Hello everyone, Hive friends, fans of good stories, I hope you're all doing well! Today I want to talk a little about a pretty interesting series. Today I'll give you my opinions on: What We Do in the Shadows. Where do I start? This series is a real gem, a real gem, that takes the craziest aspects of vampires and mixes them with the most normal problems of everyday life in a way that refreshes your soul. Imagine vampires who don't cry about the past or anything like that, but are complete weirdos in the modern world, trying to do everything from cleaning the house to solving super weird supernatural fights, all as if it were a fake documentary! If you like series like The Office or Modern Family, but you like more unfiltered humor (think It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), then this series is for you!
Basically, the thing is about four really crazy characters who live together in a house in Staten Island. We have three of your typical vampires: Nándor the Relentless, Nadja, and Laszlo. And then there's Colin Robinson, who is an "energy vampire" who, instead of blood, sucks people's energy, boring them with conversations that will put you to sleep. Every time Colin Robinson comes on with his robotic voice and that knack for making people fall over with boredom, it's impossible not to burst out laughing... the character is so original and unique that you think the people who made the series spent centuries in endless work meetings looking for inspiration.
And speaking of characters, because, let's see, they are the best of the best! Nándor is like the leader of the group, although “leader” is a bit of a stretch, because the poor guy is more lost... watching him try to fit in these times is hilarious and sometimes even tender. Nadja is a hurricane, pure chaotic energy, unpredictable and perhaps one of the funniest characters in the entire series... her vibe with Laszlo, who is charismatic as hell, but also a complete lunatic, is some of the best, epic moments I swear. Oh, and let’s not forget Guillermo, Nándor’s relative, who lives with the hope (or torture) of one day being turned into a vampire... his relationship with Nándor is the funniest, full of touches of fine humor and a constant irony about the role he plays in that house.
Hola a todos, amigos de Hive, fanáticos de las buenas historias, espero que estén súper bien! El día de hoy quiero hablar un poco sobre una serie bastante interesante, hoy les daré mis opiniones de: What We Do in the Shadows ¿Por dónde les cuento? Esta serie es una verdadera joyita, pero joyita, que agarra lo más loco de los vampiros y lo mezcla con los problemas más normales de la vida diaria de una forma que te refresca el alma, imagínense vampiros que no andan llorando por el pasado ni nada de eso, sino que son unos completos raritos en el mundo moderno, tratando de hacer de todo, desde limpiar la casa hasta resolver riñas sobrenaturales súper extrañas, y todo como si fuera un documental falso! Si a ustedes les gustan series como The Office o Modern Family, pero les gusta el humor más sin filtro (piensen en It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), entonces, esta serie es para ustedes!
Básicamente, la cosa va de cuatro personajes re-locos que viven juntos en una casa en Staten Island, tenemos tres vampiros de los de toda la vida: Nándor el Implacable, Nadja y Laszlo, y después está Colin Robinson, que es un “vampiro de energía” que en vez de sangre, chupa la energía de la gente, aburriéndolos con conversas que te duermen parado. Cada vez que sale Colin Robinson con su voz de robot y esa maña de hacer que la gente caiga redonda de aburrimiento, es imposible no soltar la carcajada.. el personaje es tan original y único que uno piensa que los que hicieron la serie se la pasaron siglos en reuniones de trabajo eternas para inspirarse.
Y hablando de personajes, porque, a ver, son lo mejor de lo mejor! Nándor es como el jefe del grupo, aunque “jefe” es mucho decir, porque el pobre tipo anda más perdido.. verlo tratar de encajar en estos tiempos es de ataque de risa y, a veces, hasta te da ternura, Nadja es un huracán, pura energía caótica, impredecible y, tal vez, uno de los personajes más cómicos de toda la serie.. su onda con Laszlo, que es carismático a morir, pero también un loco de atar, es de lo mejor, momentos épicos te juro. Ah, y no olvidemos a Guillermo, el familiar de Nándor, que vive con la ilusión (o la tortura) de que algún día lo conviertan en vampiro.. su relación con Nándor es de lo más divertida, llena de puntadas de humor finísimo y una ironía constante sobre el papel que juega en esa casa.
The mockumentary format is another brutal move of this series, the camera follows these crazy people as if it were a real documentary, capturing moments like this, as if it were nothing, and interviews that make them feel super real... there's a magic to seeing these vampires who have been around for centuries complaining about the most normal problems while interacting with those who are recording them. And the way they ignore all the vampire rules to make it funny, that's great, it's such a fresh and original idea that it gives you the feeling that everything is happening live, as if you were spying in their house... something I really liked is how they handle the whole vampire thing, you know? Instead of using the usual clichés, What We Do in the Shadows makes fun of them, but with an intelligence and creativity that amuses you.
There are chapters that are crazy, like the one with the "trial" with the vampire council, which also has some special appearances that any vampire fan will love, and not to mention the epic fight with the werewolves, ridiculous as hell, it's that balance between homage and mockery that makes each chapter a surprise and a real pleasure. And the script and the dialogues, ufff!, another level, you can tell that those who wrote this love vampire stories, but they aren't afraid to laugh at them in the best way... the humor is daring, with swear words and super crazy moments, but everything feels natural, there are scenes that make you laugh out loud and phrases so good that you end up wanting to repeat them to everyone, I myself have said Nadja's phrases because they are those that stick with you, it is one of those series that you not only watch, but you live and want to share with all your friends.
El formato de falso documental es otra movida brutal de esta serie, es que la cámara sigue a estos locos como si fuera un documental de verdad, captando momentos así, como si nada, y entrevistas que los hacen sentir súper reales.. es que tiene una magia ver a estos vampiros que tienen siglos quejándose de problemas de lo más normales mientras interactúan con los que los están grabando. Y la forma en que se pasan por alto todas las reglas de vampiros para que dé risa, eso es genial, es una idea tan fresca y original que te da la sensación de que todo está pasando en vivo, como si estuvieras espiando en su casa.. algo que de verdad me gustó es cómo manejan toda la onda de los vampiros, ¿sabes? En vez de usar los clichés de siempre, What We Do in the Shadows se burla de ellos, pero con una inteligencia y una creatividad que te divierte.
Hay capítulos que son una locura, como el del "juicio" con el consejo de vampiros, que además tiene unas apariciones especiales que cualquier fan de vampiros va a amar, y ni hablar de la pelea épica con los hombres lobo, ridícula a más no poder, es ese equilibrio entre homenaje y burla lo que hace que cada capítulo sea una sorpresa y un verdadero gustazo. Y el guion y los diálogos, ¡ufff!, otro nivel, se nota que los que escribieron esto aman las historias de vampiros, pero no tienen miedo de reírse de ellas de la mejor manera.. el humor es atrevidísimo, con palabrotas y momentos súper locos, pero todo se siente natural, hay escenas que te hacen reír a carcajadas y frases tan buenas que terminas queriendo repetírselas a todo el mundo, yo mismo he soltado frases de Nadja porque son de esas que se te quedan pegadas, es de esas series que no solo ves, sino que vives y quieres compartir con todos tus amigos.
One thing that makes this series special is that it’s a spin-off of the movie of the same name that came out in 2014, directed by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, not that you need to see the movie to get hooked on the series, but if you’re enjoying the series, I swear it’s totally worth checking out the original movie… the coolest thing is that, although they share the same universe, the series expands it with new characters and fresh situations, taking it to another level, but totally different! I was already looking forward to seeing what Waititi and Clement’s work was like, and I’ll tell you one thing, the series was really good, it exceeded my expectations by far! Since we're talking about technical stuff, let's see, it's not one of those productions that will blow your budget, but the special effects and how everything looks, the production design, are impeccable... the vibe of the environment, the setting, achieves that middle ground between the macabre and the ridiculous, with places that mix the gothic with the most normal of everyday life.
And here I have to stop for a moment to talk about the Spanish dubbing, it's a gem! It's not easy to adapt the humor of such a strange series, but here they excelled, they did it wonderfully, both the original and dubbed versions have their magic, so you can enjoy it in whatever language you want... something that made me think is that, although it's a comedy to laugh a lot, there are also moments when the characters are very human and that makes you really connect with them. Behind all the jokes and silliness, the series also touches on themes like loneliness, how one adapts to change, and feeling part of something. The relationship between Guillermo and Nándor, for example, has moments that touch your heart, genuinely... and although the series never gets too serious, those little touches of depth give it a plus that makes it even more interesting.
Una cosa que hace a esta serie especial es que, es un spin-off de la película del mismo nombre que salió en 2014, dirigida por Taika Waititi y Jemaine Clement, no es que necesites ver la peli para engancharte con la serie, pero si te está gustando la serie, te juro que vale totalmente la pena echarle un ojo a la película original.. lo más chévere es que, aunque comparten el mismo universo, la serie se manda a expandirlo con personajes nuevos y situaciones frescas, llevándolo a otro nivel, pero así, totalmente distinto! Yo ya venía con ganas de ver qué tal era el trabajo de Waititi y Clement, y les digo una cosa, la serie se pasó de buena, ¡superó mis expectativas por mucho! ya que estamos hablando de cosas técnicas, a ver, no es una producción de esas que te revientan el presupuesto, pero los efectos especiales y cómo se ve todo, el diseño de producción, están impecables.. la onda del ambiente, la ambientación, logra ese punto medio entre lo macabro y lo ridículo, con lugares que mezclan lo gótico con lo más normal del día a día.
Y aquí tengo que parar un toque para hablar del doblaje al español, es que es una joya! No es nada fácil adaptar el humor de una serie tan rara, pero aquí se lucieron, lo hicieron de maravilla, tanto la versión original como la doblada tienen su magia, así que la puedes disfrutar en el idioma que quieras.. algo que me dejó pensando es que, aunque es una comedia para reírse un montón, también hay momentos en los que los personajes se muestran muy humanos y eso te hace conectar con ellos de verdad. Detrás de tanto chiste y tontería, la serie también toca temas como la soledad, cómo uno se adapta a los cambios y eso de sentirse parte de algo, la relación entre Guillermo y Nándor, por ejemplo, tiene momentos que te llegan al corazón, así, genuinamente.. y aunque la serie nunca se pone seria de más, esos pequeños toques de profundidad le dan un plus que la hace aún más interesante.
Maybe some of you are hesitant to watch this series because you find it too strange or because the humor isn't your thing, right? But tell me something, when was the last time you came across a series that made you laugh like crazy, think a little, and even get emotional at the same time? What We Do in the Shadows isn't your average comedy, not at all. It's a show that celebrates the absurdity of life, the beauty of friendship, and how great it is to not take everything so seriously. It's like being invited to the strangest and funniest family reunion in the world, where all the craziness is welcome... if you still haven't decided to give it a chance, I'll give you one more reason, the last one: I give it a 9/10.
The humor, the characters, the nods to vampire movies, and that perfect mix of horror and comedy make it one of the best series I've seen in years. But not everything is perfect, of course (sometimes the lighting is a bit dim or some jokes don't quite hit). Overall, the experience is super fun and engaging. It reminds us that even the monsters of the night can be incredibly human... and hilarious. But seriously, if you're looking for something relaxed, different, and that makes you laugh, this series is a great option. And well, that's all for today. Take care of yourselves, bye!
Tal vez algunos dudan si ver esta serie porque les parece muy rara o que el humor no les va, ¿no? Pero a ver, díganme algo, ¿cuándo fue la última vez que se encontraron con una serie que los hiciera reír a morir, pensar un poquito y hasta emocionar al mismo tiempo? What We Do in the Shadows no es una comedia del montón, para nada, es un show que celebra lo absurdo de la vida, lo lindo de la amistad y lo genial que es no tomarse todo tan en serio. Es como si te invitaran a la reunión familiar más rara y divertida del mundo, donde toda locura es bienvenida.. si todavía no se animan a darle una chance, les doy una razón más, la última: le doy un 9/10.
El humor, los personajes, los guiños a las pelis de vampiros y esa mezcla perfecta de terror y comedia hacen que sea de las mejores series que he visto en años, pero no todo es perfecto, claro (a veces la luz está medio oscura o algún chiste no pega tanto), pero en general, la experiencia es súper divertida y te engancha, nos recuerda que hasta los monstruos de la noche pueden ser increíblemente humanos… y graciosísimos, pero en serio, si andan buscando algo relajado, diferente y que los haga reír esta serie es una gran opción.
