When you think about drive-in cinemas I get this kind of 70s feeling along with it. Girls in dresses, waiters on rollerblades bringing around milshakes and burgers, a place on a dark hill and people going on their first date together making out in the back of a car.
I don't know if in other countries a drive-in cinema is still a thing, but at least in Holland it isn't (anymore). Even better it was to hear that some local guys here from the region were organizing a local cult movie in a drive-in kind of setting. Postponed twice over the covid times for reasons which are a bit weird because sitting in your car by yourself watching a movie isn't really a threat, but hey....At least now it was able to go through!
Ow I loved the idea of it all. There were indeed girls on rollerblades bringing around drinks, and for the sound you had to tune in on your FM radio in the car. The movie had to wait to start until it was actually dark, because that is the deal with outdoor cinemas.
And.....if you wanted to order something you got this cool light you had to plug into you 12 volt adapter in the car, and put this sign on the roof which would light up so the rollerbalde girls would know that you wanted to order something. Hilarious!
So back to the actual movie!
As said, this is a bit of a cult movie for the people living in the Eindhoven region. There are a lot of cool drone shots of cars chasing motorcycles in the city center, which were all taken during lockdown times when the city hardly had any traffic. It is funny that everytime you recognized a place from the city, that is when it all feels so familiar.
Also the actors in the movie are all local people, which is literally the local taxi-driver (who told us about that he was making a movie back then, that is how we even got to know about the movie), a local writer, a local show presentor and many more. The movie was sort of a nice hommage to the stuff going on around here, with a laugh and a twist inside.
A thin storyline? Maybe it was, but that wasn't the point of it all. It was filmed in a cool way, and even real time shots from the parking lot were integrated into the movie. Not easy if you ask me!
They went all in with the whole concept which also meant local beers with a actually super cool label on there, which tasted really good, and also with bags and t-shirts. Support your local scene you know!
So for an Easter event which was postponed twice, this was a really fun thing to do! And sitting in your car watching a movie while having a sip of beer? I had never expected it to be so damn chill.
Bring back the drive-in cinemas!
