The live-action adaptation of "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" is one of the most divisive Christmas movies out there, an obvious product of a series of highly questionable creative decisions that even after more than 20 years They continue to generate controversy and confusion among the public.
No wonder, the film directed by Ron Howard tried to deconstruct the original fable, retaining its essence but profoundly changing a series of aesthetic and narrative elements. The result? A visually fascinating nightmare that you either love or hate.
We must also remember that most of the forays of this bitter character into the most mainstream sectors of popular culture have always been faithful to Seuss' narration, and it is likely that for many a mention of the character will make them think of the 1966 animated adaptation in short form, or why not, the timid CGI version that Illumination gave us just a couple of years ago.
What's my point? That in an ocean of conservative clones, it is perfectly logical that people refuse to receive a remix that does not always seem to know how to justify its own irreverence.
The irony of the whole thing is that many people like me grew up with precisely this version, and far from being alarmed by its radicalism, we are quite accustomed to the chaos.
This same mentality made me very afraid to revisit it, since in my mind "The Grinch" is nothing more than a collection of random scenes and gags that I saw during Christmas, when before or after Christmas Eve rebroadcasts of this movie on cable television.
I'm not the only one, in fact, I think it's almost impossible to meet someone who can appreciate the genius of Ron Howard having grown up with the '66 version, and I can't blame them.
Don't get me wrong, even trying to leave any trace of subjectivity aside I find it impossible to conceive of this film as "the worst Christmas movie ever created", a title that would honestly fit better than any of the generic disasters that platforms like Netflix or Amazon prime decide to spit every year.
The point is that The Grinch is a film with character, above all things, and it knows how to revel in its own chaos in a way that is quite fascinating for the viewer, as if it were a slow motion crash that we cannot put down. to see
From the gothic nature of all the sets, costumes and character designs, to the excessive use of Dutch angles, to Jim Carrey's iconic performance in impressive makeup, How The Grinch Stole Christmas is a film that feels tangible, it has its own identity and knows how to immerse us in its twisted logic, for better or worse.
While this is probably the first time I've ever given it a chance from start to finish, it's surprising how many moments were seared into my mind, either because they felt genuinely funny when I was little, or because they deeply disturbed a space in my psyche.
What does all this mean? It is almost impossible for me to give a verdict, since I perfectly understand where the hundreds of complaints that this film has received since its release come from, but I infinitely respect that it knows how to convey so many things.

La adaptación live action de "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" (El clásico cuento del Dr Seuss) es una de las películas navideñas más divisivas que existen, un producto obvio de una serie de decisiones creativas bastante cuestionables que incluso luego de más de 20 años siguen generando polémica y desconcierto entre el publico.
No es para poco, el filme dirigido por Ron Howard trataba de deconstuir la fábula original, reteniendo la esencia de la mismo pero cambiando profundamente una serie de elementos estéticos y narrativos, ¿El resultado? Una pesadilla visualmente fascinante que o amas y odias.
Debemos recordar también que la mayoría de las incursiones de este amargado personaje en los sectores más mainstream de la cultura popular siempre han Sido fieles a la narración de Seuss, y probable que para muchos una mención del personaje les haga pensar en la adaptación animada de 1966 en forma de corto, o por qué no, la tímida versión en CGI que nos entregó illumination hace tan solo un par de años.
¿Cuál es mi punto? Que en un océano de clones conservadores, es perfectamente lógico que la gente se niegue a recibir un remix que no siempre parece saber justificar su propia irreverencia.
Lo irónico de todo el asunto es que mucha gente como yo creció con esta versión precisamente, y lejos de alarmarnos por su radicalismo, estamos bastante acostumbrados a el caos.
Esta misma mentalidad hizo que me diera mucho miedo revisitarla, puesto que en mi mente "El Grinch" no es más que un cumulo de escenas y gags aleatorios que ví a través de las navidades, cuando antes o después de noche buena pasaban retransmisiones de esta película en la televisión por cable.
No soy el único, de hecho, creo que es casi imposible encontrarse con alguien que pueda apreciar la genialidad de Ron Howard habiendo crecido con la versión del 66, y no puedo culparlos.
No me malinterpreten, incluso tratando de dejar cualquier rastro de subjetividad a un lado me parece imposible concebir está película como "la peor película de navidad que se ha creado", un título que honestamente le quedaría mejor a cualquiera de los desastres genéricos que plataformas como Netflix o Amazon prime deciden escupir cada año.
La cuestión es que The Grinch es una película con carácter, sobre todas las cosas, y sabe regodearse en su propio caos de forma en la que resulta bastante fascinante para el espectador, como si se tratase de un choque en cámara lenta que no podemos dejar de ver.
Desde la naturaleza gotica de todos los sets, el vestuario y los diseños de los personajes, hasta el uso excesivo de dutch angles, pasando por el icónico performance de Jim Carrey en un maquillaje impresionante, How The Grinch Stole Christmas es una película que se siente tangible, tiene una identidad propia y sabe sumergirnos dentro de su retorcida lógica, para bien o para mal.
Aunque es probable que está sea la primera vez en la vida que le di una oportunidad de principio a final, es sorprendente la cantidad de momentos que estaban grabados a fuego en mi mente, ya sea porque se sentían genuinamente divertidos cuando yo era pequeño, o porque pertubaron profundamente un espacio de mi psique.
¿Que quiere decir todo esto? Que para mí es casi imposible dar un veredicto, puesto que entiendo perfectamente de dónde vienen los cientos de quejas que está película ha recibido desde su estreno, pero respeto infinitamente que sepa transmitir tantas cosas.
