Released in 2013, The Great Gatsby is not at all a release of the year but it is certainly a film that we should not pass under the table, I remember that the first time I saw it I wanted to tell everyone about the movie but since then a big question arose in me: is it a love movie or a love tragedy? Still, it will always be in my top favorite book adaptations and I will recommend it whenever I can.
Basada en el libro que lleva su mismo nombre escrito por Scott Fitzgerald esta película es realmente un remake de su homónima estrenada en 1974, la cual también fue todo un éxito de la época. Se encuentra ambientada en los años 20 y es un reflejo de toda la época, mientras ves la película de verdad te sientes envuelto por toda esa vibra de glamour que desborda este filme. Con las actuaciones de Leonardo Dicaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke, entre otros, esta película esta repleta de buenas actuaciones, con guiones fieles al libro y sobre todo, la recreación visual de los tres espacios en los que se desarrolla la acción: por un lado, Long Island, lugar de residencia habitual de las familias más adineradas de Nueva York; por otro lado, la propia ciudad de Nueva York en sus años de más crecimiento tras la Primera Guerra Mundial, algo lejos todavía del crack del 29; y, en mitad de las dos, lo que Nick Carraway llama el “valle de las cenizas”, una tierra baldía, sucia en la que viven otros dos personajes importantes.
Based on the book of the same name written by Scott Fitzgerald, this film is actually a remake of its namesake released in 1974, which was also a hit at the time. It is set in the 1920's and is a reflection of the entire era, while watching the movie you really feel enveloped by all that glamorous vibe that overflows this film. With the performances of Leonardo Dicaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke, among others, this film is full of good performances, with scripts faithful to the book and above all, the visual recreation of the three spaces in which the action takes place: on the one hand, Long Island, the usual place of residence of the wealthiest families in New York; on the other hand, New York City itself in its years of greatest growth after World War I, still a long way from the crash of '29; and, in the middle of the two, what Nick Carraway calls the "valley of ashes", a wasteland, dirty where two other important characters live.
Aunque en el libro esto nunca pinto ser una historia de amor puesto que se centraba mucho mas en la historia de Nick Carraway y como este evolucionaba con el pasar de los capítulos, en la película sucedió algo bastante diferente puesto que aún Nick tiene un papel bastante importante ya que es quien nos narra toda la historia, sin embargo llegado a cierto punto de la película su personaje parece desvanecerse entre los demás para darle paso protagónico al amor entre Jay Gatsby y su amada Daysi, es decir, la película se divide en dos partes: En la primera, Nick, internado a causa de alcoholismo, empieza a escribir la historia de su misterioso vecino, nuestro protagonista Jay Gatsby. Durante esa primera parte asistimos a una presentación muy demorada del protagonista, al que conocemos a través de referencias de otros personajes y sobre todo, gracias a las espectaculares fiestas que ofrece en su mansión. Esto me hizo desesperarme un poco porque quería conocer a gatsby ya jajaja pero es necesario en este punto también aparece también el resto de personajes: los Buchanan y la maravillosa golfista Jordan Baker. Pero el último en aparecer es el propio Gatsby, a quien primero conocemos de forma gradual y después de mucho suspenso, descubrimos su rostro. En la segunda parte, asistimos al romance entre Gatsby y Daisy para luego de varios giros inesperados, quedar con el corazón en las manos y pensar en que nadie te amara cono Gatsby a Daysi (quien a mi parecer y espero estén de acuerdo conmigo, no merecía tanto amor de gatsby). De esto trata básicamente esta historia.
Although in the book this never painted to be a love story since it focused much more on the story of Nick Carraway and how this evolved with the passing of the chapters, in the film something quite different happened since Nick still has a very important role as it is who tells us the whole story, however at a certain point in the film his character seems to fade among the others to give way to the love between Jay Gatsby and his beloved Daysi, that is, the film is divided into two parts: In the first, Nick, hospitalized because of alcoholism, begins to write the story of his mysterious neighbor, our protagonist Jay Gatsby. During this first part we witness a very delayed presentation of the protagonist, whom we get to know through references from other characters and, above all, thanks to the spectacular parties he throws at his mansion. This made me a little desperate because I wanted to meet Gatsby already hahaha but it is necessary at this point also appears also the rest of the characters: the Buchanan and the wonderful golfer Jordan Baker. But the last to appear is Gatsby himself, whom we first meet gradually and after much suspense, we discover his face. In the second part, we witness the romance between Gatsby and Daisy and after several unexpected twists, we are left with our hearts in our hands and think that no one will love you as much as Gatsby loved Daysi (who in my opinion, and I hope you agree with me, did not deserve so much love from Gatsby). This is basically what this story is about.
Es una película llena de metáforas y escenas que luego de analizar, te darán mucho que pensar puesto que para mi es una de las más grandes obras cinematográficas que tenemos en los últimos tiempos. Una historia que relata lo perfecto que se puede sentir a ser estar enamorado pero lo horrible que pueden llegar a ser las traiciones, a su vez una historia increíble de superación personal con el fin de recuperar a su amada o quizá nos demuestra la tragedia de querer esforzarnos por lo inalcanzable, he allí mi duda, ¿de que manera verlo? Gatsby representa todo lo que el sacrificio conlleva con el único objetivo de vivir su sueño ideal, por el que trabajo tanto y por el cual, sigue ensimismado mirando la luz verde entre la niebla con la única esperanza de ¿rescatar? A su amada.
It is a film full of metaphors and scenes that after analyzing, will give you much to think about since for me it is one of the greatest cinematographic works we have in recent times. A story that tells how perfect it can feel to be in love but how horrible betrayals can be, at the same time an incredible story of self-improvement in order to recover your loved one or maybe it shows us the tragedy of wanting to strive for the unattainable, there is my doubt, how to see it? Gatsby represents all that sacrifice entails with the sole objective of living his ideal dream, for which he has worked so hard and for which he remains absorbed, staring at the green light through the fog with the only hope of rescuing? His beloved.
The green light in Daisy's house that Gatsby wistfully views from his own home across the water represents "the unattainable dream."
He visto esta película unas 6 veces y 6 veces quede con mi corazón confundido pero nos muestra una realidad lamentable: el amor suele doler.
