I was really looking forward to seeing this film directed by Brandon Cronenberg. With this film, all doubts are definitively dispelled and we can feel at ease. The Cronenberg name will continue to delight us with his disturbing cinematographic proposals. The son will take his father's place.
Why do I like Cronenberg's films? Pleasure, I feel pleasure watching these films. For me they are a visual orgy, where the disgusting, violent, bloody and bizarre scenes activate in my brain the sensation of enjoyment, maybe it is a way of releasing the tension accumulated by the daily occupations. It could also be that deep down I have the fantasy of living an experience similar to that of the characters that populate Cronenberg's films.
I don't mind at all the opinions of people who criticise these films negatively. Not everyone can like body horror. Others say they don't understand it, some can't stand it because some scenes disgust them. What matters to me is what they make me feel, they give me a strong dose of pleasure.
Those of us who follow the trajectory of father and son know what we are going to find, we expect our ration of grotesque images that stimulate our minds through image and sound.
It's a kind of cinema that is becoming increasingly scarce in a market that only offers superhero franchises, so I'm glad that David Cronenberg's son has continued his father's style, as well as putting his own personal stamp on it. I will continue to wait impatiently for each new project, to admire and succumb to the joy, just as the character called James Foster does when he is a spectator of what would be his own execution.
What is the plot of the film?
The island of Tolqa is a tourist destination for the enjoyment of wealthy people. Writer James Foster, who has only written one unsuccessful book, seeks inspiration with his wife Em Foster, daughter of a renowned publisher and the one with the money. The island is dangerous, under a dictatorial regime and tourists are advised not to go outside the resort. They befriend another couple. Alban and Gabi Bauer, an architect who has done work on the island and an actress. This friendship will completely change the life of James Foster, who cannot imagine the horror he is about to experience and whose depraved acts will become an addiction.
Tenía muchas ganas de ver esta película dirigida por Brandon Cronenberg. Con esta película se disipan definitivamente todas las dudas y podemos sentirnos tranquilos. El apellido Cronenberg seguirá deleitándonos con sus inquietantes propuestas cinematográficas. El hijo ocupará el lugar de su padre.
¿Por qué me gustan las películas de Cronenberg? Placer, siento placer viendo estas películas. Para mí son una orgía visual, donde las escenas repugnantes, violentas, sangrientas y bizarras activan en mi cerebro la sensación de goce, tal vez sea una forma de liberar la tensión acumulada por las ocupaciones cotidianas. También puede ser que en el fondo tenga la fantasía de vivir una experiencia similar a la de los personajes que pueblan las películas de los Cronenberg.
No me molestan en absoluto las opiniones de la gente que critica negativamente estas películas. No a todo el mundo le puede gustar el body horror. Otros dicen que no lo entienden, algunos no lo soportan porque les repugnan algunas escenas. A mí lo que me importa es lo que me hacen sentir, me producen una fuerte dosis de placer.
Los que seguimos la trayectoria de padre e hijo sabemos lo que nos vamos a encontrar, esperamos nuestra ración de imágenes grotescas que nos estimula la mente a través de la imagen y el sonido.
Es un tipo de cine cada vez más escaso, en un mercado que sólo ofrece franquicias de superhéroes, por eso me alegra que el hijo de David Cronenberg haya continuado con el estilo de su padre, además de imprimir algo de su sello personal. Seguiré esperando con impaciencia cada nuevo proyecto, para admirar y sucumbir al gozo, igual que hace el personaje llamado James Foster cuando es espectador de lo que sería su propia ejecución.
¿Cuál es el argumento de la película?
La isla de Tolqa es un destino turístico para disfrute de gente adinerada. El escritor James Foster, que sólo ha escrito un libro sin éxito, busca inspiración con su esposa Em Foster, hija de un editor de renombre y la que tiene dinero. La isla es peligrosa, esta bajo un régimen dictatorial y se aconseja a los turistas que no salgan fuera del resort. Se hacen amigos de otra pareja. Alban y Gabi Bauer, un arquitecto que ha hecho obras en la isla y una actriz. Esta amistad cambiará por completo la vida de James Foster, que no imagina el horror que va a vivir y cuyos actos depravados se convertirán en una adicción.
Pleasure and power
I have repeated many times the term pleasure, why and what does power have to do with it? The film lets us see all the flesh, it shows us how pleasure and power go hand in hand to alter the senses and bring out the most degenerate part of the human being.
Imagine for a moment that you have the possibility of getting away with any crime you commit, that everything is solved by paying a generous amount of money. This will give you a free hand to do whatever you want regardless of the consequences. In addition, you will be forced to sit back and watch your sentence being carried out, only it's not really you.
This opens up a new world for the protagonist of the film and other characters who have gone through the same experience, they will feel as if they are swimming in one of those endless pools built by the architect, which give the visual sensation that they have no end and join the sea.
Experiencing his own death, but as a spectator, the knife penetrating his body multiple times, the overflowing blood and the sensation of pleasure that James Foster will feel, will awaken the wild animal that seems to be asleep inside his skin. New pleasurable experiences will send him into a vortex of lust and death. Will he have limits? Will there be anything that makes him feel disgusted? Will he have lost empathy for the lives of others?
Anything that produces a sense of wellbeing is addictive, it is hard to resist having the power to commit robbery and murder, when you know that you will not be condemned, that the next day you will be free to satisfy that hunger to feel like a God again. If the sci-fi world depicted in the film existed in real life, I would be one of those who would gladly fall into that spiral of aberrations. Oh, I forget, to live that experience, I must have a lot of money.
That's another layer of the film. Money and how the privileged elite can enjoy the strangest pleasures, especially if they are in third world tourist spots, poor countries with high levels of corruption. In the real world, rotten totalitarian systems are breeding grounds for corruption and where Mr. Money is the one who imposes his law. For example, sex tourism is a reality, where wealthy people can indulge their most perverse fantasies.
The line that separates good from evil is very thin and the film offers us an x-ray of human beings who transform themselves into monsters for a period of time, they are wealthy people, but they have families, jobs and in their daily life they can be very sweet, but every year they take their holidays, so that their worst version takes control and they give free rein to their lowest passions. They become addicted, they need that pleasure to get out of the daily monotony. Only it is a pleasure that leaves too much blood on the road.
The masks on the fictitious island in the story may be the masks we wear in society in reverse. In everyday life they hide the ugliest and most disgusting face, but there they may wear the mask that represents their perverse selves.
Placer y poder
He repetido muchas veces el término placer, ¿por qué y qué tiene que ver el poder? La película nos deja ver toda la carne, nos muestra como el placer y el poder van tomadas de la mano para alterar los sentidos y sacar la parte más degenerada del ser humano.
Imagina por un momento que tienes la posibilidad de salir impune de cualquier delito que cometas, que todo se soluciona pagando una generosa cantidad de dinero. Esto te dará vía libre para hacer lo que quieras sin importarte las consecuencias. Además, te verás obligado a sentarte y ver cómo se ejecuta tu sentencia, sólo que en realidad no eres tú.
Esto abre un nuevo mundo para el protagonista de la película y otros personajes que han pasado por la misma experiencia, se sentirán como si estuvieran nadando en una de esas piscinas infinitas construidas por el arquitecto, que dan la sensación visual de que no tienen fin y se unen al mar.
Experimentando su propia muerte, pero como espectador, el cuchillo penetrando múltiples veces en su cuerpo, la sangre desbordándose y la sensación de placer que sentirá James Foster, despertarán al animal salvaje que parece dormido dentro de su piel. Nuevas experiencias placenteras le harán entrar en una vorágine de lujuria y muerte. ¿Tendrá límites? ¿Habrá algo que le haga sentir asco? ¿Habrá perdido la empatía por la vida de los demás?
Cualquier cosa que produzca una sensación de bienestar es adictiva, es difícil resistirse a tener el poder de cometer robos y asesinatos, cuando sabes que no serás condenado, que al día siguiente serás libre para saciar esa hambre de volver a sentirte como un Dios. Si el mundo de ciencia ficción que muestra la película existiera en la vida real, yo sería uno de los que con gusto caería en esa espiral de aberraciones. Ah, se me olvida, para vivir esa experiencia, debo tener mucho dinero.
Esa es otra capa de la película. El dinero y cómo la élite privilegiada puede disfrutar de los placeres más extraños, sobre todo si se trata de lugares turísticos del tercer mundo, países pobres con altos niveles de corrupción. En el mundo real, los sistemas totalitarios podridos son caldo de cultivo para la corrupción y donde el señor Dinero es el que impone su ley. Por ejemplo, el turismo sexual es una realidad, donde la gente adinerada puede satisfacer sus fantasías más perversas.
La línea que separa el bien del mal es muy delgada y la película nos ofrece una radiografía de seres humanos que se transforman en monstruos durante un periodo de tiempo, son personas adineradas, pero tienen familia, trabajo y en su vida diaria pueden ser muy dulces, pero cada año se toman sus vacaciones, para que su peor versión tome el control y den rienda suelta a sus más bajas pasiones. Se vuelven adictos, necesitan ese placer para salir de la monotonía diaria. Sólo que es un placer que deja demasiada sangre en el camino.
Las máscaras de la isla ficticia del relato pueden ser las máscaras que llevamos en la sociedad al revés. En la vida cotidiana ocultan la cara más fea y repugnante, pero allí pueden llevar la máscara que representa su yo perverso.
Alexander Skarsgård plays James Foster, the failed writer, whose only book he has written is shit, the luxuries he indulges in are for his wife's money. At first we notice him bored, tired of the monotony of his life. He seeks inspiration to write again, but it seems his time to do so is over. Until a new world plunges him into troubled waters. Skarsgård is an excellent actor, the whole Skarsgård dynasty is outstanding. I wish I had a millionaire wife like the one in the film, but I need to have Alexander Skarsgård's body and face, haha.
Em Foster is played by Australian actress Cleopatra Coleman, I haven't seen any of the series where she has worked. This is the first time I've seen her. She does a very good job as the prototypical modern millionaire woman, with those lips in the style of all the Instagram influencers. I hate that kind of beauty that seems to predominate among the younger generation.
The perverse character Gab Bauer is played by Mia Goth. I was fascinated by the character, who at first exudes innocence and fragility and then transforms into total depravity. The actress captivated me last year with X and Pearl, this year I'm looking forward to the third film in that trilogy and I like the direction her career has taken in the horror genre.
The rest of the cast is made up of Canadian, Croatian and Hungarian actors, because production companies from those countries financed the film. Don't think that it is made by some Hollywood studio, in these times of rancid morals they don't bet on producing anything transgressive. The distribution is by an American company Neon, they have a good eye and always acquire the distribution rights of excellent films.
Infinity Pool is grotesque, depraved, disturbing. A film that will make you get out of your seat, either because you can't stand it or because it will give you pleasure. Join me in enjoying this cinematic experience.

Alexander Skarsgård interpreta a James Foster, el escritor fracasado, cuyo único libro que ha escrito es una mierda, los lujos que se permite son por el dinero de su mujer. Al principio lo notamos aburrido, cansado de la monotonía de su vida. Busca inspiración para volver a escribir, pero parece que su tiempo para hacerlo ha terminado. Hasta que un nuevo mundo le sumerge en aguas turbulentas. Skarsgård es un actor excelente, toda la dinastía Skarsgård es sobresaliente. Ojalá tuviera una esposa millonaria como la del film, pero necesito tener el cuerpo y la cara de Alexander Skarsgård, jajaja

La actriz me cautivó el año pasado con X y Pearl, este año espero con impaciencia la tercera película de esa trilogía y me gusta el rumbo que ha tomado su carrera dentro del genero horror.
El resto del reparto está formado por actores canadienses, croatas y húngaros, porque las productoras de esos países financiaron la película. No pienses que está hecha por algún estudio de Hollywood, en estos tiempos de moral rancia no apuestan por producir nada transgresor. La distribución si corre a cargo de una empresa americana Neon, ellos tienen buen ojo y siempre adquieren los derechos de distribución de excelentes películas.
Infinity Pool es grotesca, depravada, perturbadora. Una película que te hará levantarte de la butaca, ya sea porque no la soportas o porque te dará placer. Acompáñame a disfrutar de esta experiencia cinematográfica.
