With the designs of the black suit characteristic of Holmes, the actress Amanda Seyfried assumes the absolute protagonism of the miniseries, although some physical characteristics are very different from the real character, the choice of this actress seems to me right, because she has the same magnetism in the look, just like the real Holmes. You should also look at the gestures, the accent and the tone of voice that has been meticulously studied by the actress to do a job of great interpretative level.
It is a story that I knew very well because I read a lot about this case a few years ago and I also saw a documentary that I will talk about at the end of this post. It already seemed odd to me that they hadn't made a drama about the events. Although I have only seen five episodes and I know how the story ends, I find it just as fascinating as the first time I read about this financial scandal that showed the weaknesses and dark side of Silicon Valley.
Hulu, the streaming company has seized the moment, the trial took place in January this year, after many postponements (COVID, pregnancy, etc.) and has released the miniseries on the best date. I have to say that this company has been offering high quality original productions for some time, many of them adaptations of real events and this year is going like a rocket. My previous review was also of a Hulu production, Pam and Tommy, about the controversial Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee sex tape case.
Other streaming companies are on the wave of bringing to the screen miniseries about scandals and frauds that have affected the big financial spheres. For example, Netflix recently premiered Inventing Anna, of which I did my respective review and a few days ago I started watching the miniseries WeCrashed , available on Apple TV, about another fraud, that of the company WeWork. It seems to be a trend and surely the rest of the year we will see many other miniseries based on scandals, scams and frauds that shocked at the time.

Es una historia que conocía muy bien porque leí mucho sobre este caso hace unos años y también vi un documental del que hablaré al final de este post. Ya me parecía raro que no hubieran hecho una obra dramatica sobre los hechos. Aunque sólo he visto cinco episodios y sé cómo acaba la historia, me parece igual de fascinante que la primera vez que leí sobre este escándalo financiero que mostraba las debilidades y el lado oscuro de Silicon Valley.
Hulu, la empresa de streaming ha sabido aprovechar el momento, el juicio tuvo lugar en enero de este año, después de muchos aplazamientos (COVID, embarazo, etc.) y ha estrenado la miniserie en la mejor fecha. He de decir que esta empresa lleva tiempo ofreciendo producciones originales de gran calidad, muchas de ellas adaptaciones de hechos reales y este año va como un cohete. Mi anterior reseña fue también de una producción de Hulu, Pam y Tommy, sobre el polémico caso de la cinta sexual de Pamela Anderson y Tommy Lee.
Otras compañías de streaming están en la onda de llevar a la pantalla miniseries sobre escándalos y fraudes que han afectado a las grandes esferas financieras. Por ejemplo, Netflix estrenó recientemente Inventing Anna, de la que hice mi respectiva crítica y hace unos días comencé a ver la miniserie WeCrashed , disponible en Apple TV, sobre otro fraude, el de la empresa WeWork. Parece ser una tendencia y seguramente el resto del año veremos muchas otras miniseries basadas en escándalos, estafas y fraudes que impactaron en su momento.
Dreaming of the impossible
Many of us tell ourselves that we should always aim high, that we should dream big, that nothing is impossible and that we can achieve anything. There are millions of motivational phrases and even people who write books or give talks in which they emphasize that we can make everything we dream come true. But is it really feasible, and can we achieve everything? I think sometimes we get too high and blinded, we stop perceiving reality, it's the moment when our feet don't step on the ground.
That's what happened to Elizabeth Holmes, an entrepreneur who from a very young age was focused on achieving a goal. She wanted to be someone remembered, she wanted to be like those great characters who have revolutionized history with scientific and technological advances, her greatest references were Steve Jobs, whose style of dress she imitated, and Mark Zukenberg, whom she also copied for a while, always dressing the same so as not to waste time selecting clothes.
The documentary I saw a few years ago already showed this, and the miniseries also refers to the admiration he felt for those successful men who changed the world with their companies. From a very young age he took them as examples to follow, that's why he even adopted not only the way they dressed, but also the way they expressed themselves and even their gestures. I think she thought that by imitating them in these aspects she would achieve the same as them.
I have no doubt that at the beginning Elizabeth Holmes' idea had the best intentions. She was aiming high, she wanted to make it to the top, to be an inventor, to change the world. But the sad part of it all is that she stopped having her feet on the ground, she ignored all limitations. Dreaming of the impossible is not bad, nor is not giving up and keep trying. What is bad is to use lies to achieve the impossible.
Soñar con lo imposible
Muchos nos decimos que debemos apuntar siempre alto, que debemos soñar a lo grande, que nada es imposible y que podemos conseguirlo todo. Hay millones de frases motivacionales e incluso personas que escriben libros o dan charlas en las que hacen hincapié en que todo lo que soñamos lo podemos hacer realidad. Pero, ¿es realmente factible? ¿Podemos conseguirlo todo? Creo que a veces nos elevamos demasiado y nos cegamos, dejamos de percibir la realidad, es el momento en que nuestros pies no pisan el suelo.
Eso es lo que le ocurrió a Elizabeth Holmes, una emprendedora que desde muy joven se centró en alcanzar una meta. Quería ser alguien recordado, quería ser como esos grandes personajes que han revolucionado la historia con los avances científicos y tecnológicos, sus mayores referentes eran Steve Jobs, cuyo estilo de vestir imitaba, y Mark Zukenberg, a quien también copió durante un tiempo, vistiendo siempre igual para no perder el tiempo seleccionando ropa.
El documental que vi hace unos años ya lo mostraba y la miniserie también hace referencia a la admiración que sentía por esos hombres de éxito que cambiaron el mundo con sus empresas. Desde muy joven los tomó como ejemplos a seguir, por eso incluso adoptó no solo las formas de vestir, también las maneras de expresarse e incluso gesticulaciones. Creo que ella pensó que imitándolos en esos aspectos lograría lo mismo que ellos.
No me cabe duda de que al principio la idea de Elizabeth Holmes tenía las mejores intenciones. Apuntaba alto, quería llegar a la cima, ser una inventora, cambiar el mundo. Pero lo triste de todo esto es que dejó de tener los pies en el suelo, ignoró todas las limitaciones. Soñar con lo imposible no es malo, como tampoco lo es no rendirse y seguir intentándolo. Lo malo es utilizar la mentira para conseguir lo imposible.
Was it science fiction?
We have all seen science fiction movies that present us with technological advances that seem impossible to make a reality. Internet, cell phones, touch screens, virtual reality, cloning, are many advances that were first seen in science fiction stories, but with the accelerated technological development of the last decades, many of these gadgets and technologies are part of our reality.
But let's face it, there are still things that remain science fiction: teleportation, time travel, etc. There are boundaries of science that have not been crossed and perhaps our technology will need many decades or even centuries to make them a reality.
Elizabeth Holmes' dream was to create a small device that with just a small blood sample could do all the tests we wanted, determining our state of health and the diseases that might be afflicting us.
I am not a scientist, nor am I a doctor and I don't know much about biology and chemistry, but I do know that many blood tests require a significant amount of blood sample to be analyzed. There are kits that do basic analysis that get a lot of criticism because they supposedly give results with high margins of error. It seems that science is not yet so advanced that with a single drop of blood a machine can give you the results of all existing blood tests and even tell you what disease you have.
Followers of conspiracy theories may believe that such technology exists and that it is the big corporations that run the labs that keep everything hidden hahahaha. Seriously, I know there are people all over the world who may think that.
What Elizabeth Holmes wanted to do I've seen it in sci-fi movies, I even watched a series some time ago where with a device that they plug into the skin of the characters, they could do analysis of all kinds. But I think we still have a long time for that technology to develop.
Maybe Holmes saw that in a movie and we add to it that she didn't like having her blood taken, plus that determination to be someone beyond her limitations, led her to that key moment where she made the decision to invent something that would change the history of medicine. She was so sure that she would succeed, that she did not care about the years of research and all the failures in the tests, because she would gain time with the lie.
¿Era ciencia ficción?
Todos hemos visto películas de ciencia ficción que nos presentan avances tecnológicos que parecen imposibles de hacer realidad. Internet, los teléfonos móviles, las pantallas táctiles, la realidad virtual, la clonación, son muchos avances que se vieron por primera vez en las historias de ciencia ficción, pero con el acelerado desarrollo tecnológico de las últimas décadas, muchos de estos artilugios y tecnologías forman parte de nuestra realidad.
Pero hay que ser realistas, todavía hay cosas que siguen siendo ciencia ficción: tele transporte, viajes en el tiempo, etc. Hay límites de la ciencia que no se han cruzado y quizás nuestra tecnología necesite muchas décadas o incluso siglos para hacerlos realidad.
El sueño de Elizabeth Holmes era crear un pequeño aparato que con sólo una pequeña muestra de sangre pudiera hacer todos los análisis que quisiéramos, determinando nuestro estado de salud y las enfermedades que nos pudieran estar aquejando.
No soy científico, ni soy médico y no sé mucho de biología y química, pero sé que muchos análisis de sangre requieren una cantidad importante de muestra de sangre para ser analizada. Hay kits que hacen análisis básicos que reciben muchas críticas porque supuestamente dan resultados con altos márgenes de error. Parece que la ciencia aún no está tan avanzada como para que con una sola gota de sangre una máquina pueda darte los resultados de todos los análisis de sangre existentes e incluso decirte qué enfermedad tienes.
Los seguidores de las teorías conspirativas pueden creer que esa tecnología existe y que son las grandes corporaciones que dirigen los laboratorios las que mantienen todo oculto jajajaja. En serio, sé que hay gente en todo el mundo que puede pensar eso.
Lo que quería hacer Elizabeth Holmes lo he visto en películas de ciencia ficción, incluso vi una serie hace tiempo donde con un artefacto que se conectan en la piel de los personajes, podían hacer análisis de todo tipo. Pero creo que aún nos queda mucho tiempo para que esa tecnología se desarrolle.
Quizás Holmes vio eso en una película y le añadimos que no le gustaba que le sacaran sangre, además esa determinación de ser alguien más allá de sus limitaciones, la llevó a ese momento clave en el que tomó la decisión de inventar algo que cambiaría la historia de la medicina. Estaba tan segura de que tendría éxito, que no le importaron los años de investigación y todos los fracasos en las pruebas, porque ganaría tiempo con la mentira.
The face of lies
Young, smart and beautiful. Elizabeth Holmes was the perfect image to build one of the biggest lies of the technological world. At the beginning it was not easy, she was a very young woman in a world dominated by men, real wolves of high technology and investments. But if anything characterizes her, it is perseverance, not giving up, nothing and no one could stop her, she would build, with the advice of a very close person, the image we have of her today. She was so sure of achieving her goals that even she believed her own lies.
A big lie is built on other small lies. It starts with a tiny lie, which forms the base and then, on it, a great tower of lies is built, which sooner or later will become so heavy and difficult to hide, that it will lead to the collapse of that accumulation of deceptions.
She did not do it alone, her partner at the time had a great influence on the deception. Both would turn the Theranos company into the boom of the moment, investors contributed millions of dollars, hoping that this revolution in medical science would make them even richer. Here I must make a difference in the motivations of both parties, I think Holmes was thinking about the money, but to make the invention a reality, he wanted to do something that would make history. Now, the investors just wanted her to fulfill her plans so they could make money.
This does not justify fraud and deception. As I said in my post about the Inventing Anna miniseries. Fraud is wrong regardless of who the victims are and what their motivations were. The laws are clear and must be respected
Elizabeth Holmes became a multi-millionaire, interviews, magazine covers, TV shows, everyone believed and trusted what this woman promised would be one of the most important technological breakthroughs in modern medicine. Theranos was her, the security and her charm was the face of the lie.

Al principio no fue fácil, era una mujer muy joven en un mundo dominado por los hombres, auténticos lobos de la alta tecnología y las inversiones. Pero si algo la caracteriza, es la perseverancia, no rendirse, nada ni nadie podía detenerla, construiría, con el asesoramiento de una persona muy cercana, la imagen que hoy tenemos de ella. Estaba tan segura de lograr sus objetivos que hasta ella misma se creía sus propias mentiras.

Love
There is something that intrigues me in this whole affair and that is the figure of Ramesh "Sunny" Balwani. The Pakistani-born man who exerted too much influence over Elizabeth Holmes and was her partner for several years. What did she see in this man? Honestly, I think Balwani takes after me in being a lucky ugly guy. I don't understand how she, at only 18 or so, fell in love with a man twenty years older than her and, moreover, ugly.
This time I think there was love. She was from a well-to-do family, so she didn't need to look at a rich man. Holmes was focused on fulfilling her dream, so she asked her parents for all the money they had collected for her education and invested it in her project.
Her family was not dysfunctional, so I find no trauma in her nuclear family. Apparently there was an incident in his student days, is what they show in the miniseries, a serious event that perhaps was the trigger to seek protection, something that Balwani seemed to offer him.
The father figure was always present in Holmes' life. There were no absences, only the usual ones for work reasons. Could it be that his father was not a strong character? Because the love relationship he establishes with Balwani I perceive it more as a paternal relationship. He was an experienced man, too old for her, and exerted an influence similar to that of a father with his daughter.
The need for a strong figure, to support her, protect her and impose rules in her life. Fear of failure perhaps weighed on the man's words and direction. This is the explanation I find for the love and business relationship they formed. Or was it simply true love, that relationship seemed to be the only true thing in that web of lies.
Theranos
The company that began as a dream come true for several scientists and technology developers, evolved at the same time as Elizabeth Holmes. It went from being a paradise where everyone wanted to work and was happy to becoming a hell that everyone wanted to run away from.
Just like Holmes, who went from being the sweet young woman who had a wonderful relationship with all the staff, to becoming a distrustful woman, watching every step of the employees, isolating herself in her own world, seeking to reach the goal without caring about the suffering she might cause to others.
The darkest part of Theranos involves serious crimes of violation of financial laws, patents, fraud, violation of privacy, espionage, harassment and even death, because there was a person who, overwhelmed by the problems and lies, became a mortal victim of Theranos.
The miniseries will show us some of those facts, not as deep as I would have liked, but enough for us to keep some distance with the protagonist, making us reflect on the limits of Holmes and his evolution as an amoral character.
Amor
Hay algo que me intriga en todo este asunto y es la figura de Ramesh "Sunny" Balwani. El hombre de origen pakistaní que ejerció demasiada influencia sobre Elizabeth Holmes y fue su pareja durante varios años. ¿Qué vio ella en ese hombre? Sinceramente, creo que Balwani se parece a mí en lo de ser un feo con suerte. No me explico cómo ella, con sólo 18 años más o menos, se enamoró de un hombre veinte años mayor que ella y, además, feo.
Esta vez creo que sí hubo amor. Ella era de una familia acomodada, así que no necesitaba fijarse en un hombre rico. Holmes estaba centrada en cumplir su sueño, así que pidió a sus padres todo el dinero que habían reunido para su educación y lo invirtió en su proyecto.
Su familia no era disfuncional, por lo que no encuentro ningún trauma en su núcleo familiar. Al parecer hubo un incidente en su época de estudiante, es lo que muestran en la miniserie, un suceso grave que quizás fue el detonante para buscar protección, algo que Balwani parecía ofrecerle.
La figura paterna siempre estuvo presente en la vida de Holmes. No había ausencias, sólo las habituales por motivos de trabajo. ¿Será que su padre no era un personaje fuerte? Porque la relación amorosa que establece con Balwani la percibo más como una relación paternal. Era un hombre experimentado, demasiado mayor para ella, y ejercía una influencia similar a la de un padre con su hija.
La necesidad de una figura fuerte, que la apoyara, la protegiera y le impusiera reglas en su vida. El miedo al fracaso tal vez pesaba sobre las palabras y la dirección del hombre. Esta es la explicación que encuentro para la relación de amor y de negocios que formaron. O fue simplemente amor verdadero, esa relación parecía ser lo único verdadero en esa red de mentiras.
Theranos
La empresa que comenzó como un sueño hecho realidad para varios científicos y desarrolladores de tecnología, evolucionó al mismo tiempo que Elizabeth Holmes. Pasó de ser un paraíso donde todos querían trabajar y eran felices a convertirse en un infierno del que todos querían huir.
Al igual que Holmes, que pasó de ser la joven dulce que tenía una relación maravillosa con todo el personal, a convertirse en una mujer desconfiada, vigilando cada paso de los empleados, aislándose en su propio mundo, buscando alcanzar la meta sin importarle el sufrimiento que pudiera causar a los demás.
La parte más oscura de Theranos implica graves delitos de violación de las leyes financieras, de patentes, de fraude, de violación de la intimidad, de espionaje, de acoso e incluso de muerte, porque hubo una persona que, abrumada por los problemas y las mentiras, fue víctima mortal de Theranos.
La miniserie nos mostrará algunos de esos hechos, no tan profundos como me hubiera gustado, pero lo suficiente para que mantengamos cierta distancia con la protagonista, haciéndonos reflexionar sobre los límites de Holmes y su evolución como personaje amoral.
The documentary
In case you don't have time to watch the miniseries, I urge you then to enjoy the documentary that premiered on HBO in 2019, directed by a filmmaker specialized in documentary works: Alex Gibney. The documentary delves into the Theranos case in an entertaining way and features statements from the people whose pleasant dreams turned into nightmares inside Theranos. I also recommend this documentary to those who watch the miniseries, it will serve as a complement to get a broader view of the whole thing.
El documental
En caso de que no tengas tiempo de ver la miniserie, te insto entonces a disfrutar del documental que se estrenó en HBO en 2019, dirigido por un cineasta especializado en trabajos documentales: Alex Gibney. El documental profundiza de manera entretenida sobre el caso Theranos y cuenta con declaraciones de las personas cuyos agradables sueños se convirtieron en pesadillas dentro de Theranos. También recomiendo este documental a quienes vean la miniserie, les servirá como complemento para tener una visión más amplia de todo el asunto.
The Dropout is another excellent Hulu production, currently airing. I'm on the fifth episode and it's keeping me hooked. It doesn't matter if you know the story or not. The cast is fantastic and the story is well documented, a miniseries worth watching and one that along with Pam & Tommy I hope will be recognized at this year's American TV awards ceremonies.
The miniseries is created by Elizabeth Meriwether, something that caused me surprise, this showrunner is more known for creating comedy productions, but this dramatic production is very well written, of course it has a team of more than ten screenwriters. In addition, the source material is an excellent podcast by journalist Rebecca Jarvis, which received award nominations in the year it aired. With that material and all the documentation that exists on the case, they have created an entertaining product with a lot of relevant information about the case.

The Dropout es otra excelente producción de Hulu, actualmente en emisión. Voy por el quinto episodio y me mantiene enganchado. No importa si conoces la historia o no. El reparto es fantástico y la historia está bien documentada, una miniserie que merece la pena ver y que junto con Pam & Tommy espero que sea reconocida en las ceremonias de premios de la televisión americana de este año.
La miniserie está creada por Elizabeth Meriwether, algo que me causó sorpresa, esta showrunner es más conocida por crear producciones de comedia, pero esta producción dramática está muy bien escrita, por supuesto cuenta con un equipo de más de diez guionistas. Además, el material original es un excelente podcast realizado por la periodista Rebecca Jarvis, que recibió nominaciones a premios en el año en que se emitió. Con ese material y toda la documentación que existe sobre el caso, han creado un producto entretenido y con mucha información relevante sobre el caso.
