Hello, movie lovers, I hope you are doing very well. Last night we were watching an old documentary about the Oopart (objects out of time), and I remembered a sci-fi movie I had seen a few years ago: Predestination, starring Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook. Interesting film and, why not, controversial for its twisted subject matter.
Hola, amantes del cine, espero se encuentren muy bien. Anoche estábamos viendo un viejo documental sobre los Oopart (objetos fuera del tiempo), y recordé una película de ciencia ficción que había visto hace unos años: Predestination, protagonizada por Ethan Hawke y Sarah Snook. Film interesante y, ¿por qué no?, controversial por su temática medio retorcida.
Argument.
Right off the bat, the film is painted as a typical fiction about a special agent, John, who travels through time to prevent some catastrophe or other before it happens. So far, so good. The strong and juicy part of the story begins when we realize what is happening before our eyes, and no, it is not as predictable as it may seem.
Argumento.
De buenas a primeras, nos pintan el film como la típica ficción sobre un agente especial, Jhon, que viaja en el tiempo para prevenir alguna que otra catástrofe antes de que suceda. Hasta ahí, todo bien. Lo fuerte y lo jugoso de la historia comienza cuando nos damos cuenta qué es lo que está ocurriendo ante nuestros ojos, y no, no es tan predecible como quizás parezca.
Everything can change in a bar.
We witness a typical chala between customer and bartender, where the bartender wants to break the ice to find out what is bothering his new companion so much. This man, who some guys call "freak" as soon as he enters the bar, has an evasive and rough attitude, but it is more than obvious that he has something very... striking; that something is what "attracted" the bartender, and as he sits down to listen to part of his story, he invites him to tell him everything that ails him. And this is where we ride the roller coaster.
Todo puede cambiar en un bar.
Presenciamos una típica chala entre cliente y cantinero, donde el cantinero quiere romper el hielo para saber qué es lo que tanto le aflige a su nuevo compañero. Este hombre, al que unos tipos llaman “fenómeno” apenas entra al bar, tiene una actitud evasiva y tosca, pero es más que obvio que tiene algo muy… llamativo; ese algo es lo que “atrajo” al cantinero, y al sentarse a escuchar parte de su historia, le invita a que le cuente todo lo que le aqueja. Y es aquí donde nos montamos en la montaña rusa.
Something just doesn't "click".
Already from a Jhon (Jane), tells that she was besides being an orphan, she was a woman and since she was a little girl she felt that she was not herself, but someone else, besides, she had aptitudes and attitudes that made her stand out from all the girls (and even boys). Her passion was to be able to travel to space, everything related to it intrigued her and called her attention; so when she was recruited for a space agency, she was delighted, she had the best scores in every category and task she was given. After a problem she had with one of the other recruits, she is expelled from the program without much explanation (none, actually).
Algo que no “encaja”.
Ya de una Jhon (Jane), cuenta que era además de ser huérfano, era mujer y desde que era una niña sentía que no era ella misma, sino alguien más, además, tenía aptitudes y actitudes que la hacían sobresalir de entre todas las niñas (y hasta los niños). Su pasión era poder viajar al espacio, todo lo referente a él le intrigaba y llamaba su atención; así que cuando es reclutada para una agencia espacial, ella va encantada, tenía las mejores puntuaciones en cada categoría y tarea que le ponían. Luego de un problema que tuvo con otra de las reclutadas, es expulsada del programa sin muchas explicaciones (ninguna, en realidad).
A finished woman and a man who has everything taken away from him.
Jhon continues to tell his story with great regret and anger. As time goes on, when she was still Jane, she falls in love with a guy and gets pregnant, ruining her dream of re-enlisting in the space program. When she gives birth, she is told that she has a unique physical condition and that they had to take emergency measures to save her life; it turns out that she was a hermaphrodite (which they never explained how she never knew) and she had sex change surgery. At this point she could do nothing but dream of raising her daughter with her new identity, but it is taken away from her life. So he continues his new life all alone, shattered and at a loss for what to do until he becomes a writer for a magazine.
Una mujer acabada y un hombre al que le quitan todo.
Jhon continúa contando su historia con gran pesar e ira. Al pasar el tiempo, cuando aún era Jane, se enamora de un tipo y queda embarazada, arruinando su sueño de volverse a enlistar en el programa espacial. Cuando da a luz, le dicen que tiene una condición física única y que tuvieron que tomar medidas de emergencia para poder salvar su vida; resulta que era hermafrodita (cosa que nunca explicaron cómo es que ella nunca lo supo) y le hicieron una cirugía de cambio de sexo. Ya a este punto ella ya no podía hacer nada más que soñar con criar a su hija con su nueva identidad, pero esta es arrebatada de su vida. Así que él continúa su nueva vida completamente solo, destrozado y sin saber qué hacer hasta que se convierte en escritor para una revista.
Would you shoot your past in the face?
As the bartender listens to his story, he doesn't seem the least bit shocked, instead, he quickly offers to hand him the man who destroyed his life on a silver platter. Jhon hesitates but likes the idea and even more when this strange guy tells him that he works for the agency he wanted to join so badly when he was young. Here's where the good stuff starts, they travel back in time, to the exact moment where Jane would meet this guy and Jhon would have the chance to kill him.
¿Le dispararías a tu pasado en la cara?
Mientras el cantinero escuchaba su historia, este no parece asombrarse en lo más mínimo, en cambio, rápidamente le ofrece darle en bandeja de plata a ese hombre que le destrozó la vida. Jhon duda pero le agrada la idea y más cuando este extraño tipo le dice que trabaja para la agencia a la que tanto quería entrar de joven. Ya aquí comienza lo bueno, viajan al pasado, al momento exacto donde Jane conocería a este tipo y Jhon tendría la oportunidad de matarlo.
I'll leave it there because spoilers abound and the idea is that you see it, I really recommend it. Even though I don't really like this kind of movies, this one hooked me right away, it's not the typical sci-fi film with thousands of special effects either, everything is kept to the bare minimum and that gives a "natural" plus to the whole plot. In my opinion, I didn't find it so predictable the first time I saw it, and this second opportunity to see it, I was able to understand more things. Besides the fact that it is not necessary to have so much knowledge about how time travel works, the narrative also leaves it to a minimum and explained very simply. The scenography and music also help a lot in giving context and messages that, if you are very detailed, you will understand many things.
Lo dejaré hasta ahí porque los spoiler abundan y la idea es que la vean, de verdad que la recomiendo. A pesar de que no me gusten mucho este tipo de películas, esta me enganchó enseguida, tampoco es el típico film de ciencia ficción con miles de efectos especiales, todo se mantiene en lo más mínimo y eso le da un plus “natural” a toda la trama. A mi parecer, no me resultó tan predecible la primera vez que la vi, y esta segunda oportunidad de verla, pude entender más cosas. Además de que no hace falta tener tato conocimiento sobre cómo funcionan los viajes en el tiempo, la narrativa también lo deja al mínimo y explicado muy sencillo. La escenografía y la musicalización también ayudan mucho a la hora de dar contexto y mensajes que, si eres muy detallista, entenderás muchas cosas.
The controversy dealt with here is what I liked the most, two very taboo subjects: intersexuality (or hermaphrodism) and forced transsexuality, hand in hand with the almost philosophical question that arises: if you had that condition and you wake up one day with the news that you are no longer X gender but another, would you seek to change it? From this, I understand that there have been real cases in which the people to whom it happened, did not culminate their story very well. It also makes us a strong reflection on the fact that we are the decisions we make in the past and, therefore, we already "predestine" our future towards one or several paths... but that is another topic. For the moment, I bid you farewell, but not before telling you as I always: "If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have already seen it, see it again, you can't lose anything".
La polémica tratada aquí es lo que más me gustó, dos temas muy tabú: la intersexualidad (o hermafrodismo) y transexualidad obligada, de la mano a la pregunta casi filosófica que surge: si tuvieras esa condición y te levantas un día con la noticia de que ya no eres X género sino otro, ¿buscarías cambiarlo? De esto, tengo entendido que han existidos casos reales en los que las personas a quienes les sucedió, no culminaron muy bien su historia. También nos hace una fuerte reflexión sobre que somos las decisiones que tomamos en el pasado y, por lo tanto, ya “predestinamos” nuestro futuro hacia uno o varios caminos… pero ese es otro tema. Por los momentos, me despido de ustedes, no sin antes decirles como siempre: “Si no la han visto, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene pérdida de nada”.
