When a month ago I participated in a challenge about the programs we liked in our childhood, there was one that I left out, because I only had to name two programs. Of all my favorite programs, I think the one I am going to review, influenced me a lot and defines the kind of programs that I like and that are important for children.
Television is synonymous with entertainment, all programs have as their main function to entertain people, it is what increases audiences, making advertisers (companies) invest in advertising on television channels. Therefore, finding educational programs is a difficult task, because they do not generate much audience.
Lazy Town is a program that is part of my happiest time, when I was a simple child, but the most surprising thing is that it was very successful all over the world, demonstrating that it was possible to do something entertaining, but at the same time educational and with an important message about maintaining good health.
Cuando participe hace un mes en el reto sobre los programas que nos gustaron en la infancia, hubo uno que deje por fuera, porque solo había que nombrar dos programas. De todos mis tv shows favoritos, creo que el que voy a reseñarles, influyo mucho en mi y define el tipo de programas que me gustan y creo son importantes para los niños.La televisión es sinónimo de entretenimiento, todos los programas tienen como función principal entretener a las personas,es lo que aumenta las audiencias, haciendo que los anunciantes (empresas) inviertan en publicidad en los canales de televisión. Por eso, encontrar programas educativos se hace tarea difícil, porque no generan mucha audiencia.
Lazy Town es un programa que forma parte de mi etapa más feliz, cuando era una niña, pero lo más sorprendente es que tuvo mucho éxito en el mundo entero, demostrando que se podía hacer algo entretenido, pero al mismo tiempo educativo y con un mensaje importante: mantener buena salud.
LAZY TOWN
At that time I was a child and did not know what Lazy meant in my language. The English translation is Ciudad Perezosa. As the name says, the inhabitants of the town lead an unhealthy life, they don't like natural foods, they don't like to play sports. Stephanie, the girl protagonist of the show, encourages them to leave that sedentary life. The mayor of the city always asked for help to the city guard, Sportacus, he saw him as a kind of superhero, he did incredible acrobatics, a super athlete. Together with Stephanie they always guarded the city from Robbie Rotten, the laziest man in the world who wants everyone in the city to be lazy. Robbie Rotten is the bad character, he lives under the town and is always planning bad things so that he will run Sportacus out of town and laziness will dominate all the inhabitants.
En ese tiempo yo era una niña y no sabía lo que significaba Lazy en mi idioma. La traducción al español es Ciudad Perezosa. Como bien lo dice su nombre, los habitantes de la ciudad llevan una vida poco saludable, no les gusta los alimentos naturales, no les gusta hacer deportes. Stephanie , la niña protagonista del programa, los incentiva a dejar esa vida sedentaria. El alcalde de la ciudad siempre solicita ayuda al guardia de la ciudad, Sportacus. Yo lo veía como una especie de súper héroe, hacia increíbles acrobacias, un súper atleta. Junto a Stephanie siempre cuidaban la ciudad de Robbie Rotten, el hombre más perezoso del mundo y que quiere que todos en el pueblo sean perezosos. Robbie Rotten es el personaje malo, vive debajo de la ciudad y siempre está planeando cosas malas para que correr a Sportacus del pueblo y la pereza pueda dominar a todos.
I'm not aware of the new shows airing on Discovery Kids, I know there are many that maintain a balance between fun and education. But I don't know if there is anything like Lazy Town. Only three characters were played by actors, the other townspeople are dolls. I loved those figures, I wondered how they made them move their lips and they were all very funny. But the most important thing was the message it left us with, keep a healthy diet and do sports.
There must be thousands of similar ideas for TV programs, but surely most of them are rejected by the big TV networks in most countries. Education and television does not seem to be a good combination for success, but programs like Lazy Town and Dora the Explorer, to name a few, have shown that it can be done with good audience results.
No estoy al tanto de las nuevos shows que se transmiten en Discovery Kids, se que existen muchos que mantienen equilibrio entre diversión y educación. Pero no sé si existe algo parecido a Lazy Town. Solo tres personajes eran interpretados por actores, los demás habitantes del pueblo son muñecos. Me encantaban esas figuras, me preguntaba como hacían para que movieran los labios y todos eran muy divertidos. Pero lo más importante era el mensaje que nos dejaba, mantener una alimentación saludable y hacer deportes.
Deben existir miles de ideas similares para programas de televisión, pero seguramente la mayoría es rechazada por las grandes cadenas de televisión de la mayoría de los países. Educación y Televisión no parece ser una buena combinación para el éxito, pero programas como Lazy Town y Dora la Exploradora, por nombrar otro, han demostrado que si se puede hacer con buenos resultados de audiencia.
The influence of the program
There were many girls and boys who watched the show, in my country it was a success, I remember that at carnival time there were many girls dressed up as Estefania, I had classmates who celebrated their birthday with everything decorated like Lazy Town. My mother bought me the Estefania wig, because I loved pink hair. I would sing and dance along watching the show. What I didn't do were the acrobatics, they were too hard for me and I might hit myself if I tried.
I had a chubby build and that's why I think it's the show that had a lot of influence on me. It was a time when I sometimes felt bad at school, those of you who have had overweight problems know how cruel other girls can be, let alone boys.
I can say that Lazy Town encouraged me to learn about healthy eating and exercise, something I started to do when I became a teenager, overcoming a bit all the problems of being overweight, although I'm still chubby, but I'm not worried about what others will say, I try to maintain a balanced diet, but sometimes the craving for chocolate or a hamburger can more.
La influencia del programa
Eran muchas las niñas y niños que veían el programa, en mi país fue un éxito, recuerdo que en la época de carnaval habían muchas niñas disfrazadas de Stephanie, tuve compañeras de clase que celebraron su cumpleaños con todo adornado de Lazy Town. Mi mamá me compro la peluca de Stephanie, porque me encantaba el cabello rosado. Yo cantaba y bailaba viendo el programa. Lo que no hacia eran las acrobacias, eran muy difíciles para mí y me podía dar un golpe si lo intentaba.
Yo era de contextura rellenita y por eso creo que el programa tuvo mucha influencia en mí. Fue una época en que a veces me sentía mal en la escuela, las que han tenido problemas de sobrepeso, saben cómo pueden ser crueles otras niñas y ni hablar de los varones.
Puedo decir que Lazy Town me incentivo a aprender sobre comer de forma saludable y hacer ejercicios, algo que comencé a hacer cuando entre a la adolescencia, superando un poco todos los problemas de sobrepeso, aunque todavía soy rellenita, pero ya no me preocupa lo que digan los demás, intento mantener una dieta balanceada, pero a veces puede más el antojo del chocolate o una hamburguesa.
Stephanie
She was my favorite character, I think all the girls who watched the series wanted to be like her. She was pretty, smart, sang, danced, did acrobatics and had a beautiful gaze. She was the pink girl and I loved her hair, I think I still have the wig, it must be stored at my mother's house. Another of Stephanie's characteristics is that she always had a positive mindset, helping her friends and Sportacus. She is supportive and kind, being another good message to children about how to act in life.
Era mi personaje favorito, creo que todas las niñas que veíamos el programa queríamos ser como ella. Era linda, inteligente, cantaba, bailaba, hacia acrobacias y tenía un look hermoso. Era la niña Pink y me encantaba su cabello, creo que aún conservo la peluca, debe estar guardada en casa de mi madre. Otro de las características de Stephanie es que siempre tenía mentalidad positiva, ayudando a sus amigos y a Sportacus. Es solidaria y amable, otro buen mensaje dirigido a los niños de cómo se deben comportar en la vida.
The two Estephanie
When I was addicted to watching the series, it was the time when Stepahie was played by Julianna Rose Mauriello, she was the best during the first two seasons of the series. When I remember Stephanie, I see her face. The actress is from the United States, but has stayed away from the television industry. I googled and found nothing new.
The following seasons Stephanie was played by Chloe Lang, in this etpa of the series I had grown up , I was still watching the series, but something changed, it was a very abrupt change for me, to see Stephanie with a new face. The actress is American, she is a dancer and singer, but after Lazy Town she hasn't done anything else.
Cuando yo estuve adicta al programa, fue la etapa en que Stepahie era interpretada por Julianna Rose Mauriello, ella fue la mejor durante las primeras dos temporadas del show. Cuando recuerdo a Stephanie , veo es su cara. La actriz es de Estados Unidos, pero se ha mantenido alejada de la televisión. Busque en Google y no encontré nada nuevo.
Las siguientes temporadas Stephanie fue interpretada por Chloe Lang, en esta etapa del show yo había crecido , todavía veía el show, pero algo cambio, fue un cambio muy brusco para mi, ver a Stephanie con un nuevo rostro. Sportacus
The super hero of the series, he goes to bed early, to get up with lots of energy and do sports. He lives in a blue ship, like the uniform he wears, all blue. One of his powers is that he has a lot of speed when running and a crystal in his chest warns him when someone needs his help. Always ready to save people from the evil plans of Robbie Rotten. The actor who plays him is Magnus Scheving, but something I found out much later, is that he is the creator of the series, he invested his own money to get the series off the ground and it was very successful. He is Gymnanstic and he had the idea of creating a children's program that would educate children in sports and good nutrition. An entrepreneur to be admired.
El súper héroe del programa, se acuesta temprano, para levantarse con mucha energía y hacer deportes. Vive en una nave Azul, como el uniforme que viste, todo azul. Uno de sus poderes es que tiene mucha velocidad al correr y un cristal que tiene en el pecho le alerta cuando alguien necesita de su ayuda. Siempre dispuesto a salvar al pueblo de los malvados planes de Robbie Rotten. El actor que lo interpreta es Magnús Scheving, pero algo que me entere mucho tiempo después, es que es el creador del show, invirtió de su propio dinero para que el programa se hiciera realidad y tuvo mucho éxito. Es gimnasta y fue su idea de crear un programa infantil que educara a los niños en deporte y buena alimentación. Un emprendedor digno de admiración.
Robbie Rotten
He is the opposite of Sportacus, he is the king of laziness, he only likes to watch TV and eat badly. He is always thinking about what to do so that everyone in the city is like him, lazy. Just like he was before Stephanie and Sportacus started educating the townspeople about sports and good nutrition. He's the bad guy in the show, but he was hilarious, I laughed a lot at his face and the gestures he made.
He rest in peace
The bad news is that the actor who played him, Stefán Karl Stefánsson passed away in 2018, aged just 43, from cancer. When I heard that news online, I was very sad, I remembered how funny his character was.
Es todo lo contrario a Sportacus, es el rey de la pereza, solo le gusta ver televisión y comer mal. Siempre está pensando que hacer para que todos en el pueblo sean como él , unos perezosos. Tal como era antes de que Stephanie y Sportacus comenzaran a educar a los chicos sobre el deporte y la buena alimentación. Es el malo del show, pero era muy divertido, me daba mucha risa su cara y los gestos que ponía.
Que descanse en paz
La mala noticia es que el actor que lo interpretaba, Stefán Karl Stefánsson murió en el 2018, con apenas 43 años, a causa del cáncer. Cuando me entere de esa noticia por internet, me puse muy triste, me recordé de lo gracioso que era su personaje.
Ziggy, Pixel, Trixie, Styngy, Milford and Bessie
They were the other main characters in the program, each with a distinct personality. One is very gluttonous and can easily fall into laziness. Another is a bit pretentious for being the rich kid in town, Pixel loves video games and anything to do with technology. Trixie would spend the day on a skateboard, she is mischievous, smart and is friends with Stephanie. The mayor always wants the best for the town and is a good person. Everyone was part of that colorful town, getting involved in all the adventures in every episode of the series.
Eran los otros personajes principales del programa, cada uno con una personalidad dsitinta. Uno es muy glotón y puede caer fácilmente en la pereza. Otro es un poco pretencioso por ser el niño rico del pueblo, a Pixel le encantan los videojuegos y todo lo relacionado con la tecnología. Trixie se pasaba el día en un monopatín, es traviesa, inteligente y se hace miga de Stephanie. El alcalde siempre quiere lo mejor para el pueblo y es una buena persona. Todos eran parte de ese pueblo lleno de color, involucrándose en todas las aventuras de cada episodio del show.
Made in Iceland
The two girls who played Sptephanie were from the United States, but Sportacus and Robbie Rotten were from Iceland. The series was produced entirely in Iceland, which is far north of Europe, and where it is very cold. Something that contrasts with the city of Lazy Town, where the weather is always nice. I don't know if I'm wrong, but Lazy Town must be the most successful international program produced in Iceland.
The importance of sport and nutrition
It was the main message of the program, to educate about sport and nutrition, through fun, to children. Healthy body, healthy mind. We are becoming more and more sedentary and often eat poorly, children love junk food, soft drinks, overeating sweets. The advertising of these products is aimed at children, that is why in many countries there are problems of obesity and the diseases it causes.
I am not saying that eating sweets or pizza is bad, but we should do it in moderation, not in excess. The best thing is to maintain a good diet, with fruits, vegetables and proteins. Avoid consuming a lot of sweets and most importantly, do sports, or at least walk.
All this was the message conveyed by Lazy Town and, in my case, it helped me. There is a need for more programs like Lazy Town, so that children grow up watching something educational in a fun way.
Hecha en Islandia
Las dos chicas que interpretaron a Sptephanie eran de Estados Unidos, pero Sportacus y Robbie rotten eran de Islandia. El show fue producido completamente en ese país, que está ubicado muy al norte de Europa, y donde hace mucho frio. Algo que contrasta con el pueblo de Lazy Town donde siempre hace buen clima. No sé si me equivoco, pero Lazy Town debe ser el programa más exitoso a nivel internacional, hecho en Islandia.
La importancia del deporte y la alimentación
Era el mensaje principal del programa, educar sobre el deporte y la alimentación, a través de la diversión, a los niños. En cuerpo sano, mente sana. Cada vez mantenemos una vida sedentaria y nos alimentamos muchas veces mal, a los niños les encanta la comida chatarra, los refrescos, comer dulces en exceso. La publicidad de esos productos va dirigida a los niños, por eso en muchos países hay problemas de obesidad y las enfermedades que ella produce.
No estoy diciendo que comer dulces o pizza este mal, pero debemos hacerlo con moderación, no en exceso. Lo mejor es mantener una buena alimentación, con frutas, vegetales y proteínas. Evitar consumir muchos dulces y lo más importante, hacer deporte, o por lo menos, caminar.
Todo eso era el mensaje que transmitía Lazy Town y que en mi caso, fue de ayuda. Hacen falta más programas como Lazy Town, para que los niños crezcan viendo algo educativo de forma divertida
