It usually happens in most of the movies within the horror genre, because since the beginnings of cinema, the horror genre has always been a pioneer. We must understand that cinema, as an art, was created to take our imagination beyond the everyday. Terror was part of this description, which is why we still see those films from more than 100 years ago with scenes from Dracula or Frankenstein, which although perhaps many people at this point find the costumes, scenes, and even special effects ridiculous, we must always take into account the context and the time in which they were made, being very advanced for their time.
I enjoy watching very old movies, even horror movies. While it is true that it is my least favorite genre, there is always one or another that stands out and makes me really enjoy them.
I will tell you only about 5 gems of horror movies (based on books) that I love and can recommend with my eyes closed. There are going to be many more, but for me they are the best.
¿No les ha pasado que están viendo una película que les parece increíble y cuando terminan de verla notan que es una película basada en un libro?
Suele suceder en la mayoría de las películas dentro del género de terror, y es que desde los inicios del cine, el género de terror y horror siempre ha sido pionera. Debemos entender que el cine, como arte, fue creado para llevar nuestra imaginación más allá de lo cotidiano. El terror, entraba dentro de esta descripción, es por eso que aún vemos esas películas de hace más de 100 años con escenas de Drácula o de Frankestein, que aunque tal vez a muchos a estas alturas les cause gracia y vea ridículos los vestuarios, las escenas, e incluso, los efectos especiales, debemos siempre tomar en cuenta el contexto y la época en que se hicieron, siendo así, avanzadísimos para su época.
Yo disfruto mucho de ver películas muy viejas, incluso las de terror. Si bien es cierto que es mi género menos preferido, siempre existe uno u otra que se sobresale y hace que realmente los disfrute.
Les voy a contar solo de 5 joyas de la cinematografía de horror (basadas en libros) que me encantan y que puedo recomendar con los ojos cerrados. Van a faltar muchísimas, pero para mí son las mejores.
El silencio de los inocentes:
"Hi, Clarice"
Let's start by talking about the book: it is written by Thomas Harris and was published in 1988. It was an immediate bestseller and the rights were bought to make a film directed by the award-winning Jonathan Demme and starring Jodie Foster as Clarice, the FBI school student who was sent to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a psychopath accused of cannibalism starring Anthonny Hopkins. Undoubtedly, the tension felt from beginning to end, the meetings between Dr. Lecter and Clarice always left us anguished. Besides a formidable performance, the script was spectacular; this made the film win the 3 main oscars: Best film, best direction and best script.
Empecemos por hablar del libro: está escrito por Thomas Harris y fue publicado en el año 1988 fue un bestseller inmediato y fueron comprados los derechos para hacer una película dirigida por el galardonado Jonathan Demme y protagonizada por Jodie Foster como Clarice, la estudiante de la escuela del FBI a quien enviaron a entrevistar al Dr. Hannibal Lecter, un psicópata acusado de canibalismo protagonizado por Anthonny Hopkins. Es indudable la tensión que hace sentir de principio a fin, los encuentros entre el Dr. Lecter y Clarice siemrpe nos dejaban angustiado. Además de una actuación formidable, el guión era espectacular; esto hizo que la película se llevara los 3 oscars principales: Mejor película, mejor dirección y mejor guión.
El Resplandor:
"Hello, Jhonny!"
There is no shortage of many people's (including my mother's) favorite horror story maker, Stephen King. I grew up watching the library fill up with red-backed books written by the author and all taken to the movies. It was difficult for me to choose just one of the dozens of films he has made (It, Carrie, Animal Cemetery, The Evil Wish Shop, Cujo, this one and many others), but I decided to choose the one with the most elements of horror: from the scene of the boy riding a tricycle, to the identical twins at the end of the corridor, or the face of Jack Nicholson walking through the door he broke seconds before is enough to say that "The Shining" is definitely one of the absolute gems of terror of the last century.
It was directed by Stanley Kubrick in 1980, and by this mention alone it should be on my list, but what he did with "The Shining" is so impressive that I couldn't fail to mention it here. It is also worth mentioning that Stephen King always participates in the productions of the movies based on his books, he can even discard directors and even actors that he doesn't think are suitable. For this movie I didn't want Jack Nicholson, but thanks to Kubrick, we have the joy of immortalizing him in one of his best performances as a father who is losing his mind while locked up with his family during the low season in a hotel that works only in winter.
No puede faltar el hacedor de historias de terror favorito de muchos (incluyendo a mi madre) Stephen King, yo crecí viendo como se iba llenando la biblioteca de libros de lomo rojo escritos por el autor y todos llevados al cine. Se me hizo difícil escoger solo una película de las decenas que ha realizado (It, Carrie, Cementerio de animales, La tienda de los deseos malignos, cujo, este muchas otras), pero decidí escoger la que más elementos de terror tiene: desde la escena del niño paseando en triciclo, hasta las gemelas idénticas en el fondo del pasillo, u la cara de Jack Nicholson atravesando la puerta que rompió segundos antes es suficiente para decir que "El Resplandor" es definitivamente una de las absolutas joyas de terror del siglo pasado.
Estuvo dirigida por Stanley Kubrick en 1980, y solo por esta mención ya debe estar en mi lista, pero lo que hizo con "El Resplandor" es tan impresionante que no podía dejar de mencionarlo aquí. También vale decir que Stephen King siempre participa en las producciones de las películas basadas en sus libros, incluso puede llegar a desechar directores e incluso actores que a él no le parezcan adecuados. Para esta película no quería a Jack Nicholson, pero gracias a Kubrick, tenemos la dicha de inmortalizarlo en una de sus mejores actuaciones como un padre que va perdiendo la cordura mientras está encerrado con su familia durante la temporada baja en un hotel que trabaja solo en invierno.
Los pájaros (1963):
Cuando leemos el título de Los pájaros solo nos imaginamos Alfred Hitchcok y su bizarra silueta, pero resulta que está gran obra está basada en el libro homónimo de Daphne du Maurier. Esta película con una trama bastante sencilla explota el punto del vista del director en la que unos pájaros empiezan a tener comportamientos extraños y atacan a toda una comunidad, incluyendo a la protagonista Tippi Hedrens. Los que conocen la historia de Hitchcok, saben todo lo que pasaban las actrices para poder llegar a las magistrales actuaciones, y Tippi no se salvo de esto. Aunque su Psicosis suele ser una de las películas más sonadas por el apuñalamiento en el baño y la mejor musica de suspenso de todas (si, mejor que la de tiburón), el ataque de los pájaros también entra en una de las más reconocidas.
Entrevista con el vampiro:
This play written by Anne Rice is part of the vampire chronicles, and although many of us know that we saw this movie because of the sexiest protagonists of the time, we can't deny that both Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Christian Slater and without forgetting Antonio Banderas, are no longer top-notch actors (Ton Cruise not much), what I mean is that physical appearance did matter in this movie, because as good vampires they must be seductive, but the acting had to be up to the task of the production. I remember watching this movie as a child on some national channel, and I was impressed by how raw some parts were (even though I watched it with censorship) but just seeing a very little girl (starring Kirsten Dusr, killing with her little fangs, filled me with total horror. A film with temporary jumps that I love, and a book written just as spectacular. It was directed by Neil Jordan and with a script by the same writer, you couldn't ask for a better one. In its time it was very acclaimed by the critics and it is still one of the great jewels of the 90's, but the best thing was to see these actors more beautiful than ever.
Esta obra escrita por Anne Rice forma parte de las crónicas vampíricas, y aunque muchos sabemos que vimos esta película por los protagonistas más sexys de la época, no podemos negar que tanto Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Christian Slater y sin dejar de lado a Antonio Banderas, dejan de ser actores de gran categoría (Ton Cruise no mucho), lo que quiero decir, es que el aspecto físico si importaba en esta película, porque como buenos vampiros deben ser seductores, pero la actuación debía estar a la altura de todo lo que a la producción se refiere. Recuerdo haber visto esta película de niña por algún canal nacional, y me impresionaba lo cruda que eran algunas partes (y eso que la ví con censura) pero nada más de ver a un niña muy pequeña (protagonizada por Kirsten Dusr, matando con sus pequeños colmillitos, a mí me llenaba de total horror. Una película con saltos temporales que a mí me encantan, y un libro escrito igual de espectacular. Estuvo dirigida por Neil Jordan y con el guión de la misma escritora, no se podía pedir que fuera mejor. En su época fue muy aclamada por la crítica y sigue siendo una de las grandes joyas de los 90´s, pero lo mejor fue ver a estos actores más bellos que nunca.
Frankenstein:
I could not miss one of the most impressive works ever made, directed by James Whale, who left us works like Frankenstein's Bride and the Invisible Man. The film is based on the work of Mary Shelley, who also has a biographical film about her life and the process of publishing her work in 1816. The story of how Dr Frankenstein and Fritz, his assistant, bring to life a humanoid made of different origins. One of the most iconic horror characters of all time and brought to the screen countless times could not get out of this list.
No podía dejar pasar una de las obras más impresionantes jamás hechas, dirigida por James Whale, quien nos dejó obras como la novia de Frankestein y el hombre invisible. La película es basada en la obra de Mary Shelley, quién también tiene una película biográfica acerca de su vida y el proceso para publicar su obra en el año 1816. La historia de como el Dr Frankenstein junto a Fritz, su asistente llevan a la vida a un humanoide hecho con distintas procedencias. Uno de los personajes de terror más icónicos de todos los tiempos y llevado a la pantalla innumerablemente no podía salir de esta lista.
Drácula:
I was about to leave this one out, because 6 doesn't seem like a number for a title but we couldn't leave out not one, but two versions of Bram Stoker's emblematic Dracula. How can I not include the most famous vampire of all? And although there are many films that I could include in this list, I am going to name two films that for me, are the two best versions that have been created. The first one I will name is the 1931 film starring Bella Lugosi, although it is an adaptation that takes the main character and includes him in its time, it is still an impressive film. And the second movie, more attached to the main story, was directed by Francis Ford Coppolla and starred Gary Oldman (whom I love), Winnona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins and Keanu Reeves, jewels of cinematography that could not go unnoticed.
Estuve a punto de dejar por fuera esta, porque es que 6 no me parece un número para un título pero no podíamos dejar no a una, sino a dos versiones de la emblemática Drácula de Bram Stoker. ¿Cómo se me ocurre no incluír al vampiro más famoso de todos? Y aunque hay muchas películas que podría incluir en esta lista, voy a nombrar a dos películas que para mí, son las dos mejores versiones que se han creado. La primera que nombraré es la de 1931 protagonizada por Bella Lugosi, aunque es una adaptación que toma al personaje principal y lo incluye en su época, no deja de ser una película impresionante. Y la segunda película, más aferrada a la historia principal, fue dirigida por Francis Ford Coppolla y protagonizada por Gary Oldman (a quien amo), Winnona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins y Keanu Reeves, joyas de la cinematografía que no podía pasar desapercibidas.
