1. The Wire

The absolute masterpiece of American television. There is no rival that reaches its level. David Simon's creation is a jewel of television. Broadcasted by HBO, every two years I come back to see all the seasons. It is the closest fiction to reality that you will see on television. It goes beyond a police series, it's about Baltimore, about a society whose system has failed. Five seasons where they deal with the police system, the ports, politics, education and the fifth estate. It is impossible to explain briefly what you are missing to see, some time ago I did a great review, I leave you the link to be convinced and give it a chance to see it. At the moment it is number one on my podium, and I think it is very difficult to take that place away from it.

Transmitida por HBO, cada dos años vuelvo a ver todas las temporadas. Es la ficción más cercana a la realidad que veras en televisión. Va mas allá de una serie policial, es sobre Baltimore y una sociedad cuyo sistema ha fracasado. Cinco temporadas donde abordan el sistema policial, los puertos, la política, la educación y el quinto poder. Es imposible explicarte brevemente lo que estás perdiendo de ver, hace un tiempo hice una estupenda reseña opinión, les dejo el link para se convenzan y le den la oportunidad de verla. Por los momentos es la número uno de mi pódium, y creo que es muy difícil quitarle ese puesto.

2. The Soprano

Another series from HBO, the private network that started the golden age of American television. The life of Tony Soprano, head of an Italian-American mafia family. He was the first antihero, the one who would make series where the protagonist was the bad guy fashionable. Macho, womanizer, murderer, but the public adored him. The relationship with his mother, whose actress died and his character also had to die in the second season, the stress of being a mobster causes him panic attacks and he will have to attend therapy. Excellent moments that left us the sessions with Dr. Melfi. James Gandolfini left this world, suddenly, as well as the controversial end of the series. The good news is that this year we will have a prequel movie to the series, called The Many Saints of NewarK and starring James Galdolfini's son, playing a young Tony Soprano. El fue el primer anti héroe, el que pondría de moda las series cuyo protagonista era el malo. Machista, mujeriego, asesino, pero el público lo amaba. La relación con su madre, cuya actriz murió y su personaje también tuvo que morir en la segunda temporada, el stress de ser jefe de la mafia le provoca ataques de pánico y deberá asistir a terapia. Excelentes momentos que nos dejaron las sesiones con la Doctora Melfi. James Gandolfini se fue de este mundo, de repente, así como el polémico final de la serie. La buena noticia es que este año tendremos una película precuela de la serie, se llama The Many Saints of NewarK y está protagonizada por el hijo de James Galdolfini, interpretando a un Tony Soprano de joven. Si todavía no la has visto, te estás perdiendo de una de las mejores producciones de la historia.

3. Breaking Bad – Better Call Saul

Breaking Bad hooked me since its first season, which was very short because it started during the famous writers' strike. It was in danger of not being renewed, fortunately it was possible to continue the story of Walter White, which would become a phenomenon from the third season. After a movie for Jesse Pinkman, it remains to be seen how Better Call Saul ends, to close the cycle.

Pensaras que hago trampa al colocar dos series en esta posición y que la segunda falta una temporada para su final. Pero ambas merecen compartir el mismo lugar en el podio. Vince Gilligan es el creador de estas dos maravillas. Breaking Bad me engancho desde su primera temporada, la cual fue muy corta por comenzar durante la famosa huelga de guionistas. Estuvo en peligro de no ser renovada, afortunadamente se puedo continuar la historia de Walter White, que se convertiría en un fenómeno a partir de la tercera temporada. Tras una película para Jesse Pinkman, solo nos falta ver como finaliza Better Call Saul, para cerrar el ciclo.

4. Six Feet Under

This series was before the third place. The story of the Fisher family, owners of a funeral home. Its creator Alan Ball, made us reflect on many aspects of life, through death. Each episode began with a Cold Open in which someone died, except for one episode, the last one. Here I discovered that talented actor named Michael C Hall, who years later would become the face of Dexter. Six Feet Under I can say that it is a series that has a perfect ending. Showing us the fate of each of the characters that for five seasons captivated us, with the song Breathe Me by Sia, before she became a mainstrean singer. Forever in love with Lauren Ambrose, the redhead who played Claire Fisher. Sometimes I look up the ending on youtube and it still makes me cry.

Esta serie estaba antes de tercer lugar. La historia de la familia Fisher, propietarios de una funeraria. Su creador Alan Ball, nos hacia reflexionar sobre muchos aspectos de la vida, a través de la muerte. Cada episodio comenzaba con un Cold Open donde alguien moría, excepto un episodio, el último. Aquí descubrí ese talentoso acto llamado Michael C Hall, que años después se convertiría en el rostro de Dexter. Six Feet Under puedo decir que es una serie que tiene un final perfecto. Mostrándonos el destino de cada uno de los personajes que por cinco temporadas nos cautivaron, con la canción Breathe Me de Sia, antes que se convirtiera en una cantante mainstrean. Enamorado por siempre de Lauren Ambrose, la peli roja que interpretaba a Claire Fisher. A veces busco el final en youtube y todavía me hace llorar.

5. Battlestar Galactica

Remake of a series from the seventies, the new version is a masterpiece of science fiction. Ronald D. Moore did an incredible job. The seven colonies are destroyed by the Cylons, artificial machines that reveal themselves. The only survivors must travel in the ancient ship Battlestar Galactica, under the military command of Captain Adama. A series that touched on important issues such as terrorism, totalitarianism, politics and religion, while we enjoyed their battles and the dangers they had to face, searching for a planet called Earth. I did a complete review of this series, in this link you can read it. It also has for me, a perfect ending and amazing female characters. Here's to you Kara "Starbuck" Thrace. Currently a Remake is being prepared, by Sam Smail, the creator of Mr Robot and he has promised to respect the essence of the series. I don't really like the idea, it's a work that shouldn't be touched, but with Smail behind it, I give it a vote of confidence.

Remake de una serie de la década de los setenta, la nueva versión es una Obra Maestra de la ciencia ficción. Ronald D. Moore hizo un increíble trabajo. Las siete colonias son destruidas por lo Cylons, maquinas creadas por el hombre que se rebelan. Los únicos sobrevivientes deben viajar en la vieja nave Battlestar Galactica, bajo el mando militar del Capitán Adama. Una serie que toco temas importantes como el terrorismo, el totalitarismo, la política y la religión, al mismo tiempo que disfrutábamos de sus batallas y los peligros que debían enfrentar, buscando un planeta llamado La Tierra. Yo hice una completa reseña opinión de esta serie, en este link la puedes leer. También tiene para mí, un final perfecto y unos personajes femeninos increíbles. Brindo por ti Kara “Starbuck” Thrace. Actualmente se prepara un Remake, a cargo de Sam Smail, el creador de Mr Robot y ha prometido respetar la esencia de la serie. No me agrada mucho la idea, es una obra que no debería ser tocada, pero al estar Smail detrás, le doy un voto de confianza.

6. The Shield

I must give this series the place it deserves. I think there are still a lot of people who haven't seen it. Vick Mackey, a corrupt cop, a character that would never have existed without the success of Tony Soprano. Another anti-hero. Vick commands an assault team in the police department of the fictional district of Farmington, in Los Angeles, where crime dominates the streets. Seven intense seasons, with a shattering finale, an ending in which there is no room for redemption. The use of the handheld camera places us in the action of each episode. Raw and surprising subplots. Movie stars like Glen Close and Forest Whitaker played incredible characters who tried to catch Vick. A must-see series, for lovers of the crime genre.

Debo darle a esta serie el puesto que se merece. Creo que todavía hay mucha gente que no la ha visto. Vick Mackey , un policía corrupto, un personaje que nunca hubiese existido sin el éxito de Tony Soprano. Otro antihéroe. Vick comanda un equipo de asalto en el departamento de policía del ficticio Distrito de Farmington en Los Ángeles, donde la delincuencia manda en las calles. Siete intensas temporadas, con un final que es demoledor, un final donde no hay lugar para la redención. El uso de cámara en mano, nos metía en la acción de cada episodio. Sub tramas crudas y sorprendente. Estrellas de cine como Glen Close y Forest Whitaker interpretaron increíbles personajes que intentaron atrapar a Vick. Una serie imprescindible, para los amantes del género criminal.

7. The X Files

A classic of science fiction, mystery and horror. Chris Carter created an incredible universe, where a Fox Mulder obsessed by the disappearance of his sister, who believes she was abducted by aliens, is assigned as a partner to Agent Dana Scully, who does not believe in UFOs or paranormal things. Memorable episodes with paranormal creatures and cases, I think it was the first series to have crowded forums in the early days of the internet. The X-Files became part of popular culture. It would take Duchovny almost a decade to shed the character when he premiered Californication. The series had two sisters, Milenniun and The Lone Gunmen, neither with the same success. After several movies, there has recently been a revival that brings back the mythical characters for new seasons.

Un Clásico de la ciencia ficción, misterio y terror. Chris Carter creó un increíble universo, donde un Fox Mulder obsesionado por la desaparición de su hermana, que cree fue abducida por extraterrestres, le es asignada como compañera la Agente Dana Scully, quien no cree en ovnis ni en cosas paranormales. Memorables episodios con criaturas y casos paranormales, creo que fue la primera serie que tuvo concurridos foros en los inicios de internet. Los expedientes X pasaron a ser parte de la cultura popular. Le costaría casi una década a Duchovny desprenderse del personaje cuando estreno Californication. La serie tuvo dos hermanas, Milenniun y Los Pistoleros Solitarios, ninguna con el mismo éxito. Después de varias películas, hace poco hubo un revival trayendo de regreso a los míticos personajes para nuevas temporadas.

8. Carnivale

A series ahead of its time. A masterpiece whose story was cut short. The series had only two seasons, until HBO decided to cancel it due to its low ratings. Today it is a cult work, a large part of the public of the time could not understand it. The adventures of a circus caravan in the years of the Great Depression, with a very religious plot, where the struggle between good and evil, the battle between God and Satan, was represented. Unsettling and unforgettable characters, a jewel that unfortunately could not have an ending as it deserved. A cancellation that hurt me a lot.

Una serie adelantada a su tiempo. Una obra maestra que vio truncada su historia, Solo dos temporadas tuvo la serie, hasta que HBO decidió cancelarla por los bajos índices de audiencia. Hoy día es una obra de culto, una gran parte del público de la época no pudo entenderla. Las aventuras de una Caravana de circo en los años de la gran depresión, con una trama con alta carga religiosa, donde se representaba la lucha entre el bien y el mal, la batalla entre Dios y Satanás. Personajes perturbadores e inolvidables, una joya que lamentablemente no pudo tener un final como se merecía. Una cancelación que me dolió mucho.

9. Deadwood

El género Western tiene su joya, también en HBO. Deadwood es una mezcla de personajes ficticios con personajes reales cuya trama transcurre en 1870, en ese pueblo llamado Deadwood. Grandes actores conformaron su elenco, algunos eran unos desconocidos y la serie les daría la fama y prestigio para otros proyectos. Anna Gunn , la que interpreto a l aodiada esposa de Walter White en Breaking Bad, aquí era la esposa de Seth Bullock. Robin Weigert impresionaría con su personaje Calamity Jane, el cual existió en la vida real. Pero quien se lucia era Ian McSahne como el despiadado Al Swearengen. Fue en esta serie donde quede cautivado por la actriz Kim Dickens interpretando a Joanie Stubbs. Fueron solo tres temporadas y tuvimos que esperar catorce años para que hicieran una película que cerraba definitivamente toda la historia.

10. Crematorio

I am not fair, it is a miniseries, because it only had one season. But it was a milestone in Spanish television, because it is such a high quality production, that from that moment on, in Spain they realized that they could make series in the style of the Americans and HBO. Adapted from a novel by Rafael Chiber, it tells the story of the Bertomeu family, whose patriarch Ruben is a successful businessman, the richest man in Misent, but who has made his fortune unethically. A story of corruption, crime and politics that deserves to be recognized for its excellent production and cast.

No soy justo, esta es una mini serie, porque tuvo solo una temporada. Pero fue un hito en la televisión española, porque es una producción de tan alta calidad, que a partir de ese momento, en España se dieron cuenta que podían hacer series al estilo de los americanos y HBO. Adaptación de una novela de Rafael Chiber, narra la historia de la familia Bertomeu, cuyo patriarca Rubén, es un exitoso empresario, el hombre más rico de Misent, pero que ha hecho su fortuna de forma poco ética. Una historia de corrupción, crimen y política que merece ser reconocida por su excelente realización y reparto.

11. Boardwall Empire

Produced by Martin Scorsese, behind this series is Terence Winter and a group of screenwriters who had worked together on The Sopranos. Based on the book Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City by Nelson Johnson, a character who existed in real life, but who in the series would be called Enoch "Nucky" Thompson and who narrates the creation of his empire, at the beginning of the prohibition era in the 1920s. Starring the excellent actor Steve Buscemi, there were five memorable seasons, where we saw versions of other real mobsters such as Al Capone, Meyer Lansky, Bugsy Siegel, Jhonny Torrio and Lucky Luciano. Actor Michael Shannon was Nelson Van Alden, before he became super famous. Michael Kenneth Williams gives us another amazing character, Albert "Chalky" White. But it is Jack Huston as Richard Harrow who would become my favorite. If you haven't seen this series yet, you are missing out on a fabulous crime chronicle.

Protagonizada por el excelente actor Steve Buscemi, fueron cinco memorables temporadas, donde vimos versiones de otros mafiosos reales como Al Capone, Meyer Lansky, Bugsy Siegel, Jhonny Torrio y Lucky Luciano. 12. Rome

The plan was to make five seasons, but the high production costs of the series and falling ratings meant it only had two seasons. However, the creators gave the series a worthy ending. The series showed the birth of the Roman Empire through the eyes of two characters, Lucius and Pullo, two friendly soldiers who fought alongside Julius Caesar. Made with great quality, they recreated the Rome of those times. Among my favorite characters is Atia of the Julii, played by Polly Walker. In the first season we see a teenage Octavian, who would become Emperor Augustus. The series had violence and sex, a series aimed at a completely adult audience. Absolutely recommended if you like these historical dramas, it has one of the best representations of the betrayal and assassination of Julius Caesar that I have seen in fiction.

El plan era hacer cinco temporadas, pero los altos costos de producción de la serie y una baja en los índices de audiencia, provocaron que solo tuviera dos temporadas. Pero los creadores le dan un final digno a la serie. La serie mostraba el nacimiento del imperio romano a través de los ojos de dos personajes, Lucio y Pullo, dos soldados amigos que lucharon al lado de Julio Cesar. Hecha con gran calidad, recrearon la roma de esos tiempos. Entre mis personajes favoritos esta Atia de los Julios, interpretado por Polly Walker. En la primera temporada vemos a un Octavio adolescente, que llegaría a ser el emperador Augusto. La serie tenia violencia y sexo, una serie dirigida a un público completamente adulto. Absolutamente recomendada si te gusta estos dramas históricos, tiene una de las mejores representaciones de la traición y asesinato a Julio Cesar que he visto en la ficción.

13. Spartacus

Inspired by the aesthetics of the movie 300, the fights and battles were a feast of blood. Four seasons, one of them was a prequel, because a tragedy occurred, the actor Andy Whitfield got cancer and died. The third and fourth seasons had to be played by Liam McIntyre. Creator Steven S. DeKnight delighted us with this story, where it was also the female characters that caught my attention. I will never forget Lucy Lawless, who people knew for being Xena, playing the evil Lucretia, nor the beautiful Ilithyia played by Viva Bianca. A great series with a spectacular ending.

La historia del gladiador que se rebelaría y desafiaría al imperio romano, pero con una alta dosis de violencia y sexo. Inspirándose en la estética de la película 300, las pelean y batallas eran un festín de sangre. Cuatro temporadas, una de ellas fue una pre cuela, porque ocurrió una tragedia, el actor Andy Whitfield enfermo de cáncer y murió. La tercera y cuarta temporada tuvo que ser interpretado por Liam McIntyre. El creador Steven S. DeKnight nos deleitaba con esta historia, donde también fueron los personajes femeninos los que llamaron mi atención. Jamás olvidare a Lucy Lawless, a quien la gente conocía por ser Xena, interpretando a la malvada Lucretia , ni a la bella Ilithyia interpretada por Viva Bianca. Una gran serie con un espectacular final.

14. Mad Men

The advertising industry is shown from the inside, machismo, prejudice, racism and all the problems, which seem to be still alive in that society, were treated in this piece of art created by Matthew Weiner. Here appears Kiernan Shipka, actress famous for starring in the recently completed adventure of Sabrina, the teenage witch, when she was just a child, playing the role of Don Draper's daughter. Seven seasons that I recommend if you want to watch a high quality series.

Ambientada enla Nueva york de la década de los sesenta, retrababa a la sociedad americana, a través del personaje Don Draper, un éxito ejecutivo que trabaja para una importante empresa de publicidad. Draper, un hombre hecho a si mismo, que esconde un secreto y mujeriego. Una época donde la mujer era relegada a un segundo plano, donde profesionalmente solo podía aspirar a ser secretaria. Pero Peggy Olson, personaje que lanzaría a la fama a Elizabeth Moss, estaba decidida a ir contra todas las normas sociales y convertirse en una gran creativa publicitaria. La industria de la publicidad es mostrada desde adentro, el machismo, los prejuicios, el racismo y todos los problemas, que aun parece estar vivos en esa sociedad, fueron tratados en esta pieza de arte creada por Matthew Weiner. Aquí aparece Kiernan Shipka, actriz famosa por protagonizar la recién finalizada Aventura de Sabrina, la bruja adolescente, cuando era solo una niña, hacia el rol de hija de Don Draper. Siete temporadas que recomiendo si quieres ver una serie de alta calidad.

15. Lost

The series that marked the beginning of the intense debates on the Internet about a series. Its pilot episode was the most expensive in history at the time. The series that kept me hooked, looking for explanations and making theories about all its mythology. I still remember how I raved about Jack yelling at Kate: We have to go back, we have to go back! Each episode left us with more questions, many of them would remain unanswered, as much as the creators say they had it all planned out, it got out of hand and they inserted so much nonsense that the last season was quite controversial. The audience was split between those who were satisfied with the ending and those who hate it. It made me spend incredible moments and that's how I remember it, as a great success. The unforgettable characters, like John Locke, make it one of my all time favorites.

La serie que marco el inicio de los intensos debates en internet sobre una serie. Su episodio piloto fue el más caro de la historia para ese entonces. La serie que mantuvo enganchado, buscando explicaciones y haciendo teorías sobre toda su mitología. Aun recuerdo como me quede delirando con Jack gritando a Kate: ¡Tenemos que Volver, Tenemos que volver!. Cada episodio nos dejaba más preguntas, muchas de ellas se quedarían sin respuestas, por mucho que los creadores digan que tenían todo planificado, se les fue de control y metieron tantas cosas sin sentido que la última temporada fue bastante polémica. La audiencia se dividió entre los que quedaron satisfechos con el final y los que lo odian. A mí me hizo pasar momento increíbles y así la recuerdo, como un gran éxito. Personajes inolvidables, como John Locke, la convierten en una de mis favoritas de todos los tiempos.
