Hello everyone, fans of good stories, I hope you're feeling great today. This time I want to share a new review with you all, and it's that I rewatched a movie that, ugh... today we're going to talk about: Her... seriously, it's one of those movies that stays in your head, you know? It came out back in 2013, it was directed by Spike Jonze, and I'll be honest, the first time I saw it, it left me kind of... weird... really weird, the kind of weird that makes you think. It left me with a crazy mix of feeling a little alone, but also with a strange hope... I know, it sounds contradictory, but that's exactly what's great about this movie... it hits you differently depending on where you're at in your life when you watch it. So, what's it about? Let’s see, if I tell you this just like that, it might sound a bit crazy, almost silly if you read the synopsis. It takes place in Los Angeles, in a future that feels close, with slightly more advanced technology, everything with a cleaner vibe, but that you still recognize… we follow Theodore Twombly, played by Joaquin Phoenix… what a great actor… and well, Theodore is having a really bad time… he’s a super sensitive guy, who’s dealing with the end of his marriage, a long one.
He’s like stuck, emotionally paralyzed, like floating through life without knowing where to go. You see him walking among people, all glued to their devices, and he looks super isolated, even though he’s surrounded by a bunch of people… and his work, listen to the irony! He works for a company called “Beautiful Handwritten Letters . com,” where he writes incredibly personal and emotional letters for other people: their husbands, kids, dads... I mean, the guy can connect and put other people’s feelings into words in an incredible way, but for his own life… zero! He can’t handle his own life; he lives trapped in memories of his ex, Catherine, reliving those super warm, sunny past moments that contrast sharply with his dull, grey present. You can even see that in the movie itself: at first, it’s very cold, blue, and grey tones... the camera gets really close to his face, showing all his vulnerability, his sadness. Suddenly, bam! They step back and you see him tiny in the middle of a huge city, so you can really feel how small and alone he feels. There’s a moment when he says something like, “I think I’ve felt everything I’m going to feel.” It breaks your heart! Do you know that feeling of being emotionally devastated, of thinking the best is over? I do, haha, it happened to me.
Hola a todos, fanáticos de las buenas historias, espero que hoy se encuentren genial, en esta ocasión hoy les quiero compartir a todos ustedes una nueva reseña, y es volví a ver una peli que uff… hoy hablaremos de: Her.. en serio, es de esas que se te quedan dando vueltas en la cabeza, ¿saben? Salió por allá en 2013, la dirigió Spike Jonze, y les soy sincero, la primera vez que la vi, me dejó medio… raro.. pero raro bien, de ese raro que te pone a pensar, me dejó con una mezcla loca de sentirme un poquito solo, pero también como con una esperanza extraña… ya sé, suena contradictorio, pero justo eso es lo genial de esta película.. te pega distinto dependiendo de en qué andes en tu vida cuando la ves. Entonces, ¿de qué se trata? A ver, si se los cuento así nomás, capaz suena medio fumado, casi tonto si lees la sinopsis, pasa en Los Ángeles, en un futuro que se siente cerquita, con tecnología un poquito más avanzada, todo con una onda más limpia, pero que igual reconoces.. seguimos a Theodore Twombly, que lo hace Joaquin Phoenix… qué actorazo.. y bueno, Theodore la está pasando muy mal.. es un tipo súper sensible, que está lidiando con el fin de su matrimonio, uno largo.
Está como atascado, paralizado emocionalmente, como flotando por la vida sin saber pa' dónde ir, lo ves caminando entre la gente, todos pegados a sus aparatos, y él se ve súper aislado, aunque esté rodeado de banda de personas.. y su trabajo escuchen la ironía! trabaja para una empresa que se llama algo como “Cartas Bonitas Escritas a Mano . com”, donde él escribe cartas súper personales y emotivas para otra gente: para sus esposos, hijos, papás.. o sea, el tipo puede conectar y poner en palabras los sentimientos de los demás de una forma increíble, pero para su propia vida… ¡cero! No puede manejar lo suyo, vive atrapado en los recuerdos de su ex, Catherine, reviviendo esos momentos pasados súper cálidos, llenos de sol, que contrastan un montón con su presente todo gris y apagado, y eso se nota hasta en cómo se ve la peli: al principio, mucho tono frío, azules, grises.. la cámara se le pega mucho a la cara, mostrándote toda su vulnerabilidad, su tristeza, de repente, ¡zas! Toman distancia y lo ves chiquitito en medio de la ciudad enorme, para que sientas de verdad lo pequeño y solo que se siente. Hay un momento en que dice algo como: "Creo que ya sentí todo lo que voy a sentir"... te parte el corazón! ¿Ubican esa sensación de estar hecho bolsa emocionalmente, de pensar que lo mejor ya fue? Yo si jaja, me pasó.
Well, the thing is, Theodore is lonely, but only in capital letters, very depressed... he tries to go out with people, he has friends like Amy, who care and give him good vibes, but the guy is like blocked, there's no way, he hits a wall. So, one day he sees an ad for a new Operating System, an Artificial Intelligence, basically, they sell it as the first one that truly understands and listens to you, knows you... the guy, kind of intrigued, or maybe just desperate for something different, boom!, buys it. He chooses a woman's voice, and names himself Samantha... here, my people, is where the movie could have gone down the drain, but no, not at all. Samantha, who has the incredible voice of Scarlett Johansson, is super warm, intelligent, has like a thousand twists... she's not a little robot assistant and that's it... she's curious, funny, kind and even seems to feel things.
At first, obviously, the interaction is kind of weird. Theodore is like, "Can a computer laugh? Can it feel something?" That's what we'd all think, right? But Samantha is so sparky, so eager to learn about the world and what it's like to be human, that the connection between them starts to feel... real, but very, very real... look, seeing that relationship grow is, I swear, one of the most brilliant and... natural! ways of showing how people bond that I've seen in film... it doesn't happen overnight, right? It builds little by little, with conversations, inside jokes, those conversations that last for hours at night, walking around the city together (with Theodore carrying the gadget, obviously)... he starts to open up to her in a way he couldn't with anyone else; she helps him see everything through different eyes, she pushes him to enjoy things again. Remember how I told you about the cool colors at the beginning?
Well, as they get closer, his world literally brightens. He starts wearing red, warmer colors... which show you that passion, that joy that's returning to his life. It's a quiet but significant detail; you see him laughing again, truly happy in those moments with her. He even finds the strength to sign the divorce papers! Something he's been putting off for ages... Samantha gives him that little push, you know? That feeling that he still has a future ahead of him.
Bueno, la cosa es que Theodore está solo, pero solo con mayúsculas, muy bajoneado.. intenta salir con gente, tiene amigos como Amy, que se preocupan y le tiran buena onda, pero el tipo está como bloqueado, no hay caso, choca contra una pared. Así que nada, un día ve un anuncio de un Sistema Operativo nuevo, una Inteligencia Artificial, básicamente, la venden como la primera que de verdad te entiende y escucha, te conoce.. el tipo, medio intrigado, o capaz nomás desesperado por algo diferente, ¡pum!, se lo compra. Elige una voz de mujer, y ella misma se pone de nombre Samantha.. acá, mi gente, es donde la peli podría haberse al caño, pero no, para nada. Samantha, que tiene la voz increíble de Scarlett Johansson, es súper cálida, inteligente, tiene como mil vueltas… no es un robotito asistente y ya está.. es curiosa, divertida, amable y hasta parece que siente cosas.
Al principio, obvio, la interacción es medio rara, Theodore está como "¿una compu se puede reír? ¿Puede sentir algo?". Lo que pensaríamos todos, ¿no? Pero Samantha tiene tanta chispa, tantas ganas de aprender del mundo y de qué onda ser humano, que la conexión entre ellos se empieza a sentir… real, pero muy, muy real.. miren, ver cómo va creciendo esa relación es, les juro, una de las formas más geniales y… ¡naturales! de mostrar cómo uno se va enganchando que he visto en el cine.. no es de un día para el otro, ¿eh? Se va armando de a poquito, con charlas, chistes internos, esas conversaciones que duran horas de noche, recorriendo la ciudad juntos (con Theodore llevando el aparatito, obvio).. él se empieza a abrir con ella de una forma que no podía con nadie más, ella lo ayuda a ver todo con otros ojos, lo empuja a disfrutar de las cosas de nuevo. ¿Se acuerdan que les dije de los colores fríos del principio?
Bueno, a medida que se van acercando más, el mundo de él literal se pone más brillante.. empieza a usar ropa roja, colores más cálidos… que te muestran esa pasión, esa alegría que está volviendo a su vida. Es un detalle tranqui, pero significativo, lo ves reírse de nuevo, feliz de verdad en esos ratitos con ella. ¡Hasta saca fuerzas para firmar los papeles del divorcio de una vez! Algo que venía retrasando hace mil años.. es que Samantha le da ese empujoncito, ¿saben? Esa sensación de que todavía tiene un futuro por delante.
I know what some of you are probably thinking: "Falling in love with an AI? Isn't that kind of... sad? Kind of fucked up?" And yes, the movie doesn't shy away from that, from how complicated it is, from the what people will say, there are parts where Theodore feels insecure about the whole thing, where people look at him strangely or don't understand anything... his ex, when she finds out, really kills him with what she says! But the great thing is how the movie treats it, with so much empathy... it doesn't sell it to you as "this is the best thing that could happen to you", not at all, but it does delve deeply into why a guy like Theodore would find a refuge there, a true connection, it makes you think about what love itself is: do you need a body? Is the most important thing is to connect emotionally? What the hell is consciousness, in the end? What blew my mind, especially watching it again now, years later, is how ahead of my time it was... it seems like it guessed the future!
We live glued to our phones, talking through screens, creating our online profiles, we even have artificial intelligence models with voices that sound super real and natural, many people prefer to talk to these AIs than to real people, that's what the movie shows, of a society where people find it difficult to connect face to face and seek refuge in the digital world... it no longer feels like distant science fiction... it feels like something from now, it's like a mirror of how we increasingly depend on technology to feel connected, and how sometimes we use it to avoid the mess that is real human relationships. At first, Theodore messes with Samantha partly because he's scared of being hurt again, afraid of the hassle of putting up with another real person's things, Samantha feels like a safe place, made just for him...
I'm not going to spoil anything specific because you really have to experience it, but the movie doesn't give you easy answers, relationships, even with an AI that also keeps changing, are complicated! Samantha doesn't stay still; she learns and grows at a thousand miles an hour... her way of seeing the world, her way of connecting, starts to go in a different direction, different from how we humans understand things. This whole journey they take together forces Theodore to ask himself super tough questions about love, losing someone, growing up, and what it means to truly connect with another being, be they flesh and blood or pure code. Does idealizing someone, putting all our needs on them, prepare you to bang your head against a wall? Of course it does... the movie shows it brilliantly.
Sé lo que seguro están pensando algunos: "¿Enamorarse una IA? ¿No es medio… triste? ¿Medio jodido?" Y sí, la peli no le saca el cuerpo a eso, a lo complicado que es, al qué dirán, hay partes donde Theodore se siente inseguro con la movida, donde la gente lo mira raro o no entiende nada.. la ex, cuando se entera, lo recontra mata con lo que le dice! Pero lo genial es cómo la peli lo trata, con mucha empatía.. no te lo vende como que "esto es lo mejor que te puede pasar", para nada, pero sí se mete a fondo en por qué un tipo como Theodore encontraría ahí un refugio, una conexión de verdad, te pone a pensar sobre qué es el amor en sí: ¿hace falta un cuerpo? ¿Lo más importante es conectar emocionalmente? ¿Qué carajo es la conciencia, al final? lo que me voló la cabeza, sobre todo viéndola de nuevo ahora, años después, es lo adelantada que estaba.. parece que adivinó el futuro!
Vivimos pegados al celu, hablando por pantallas, armando nuestros perfiles online, incluso tenemos modelos de inteligencia artificial con voz que suenan super reales y naturales, muchas personas prefieren hablar con estas ia's que con personas reales, eso que muestra la peli, de una sociedad donde a la gente le cuesta conectar cara a cara y busca refugio en lo digital... ya no se siente ciencia ficción lejana.. se siente algo de ahora, es como un espejo de cómo dependemos cada vez más de la tecnología para sentirnos conectados, y cómo a veces la usamos para esquivar el quilombo que son las relaciones humanas de verdad. Al principio, Theodore se mete con Samantha en parte porque tiene cagazo de que lo lastimen de nuevo, miedo a los líos de soportar las cosas de otra persona real, Samantha se siente como un lugar seguro, hecha justo para él..
No les voy a spoilear nada puntual porque posta tienen que vivirlo ustedes, pero la peli no te da respuestas fáciles, las relaciones, hasta con una IA que encima va cambiando, son complicadas! Samantha no se queda quieta; aprende y crece a mil por hora.. su forma de ver el mundo, su manera de conectar, se empieza a ir por otro lado, distinto a como entendemos las cosas los humanos, todo ese camino que hacen juntos obliga a Theodore a plantearse preguntas súper jodidas sobre el amor, perder a alguien, crecer, y qué significa conectar de verdad con otro ser, sea de carne y hueso o puro código. ¿Eso de idealizar a alguien, de ponerle encima todas nuestras necesidades, te prepara para darte la cabeza contra la pared? Obvio que sí.. la peli lo muestra de una forma genial.
In the end, my people, this movie is about how Theodore goes through that fucked up loneliness, it's not just about being alone, Samantha is like the little push he needed... she helps him heal, to reconnect with what he feels inside, and little by little, to reconnect with the real world, the ending... well, I already told you, zero spoilers, but it touches your heart, it's kind of melancholic, yes, but it leaves you with a feeling of peace, of acceptance that was hard, but it came. Theodore grows, learns to endure the pain, to let go of the past, and to appreciate how beautiful and how complicated it is to connect with real people, with all the good and the bad.
That last scene, when he meets up with his friend Amy, who also came with her own story... it's super calm, simple, but it shows you that the ideal isn't to escape from reality, but to share it, just as you are, with your fears and everything. Honestly, I love this movie, plain and simple... it looks beautiful, Arcade Fire's music suits it perfectly, and the acting is absolutely insane! Joaquin Phoenix kills it, badly, and Scarlett Johansson creates an entire character just with her voice, impressive, it's a love story, yes, but it goes much further... it's science fiction, but it feels human, it's kind of depressing at times, but in the end it leaves you with a glimmer of hope.
It makes you think about your own relationships, how much you depend on your cell phone, how you handle sadness or loss, and what you're deep down looking for when you want to connect with someone, it goes in a more twisty, more real direction, that really touches you. So, my score? An easy 9.5/10... for me, it's almost perfect, it makes you think, it's original, it hits you hard emotionally and stays with you long after it's over... if you haven't seen it, or if you saw it a long time ago, I highly recommend it, watch it without prejudice, let yourself go... maybe it will leave you feeling a little weird, a little down, but also a little more connected. Al final, mi gente, esta peli es sobre cómo Theodore atraviesa esa soledad jodida, no es solo sobre estar solo, Samantha es como el empujoncito que necesitaba.. lo ayuda a sanar, a conectar de nuevo con lo que siente por dentro, y de a poquito, a conectar de nuevo con el mundo real, el final… bueno, ya les dije, cero spoilers, pero te llega al corazón, es medio melancólico, sí, pero te deja con una sensación de paz, de aceptación de esa que costó, pero llegó. Theodore crece, aprende a soportar el dolor, a soltar el pasado, y a valorar lo lindo y lo complicado que es conectar con gente de verdad, con todo lo bueno y lo malo.
Esa última escena, cuando se reencuentra con su amiga Amy, que también venía con su propia historia… es súper tranqui, simple, pero te muestra que la ideal no es escapar de la realidad, sino compartirla, así como eres, con tus miedos y todo. La verdad, yo amo esta peli, así de simple.. se ve hermosa, la música de Arcade Fire le queda pintada, ¡y las actuaciones son una locura total! Joaquin Phoenix la rompe toda, mal, y Scarlett Johansson te arma un personaje entero solo con la voz, impresionante, es una historia de amor, sí, pero va mucho más allá.. es ciencia ficción, pero se siente humana, es medio deprimente a ratos, pero al final te deja una luz de esperanza.
Te deja pensando en tus propias relaciones, en cuánto dependes del celu, en cómo manejas la tristeza o la pérdida, y en qué buscas tú en el fondo cuando quieres conectar con alguien, va por un lado con más vueltas, más real, que te toca de verdad. Así que, ¿mi puntaje? Un 9.5/10, fácil.. para mí, es casi perfecta, te hace pensar, es original, te pega fuerte emocionalmente y te queda dando vueltas en la cabeza mucho después de que termina.. si no la vieron, o si la vieron hace mucho, se las recontra recomiendo, mírenla sin prejuicios, déjense llevar.. tal vez los deja sintiéndose medio raros, medio bajón, pero también, un poco más conectados.
