Hello my dear friends, today I bring you an analysis about one of the characters that, in my opinion, have grown the most, a complex character and full of matíces that you can hate, love or simply understand. Hola que tal mis queridos amigos, el día de hoy les traigo un análisis acerca de uno de los personajes que, a mi juicio, han crecido más, un personaje complejo y lleno de matíces al que puedes odiar, amar o simplemente comprender. Masterfully played by actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Negan Smith first appears in episode 16 of season six. He's a tough guy with a trucker's slang (that's one of the aspects that many viewers like or laugh at) and yes, he's quite crude in his dialogue. He leads a group of thugs who call themselves "Saviors" and live in an abandoned factory that is their safe haven and which they call "The Sanctuary." These thugs protect and surround him at all times, others are engaged in looting other safe havens or intercepting survivors along the way to take their supplies, and if they refuse, they are simply killed. Negan won't take no for an answer, so if you refuse his demands he'll probably take you out himself using his favourite weapon.
Magistralmente interpretado por el actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Negan Smith aparece por primera vez en el episodio 16 de la sexta temporada. Es un tipo rudo con un argot de camionero (ese es uno de los aspectos que a muchos de los espectadores les agrada o les hace reír) sí, es bastante soez en sus diálogos. Él lidera un grupo de matones que se hacen llamar "Salvadores" y viven en una fábrica abandona que es su refugio y al que llaman "El Santuario" Estos matones lo protegen y rodean siempre, otros se dedican a saquear otros refugios o a interceptar supervivientes en el camino para quitarle sus provisiones, y si ellos se niegan, simplemente son asesinados. As he is an unconventional character, his favourite weapon isn't either, it's a baseball bat surrounded by barbed wire that he calls "Lucille" (it's the name of his dead wife) the strange thing is that Negan talks to it, as if he thinks it´s a person, but although the Negan of the series is quite similar to his comic book version, the latter is even more crude because... sometimes he does certain things with Lucille that I'm certainly not going to describe here haha.
Como él es un personaje poco convencional, su arma favorita tampoco lo es, se trata de un bate de baseball rodeado por alambre de púas al que él llama "Lucille" (es el nombre de su esposa muerta) lo extraño es que Negan le habla, como si creyera que es una persona, pero aunque el Negan de la serie es bastante parecido a su versión del comic, este último es incluso más soez pues... a veces hace ciertas cosas con Lucille que desde luego no voy a describir aquí jaja.
When he felt threatened or felt that his authority was being questioned, he would not rest until he gave, in his opinion, "exemplary" punishment to his opponents, whether they were deserters from his community or simply people who opposed his designs. He had a harem where he even collected the wives of his henchmen or "saviours" as he called them, and if for some reason he discovered that the girl was still seeing her husband, he would brutally punish the man, as happened with Dwight, whose face he burned with an industrial iron.

But without a doubt the moment we hate Negan the most is when he and his "Saviours" captured Rick and his group, kidnapped them and then he proceeded to murder Abraham and Glen using Lucille. Not only was the fact of the brutal murder, but he enjoyed it, he taunted them as he beat them, he reveled in the pain he caused both physically and emotionally, at that moment he seemed possessed by a sadistic force and his foul rather than funny remarks began to turn perverse, due to the situation. But first I must clarify that Negan doesn't always use torture or physical violence, as he also uses psychological torture through well-directed threats (he knows how to impose fear).

At first Rick attacked him and slit his throat, but he later gets him medical attention to save him, before locking him in a cell, his intention was to show Negan that his community could rise again with the effort and work of everyone, and that it was not necessary to kill him.
No obstante a Negan le llega su momento, como decimos en lationoamérica "se volteó la tortilla" es decir, la situación cambió dramáticamente para él cuando, después de un ataque a Alajandría (la comunidad de Rick) y debido a una astuta artimaña de Eugene, sus planes fallan y él termina capturado, siendo prisionero en una celda de la comunidad. Al principio Rick lo atacó y le cortó el cuello, pero posteriormente hace que le presten atención médica para salvarlo, antes de encerrarlo en una celda, su intención era mostrarle a Negan que su comunidad podía resurgir con el esfuerzo y el trabajo de todos, y que no era necesario asesinarlo.
During his confinement, Rick constantly visits him to tell him about the progress his community is making, and contrary to what the villain believed, he is not tortured or mistreated. The long confinement and the hours of solitude allow him to remember his past life and notice how vulnerable he really is, after having been at the top of his own community, after having been a leader and having everything in his favour, now he was reduced and alone, he wished to die and be reunited with his wife Lucille, and it is here when we find one of the most profound and valuable dialogues of the series and also of the comic.

Maggie goes to see him, ready to kill him to make him pay for the death of Glen (her husband) he begins to provoke her to be filled with rage and kill him, but she, noticing that something is not right makes him confess to her which is the reason why he no longer wants to live, he replies that he wants to be reunited with his wife and then Maggie, feeling that she has found the perfect punishment, spares his life, arguing that the Negan she wanted to kill was worse than dead, his punishment would be to live with the remorse that was beginning to eat away at him and hurt him, as he began to reunite (without even realising it) with the Negan he once was, someone without evil.

Negan is a character with great depth, who shows us that we are not perfect and that, without realising it, the environment in which we live can change us drastically until we become unrecognisable. I myself confess that I hated him even after his redemption, because like Maggie I found it hard to forget and forgive, in fact every time I rewatch the scenes of Glen and Abraham's death, I am filled with resentment towards him, but he also hated himself, he was also tortured by the same mental images and therefore, even without meaning to, he began to return to his essence, not to change, but to be the same guy he used to be when he lived with his wife and took care of her when she was sick.
Negan es un personaje con una gran profundida, que nos demuestra que no somos perfectos y que, sin darnos cuenta, el entorno en el que nos desenvolvemos puede llegar a cambiarnos drásticamente hasta volvernos irreconocibles. Yo misma confieso que lo odié incluso luego de su redención, porque al igual que Maggie me costó olvidar y perdonar, de hecho cada vez que vuelvo a mirar las escenas de la muerte de Glen y Abraham, me lleno de rencor hacia él, pero él también se odió a sí mismo, también lo torturaron las mismas imágenes mentales y por lo tanto, aun sin proponérselo comenzó a retornar a su esencia, no a cambiar, sino a ser el mismo tipo que solía ser cuando vivía con su esposa y cuidaba de ella cuando estaba enferma.
Although Negan is not one of my favourite characters I think he deserves respect for his tremendous development, he is a character that has undoubtedly grown tremendously.
Aunque Negan no es de mis personajes favoritos creo que merece respeto por su tremendo desarrollo, es un personaje que sin lugar ha dudas a crecido tremendamente.
