This week I am going to recommend two films in the horror genre. One is Argentinian and the other Australian. Both are worth seeing.
Esta semana voy a recomendar dos películas del género de terror. Una es argentina y la otra australiana. Ambas merecen la pena ser vistas.
WHEN EVIL LURKS
It was released last year and I saw it a few months ago. All the positive reviews it had received at the festivals where it was shown and received awards, are completely justified. It is one of the best horror films released recently.
It is directed by the Argentinian filmmaker Demián Rugna, who had already impressed critics several years ago with his film Aterrados. If that film showed her talent for telling scary stories, with Cuando Acecha la Maldad she has achieved international acclaim. He is a filmmaker who has always been committed to the horror genre. Unfortunately I have not been able to find his older works, it has been difficult for me, but horror fans in that country have seen them and know the filmmaker's trajectory.
The story revolves around the brothers Pedro and Damián, they are farm workers, the setting is rural. The remains of a corpse appear in strange circumstances in the field, which leads them to discover that there is a man possessed by something evil, they refer to him as El Encarnado (The Incarnate One). As the discovery spreads and they try to solve the problem, evil takes over the whole area and it may be that in trying to escape it, the demonic force reaches a larger town.
I love films that make me feel an emotion and this one has several sequences in which the tension is handled to perfection. Fear, intrigue, disgust. It's a fairly visceral rural horror film that isn't afraid to put itself on display to thrill the viewer.
The cast will be unfamiliar to most and that's a plus for the story. There are some who are recurrent in the filmmaker's productions and others I recognise from Argentine films I have seen. I liked the performance of the main actor Ezequiel Rodríguez, who I had seen years ago in a youth series I watched with my daughter, called Soy Luna. I think he is an actor with a lot of experience in soap operas and that's why I liked the change of acting register with this horror film. Apparently it is inspired by Argentinian rural legends that talk about El Encarnado, I didn't have time to look for information about it, but you can do it if you like.
Se estrenó el año pasado y yo la vi hace unos meses. Todas las críticas positivas que había recibido en los festivales donde se exhibió y recibió premios, están completamente justificadas. Es una de las mejores películas de terror estrenadas recientemente.
Está dirigida por la cineasta argentino Demián Rugna, que ya había impresionado a la crítica hace varios años con su película Aterrados. Si aquella película puso de manifiesto su talento para contar historias de miedo, con Cuando Acecha la Maldad alcanza la consagración internacional. Es un cineasta que siempre ha apostado por el género de terror. Lamentablemente no he podido encontrar sus obras más antiguas, me ha sido difícil, pero los aficionados al terror de ese país las han visto y conocen la trayectoria del cineasta.
La historia gira en torno a los hermanos Pedro y Damián, son trabajadores del campo, el escenario es rural. Los restos de un cadáver aparecen en extrañas circunstancias en el terreno, lo que les lleva a descubrir que hay un hombre poseído por algo maligno, se refieren a él como El Encarnado. A medida que el descubrimiento se extiende y tratan de solucionar el problema, el mal se apodera de toda la zona y puede que al tratar de escapar de él, la fuerza demoníaca llegue a un pueblo mas grande.
Me encantan las películas que me hacen sentir una emoción y ésta tiene varias secuencias en las que la tensión está manejada a la perfección. Miedo, intriga, asco. Es una película de terror rural bastante visceral que no tiene miedo a exhibirse para estremecer al espectador.
El reparto será desconocido para la mayoría y eso es un punto a favor de la historia. Hay algunos que son recurrentes en las producciones del cineasta y otros que reconozco de películas argentinas que he visto. Me gustó la actuación del actor principal Ezequiel Rodríguez, a quien había visto hace años en una serie juvenil que veía con mi hija, llamada Soy Luna. Creo que es un actor con mucha experiencia en telenovelas y por eso me gustó el cambio de registro actoral con esta película de terror. Al parecer está inspirada en leyendas rurales argentinas que hablan de El Encarnado, no tuve tiempo de buscar información al respecto, pero ustedes pueden hacerlo si gustan.
LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL
The Cairnes brothers. Cameron and Colin. They have achieved great notoriety within the circle where horror films are handled. I haven't seen any previous work by these Australians, but they deserve all the praise they have received for their film Late Night with the Devil. It is considered one of the best horror films of the year and I agree.
This film is also important because of the way the filmmakers make the viewer feel the sense of dread. The atmosphere is paramount. It is set in the seventies, specifically in a special programme of a famous Late Show, on the occasion of Halloween. The aesthetics of the film are designed to make it seem as if we are watching the scenes of that fateful night on that television programme.
Jack Delroy is a TV star, his show is the most popular, but after a family tragedy, everything seems to go wrong and he needs to get his career back on track. Everything depends on this live show for Halloween. Among the guests is someone who claims to be psychic and communicate with the dead. Also invited is a man who refutes all things supernatural. The juiciest segment will be when a young woman appears who appears to be possessed by a demon. Are they all charlatans or is there an evil force about to emerge that night?
Actor David Dastmalchian does the best work of his film career. He is an actor who has been a supporting actor in many films. Several of them blockbusters, such as Marvel's Ant Man (and others). I remember him for small roles in several films, but mostly for his Polka Dot Man in James Gunn's Suicide Squad. Now, it's his turn to be the main protagonist and the one who is almost always on screen, playing Delroy, the show's entertainer. Without being a star or a well-known actor, he has managed to pull off the job with flying colours. Hopefully he will be considered more for bigger roles in other productions. I believe another film featuring the actor will be released this year, also in the supernatural horror genre, directed by a Colombian filmmaker.
The rest of the cast is mostly Australian. Laura Gordon and Ingrid Torelli, as Dr. June Ross and the young possessed Lilly, also stand out. I have not seen actor Michael Ironside, who has worked in major productions in the past and has excelled in villain roles. Here he plays the character who disavows all things paranormal and has a logical explanation for what happens in the show that night.
Los hermanos Cairnes. Cameron y Colin. Han alcanzado gran notoriedad dentro del círculo donde se manejan las películas de terror. No he visto ningún trabajo anterior de estos australianos, pero se merecen todos los elogios que han recibido por su película Late Night with the Devil. Está considerada como una de las mejores películas de terror del año y estoy de acuerdo.
Esta película también es importante por la forma en que los directores hacen que el espectador sienta la sensación de miedo. La atmósfera es primordial. Está ambientada en los años setenta, concretamente en un programa especial de un famoso Late Show, con motivo de Halloween. La estética de la película está trabajada para que parezca que estamos viendo las escenas de esa fatídica noche en ese programa de televisión.

El actor David Dastmalchian realiza el mejor trabajo de su carrera cinematográfica. Es un actor que ha sido secundario en muchas películas. Varias de ellas superproducciones, como Ant Man de Marvel (y otras). Yo lo recuerdo por pequeños papeles en varias películas, pero sobre todo por su Polka Dot Man en Escuadrón Suicida de James Gunn. Ahora, lo toca ser el protagonista principal y el que casi siempre está en pantalla, interpretando a Delroy, el animador del show. Sin ser una estrella ni un actor muy conocido, ha conseguido sacar adelante el trabajo con nota. Esperemos que se le tenga más en cuenta para papeles más importantes en otras producciones. Creo que este año se estrenará otra película con el actor, también del género de terror sobrenatural, dirigida por un cineasta colombiano.
El resto del reparto es mayoritariamente australiano. Destacan también Laura Gordon e Ingrid Torelli, como la doctora June Ross y la joven poseída Lilly. No he visto al actor Michael Ironside, que ha trabajado en grandes producciones en el pasado y ha destacado en papeles de villano. Aquí interpreta al personaje que reniega de todo lo paranormal y tiene una explicación lógica para lo que ocurre en en el show de es noche.
Two works of the genre that are among the best I've seen lately. I invite you to look them up on your streaming service and enjoy them. You can do a double session and watch them in one night, but don't do it alone.
