamente no te deja indiferente, o te parece brutal o lo detestas, no hay tintes medios creo yo. Personalmente me pareció brillante, tanto el mensaje que se quiere transmitir como la forma en como la directora Coralie Fargeat lo logra. 8.5/10. Es un terror en toda regla con todos sus elementos bien marcados y bien representados. Recomendada a todos los que de verdad les gustan estas películas y a los que no, bueno, hagan el intento, vale mucho la pena. Les dejo el tráiler por acá.
A film that is being talked about a lot and quite rightly, it definitely does not leave you indifferent, you either find it brutal or you hate it, there is no middle ground I think. Personally I found it brilliant, both the message it wants to convey and the way in which the director Coralie Fargeat achieves it. 8.5/10. It is a full-fledged horror with all its elements well marked and well represented. Recommended to all those who really like these movies and to those who don't, well, give it a try, it's worth it.
