Weekly recommendation. Two films for lovers of the horror genre.

These two films have a lot in common besides the genre. I saw Immaculata quite a while ago, it was the first one I saw. It was available in my country and without waiting too long I found the premise quite intriguing.
It is Immaculata that shows the most signs of drinking from the fountainhead of the nunspoitation style, a sub-genre very popular in the seventies. It immediately reminded me of many similar films I used to rent from video stores.
The stories set in old convents, with shadowy nuns and priests, who seem to have other, unholy intentions. Dark secrets among the cassocks. Superior priests who rule with an iron fist. Religious symbolism everywhere. All this is a source of opportunities to develop horror stories. Good and evil inside temples that have been consecrated as sacred depending on one's religion.
This type of film is also characterised by nuns who look like top models. Beautiful. They have spectacular bodies and beautiful faces. In real life I have never seen nuns as beautiful as the ones presented in the movies. And you? We have to accept that this is part of fictional stories. I also think that there is a kind of fetish behind all this. There's a reason why in the shops where they sell intimate toys for adults they always have nun costumes so that couples can role-play. The filmmakers know that this sells and that's why their nun characters in the movies will be beautiful.
Estas dos películas tienen mucho en común además del género. Vi Inmaculada hace bastante tiempo, fue la primera que vi. Estaba disponible en mi país y sin esperar demasiado encontré la premisa bastante intrigante.
Es Inmaculada la que da más muestras de beber de la fuente del estilo nunspoitation, un subgénero muy popular en los años setenta. Me recordó inmediatamente a muchas películas similares que solía alquilar en los videoclubs.
Las historias ambientadas en viejos conventos, con monjas y curas tenebrosos, que parecen tener otras intenciones, impías. Oscuros secretos entre las sotanas. Sacerdotes superiores que gobiernan con puño de hierro. Simbología religiosa por doquier. Todo esto es una fuente de oportunidades para desarrollar historias de horror. El bien y el mal dentro de templos que han sido consagrados como sagrados dependiendo de la religión que uno profese.
Este tipo de películas también se caracteriza por monjas que parecen top models. Hermosas. Tienen cuerpos espectaculares y caras preciosas. En la vida real nunca he visto monjas tan hermosas como las que presentan en las películas. ¿Y usted? Tenemos que aceptar que forma parte de las historias de ficción. También creo que detrás de todo esto hay una especie de fetiche. Por algo en las tiendas donde venden juguetes íntimos para adultos siempre tienen disfraces de monjas para que las parejas puedan hacer juegos de rol. Los cineastas saben que eso vende y por eso sus personajes de monjas en las películas serán hermosos.
A couple of months later I had the opportunity to see The First Prophecy. The truth is that I didn't really want to see it, I put it on without too many expectations. My first surprise was that at the beginning of the story I felt a sense of deja vu. I had already seen this! The plot of the film is very similar to that of Inmaculada. An American woman who is going to become a nun arrives at an old Italian convent. I haven't figured out which film was produced first, but the fact that they were released close to each other and that the stories are largely similar makes one wonder if there was a leak of the script. They could be coincidences, though.
The first prophecy is yet another attempt to exploit this franchise. Other films have already been tried and were a fiasco. With this one I think they have hit the bull's eye. I found it entertaining and the director Arkasha Stevenson gives it that touch of susepnso that the first two films of the original Prophecy had. The director had directed an episode of the series I reviewed some time ago, Brand New Cherry Flavor, where she already had some experience with this genre. The first Prophecy is a prequel to the original. We will discover the origin and birth of Damian, the antichrist. The film is satisfying and I see potential for further development of the franchise.
Immaculate is directed by Michael Mohan, a filmmaker with whom Sydney Sweeney already worked on the film The Voyeors, which I reviewed unfavourably, but I liked the director's new film better. Perhaps because of that sense of homage to the nunsplotation and because it has some scenes that I found very pleasurable. The one that made me generate the most dopamine was the final part of the film. A wild performance by the actress and they are not afraid to show a lot of blood. I didn't expect this from the film and was therefore positively surprised.
Un par de meses después tuve la oportunidad de ver La primera profecía. La verdad es que no tenía muchas ganas de verla, la puse sin demasiadas expectativas. Mi primera sorpresa es que al principio de la historia sentí un deja vu. ¡Esto ya lo había visto! El argumento de la película es muy similar al de Inmaculada. Una mujer americana que va a hacerse monja llega a un viejo convento italiano. No he averiguado qué película se produjo primero, pero el hecho de que se estrenasen cerca una de otra y de que las historias sean en gran medida similares, hace que uno se pregunte si hubo una filtración del guión. Aunque podrían ser coincidencias.
La primera profecía es un nuevo intento de explotar esta franquicia. Ya se intentó con otras películas y fueron un fiasco. Con esta creo que han dado en la diana. Me ha parecido entretenida y la directora Arkasha Stevenson le da ese toque de susepnso que tenían las dos primeras películas de la Profecía original. La directora había dirigido un episodio de la serie que reseñé hace tiempo Brand New Cherry Flavor donde ya tenía cierta experiencia con este género. La primera Profecia es una precuela de la original. Descubriremos el origen y nacimiento de Damian, el anticristo. La película es satisfactoria y veo potencial para seguir desarrollando la franquicia.
Immaculate está dirigida por Michael Mohan, cineasta con el que Sydney Sweeney ya trabajó en la película The Voyeors, cuya crítica hice y no fue muy favorable, pero esta nueva película del director me ha gustado más. Quizá por ese sensacion de homenaje a la nunsplotation y porque tiene algunas escenas que me parecieron muy placenteras. La que más dopamina me hizo generar fue la parte final de la película. Una interpretación salvaje por parte de la actriz y no tienen miedo a mostrar mucha sangre. No me esperaba esto de la película y por ello me sorprendió positivamente.
Both films also have in common that the strength of their stories lies in their protagonists. In Immaculata she is Sydney Sweeney, an actress I have praised before. She may be seen as attractive by many, and in many of the productions she has starred in she has shown off her great physical attributes. But she is a talented actress and in Immaculate she proves it again.
Actress Nell Tiger Free stars in The First Prophecy as the novice Margaret. I have seen her in the miniseries Too Old to Die Young, where she played the lead bride, and in the film Settlers, also in a supporting role. I haven't seen the Servant series, so I didn't have much reference to her. I think this film was her chance to stand out and become better known. I liked her performance and she managed to combine that innocence and mystery that the character needed.
They are similar but at the same time different stories. My recommendation is that you watch them in one night. In any order you want. Just enjoy a double session of films about nuns and diabolical children.

Ambas películas también tienen en común que la fuerza de sus historias reside en sus protagonistas. En Inmaculada es Sydney Sweeney, una actriz a la que ya he elogiado anteriormente. Quizá muchos la vean atractiva y en muchas de las producciones que ha protagonizado ha hecho gala de sus grandes atributos físicos. Pero es una actriz de talento y en Immaculate vuelve a demostrarlo.
La actriz Nell Tiger Free protagoniza La primera profecía, en el papel de la novicia Margaret. La he visto en la miniserie Too Old to Die Young, donde interpretaba a la novia protagonista, y en la película Settlers, también en un papel secundario. No he visto la serie Servant, así que no tenía muchas referencias sobre ella. Creo que esta película era su oportunidad para destacar y hacerse más conocida. Me gustó su interpretación y consiguió conjugar esa inocencia y misterio que necesitaba el personaje.
Son historias parecidas pero a la vez diferentes. Mi recomendación es que las veas en una noche. En el orden que quieras. Simplemente disfruta de una sesión doble de películas sobre monjas e hijos diabólicos.
