Paradójicamente, una de las primeras películas que vino a mi mente al pensar en escenas de guerra ensordecedoras, es una acerca de un hombre que se rehúsa a portar y disparar, un arma. Entre estallidos, disparos y detonaciones, Desmond Thomas Doss es un médico militar americano que atraviesa por las más rudas condiciones de la segunda guerra mundial, por el mero amor a su labor, con la única motivación de ser la ayuda médica de sus compañeros, y logrando así salvar las vidas de setenta y cinco hombres de infantería en la batalla de Okinawa, sobre el acantilado de Maeda.
Paradoxically, one of the first films that came to mind when thinking of deafening war scenes is one about a man who refuses to carry and shoot a gun. Between explosions, shots and detonations, Desmond Thomas Doss is an American military doctor who goes through the harshest conditions of the WWII, for the mere love of his work, with the sole motivation of being the medical aid of his companions, thereby managing to save the lives of seventy-five infantrymen in the Battle of Okinawa, on the Hacksaw ridge.
La vida y motivaciones de este inusual héroe de guerra se nos son presentadas entre sonidos suaves y música instrumental. Progresivamente, mientras que Desmond se enfoca en demostrar en cada uno de sus pasos que es tan valioso como el resto de sus compañeros, la película empuja al espectador a sonidos cada vez más fuertes; hasta que al adentrarnos en las escenas meramente bélicas, olvidamos por completo la tranquilidad inicial en la que la vida del protagonista se desarrolló. Sin embargo, él mismo mediante sus oraciones y acciones, demuestra que esa tranquilidad de sonidos de naturaleza y piezas de cello que como espectadores ya olvidamos, sigue sonando dentro de él; es la misma fuerza de su espíritu y es lo único que lo motiva a cumplir su misión.
The life and motivations of this unusual war hero are presented to us between soft sounds and instrumental music. Progressively, while Desmond focuses on demonstrating in each of his steps that he is as valuable as the rest of his companions, the film pushes the viewer to louder and louder sounds; until we enter the war scenes, we completely forget the initial tranquility in which the protagonist's life unfolded. However, through his prayers and actions, he shows that that tranquility of sounds of nature and pieces of cello that we as spectators already forgot, continues to sound within him; it is the very strength of his spirit and it is the only thing that motivates him to fulfill his mission.
Sin disparar una sola bala, sin ser si quiera el culpable directo del silbido que lo acompaña dentro de sus propios oídos, las intenciones de este protagonista están lejos del rencor, el odio y la brutalidad que lo rodea. La atmosfera que intenta ignorar por el bien de aquellos a quien decide ayudar, los sonidos que lo ensordecen y que llevarían a cualquiera a la locura, intentan empujarlo ello mientras él los rechaza, y esto es lo que más llamó mi atención de esta película.
Without firing a single bullet, without even being the direct one to blame for the whistle that accompanies him inside his own ears, this protagonist's intentions are far from the resentment, hatred and brutality that surrounds him. The atmosphere that he tries to ignore for the sake of those he decides to help, the sounds that deafen him and that would drive anyone crazy, try to push him while he rejects them, and this is what caught my attention the most about this movie.
Somos espectadores pasivos de todo lo que sucede a su alrededor, saturados del sonido de los disparos que pasan sobre su cabeza, mientras que él se hace sordo ante ellos en función de una causa mayor. Mel Gibson nos presenta un héroe que fervientemente rechaza toda la violencia que el mismo evita crear. Ignora los insultos y gritos, los constantes estallidos pues sabe que dentro de él está la calma que nosotros, como espectadores, olvidamos. Para mí, nos trae otra forma de valentía muy diferente a la que estamos acostumbrados, y que nos recuerda que debemos, incluso en los momentos más difíciles, aferrarnos a la canción que suena en nuestro interior.
We are passive spectators of everything that happens around him, saturated with the sound of the shots that pass over his head, while he becomes deaf to them in function of a greater cause. Mel Gibson presents us a hero who fervently rejects all the violence that he avoids to create. He ignores the insults and screams, the constant outbursts because he knows that within him is the calm that we, as spectators, already forgot. For me, it brings us another form of courage very different from what we are used to, and it reminds us that we must, even in the most difficult moments, hold on to the song that sounds within us.
