Have you ever felt like you have finally found that series that keeps giving you goosebumps from within your whole body system down to your mind because of the well crafted scenes, plot, characters and characterization, the actions and the dynamic play for power between the rich elite and the individuals in law. Well, guess what? I have found mine, and the series also happens to be the best finance TV show of all time for me and a ton of other die-hard fans. And this is series is no other that ‘Billions’ by Brian Koppelman and David Levien. But first,
For Viewer’s Discretion: This article is going to be fully detailed with my synopsis of the series, analysis of the characters and characterizations, with the impact of certain actions in the development of the series and its ever mind blowing finance lessons from the decisions made by the financial gurus in the TV show. Also I must say that I was truly inspired by the works of @jcrodriguez on movies and TV series. Initially, in my previous write-ups on movie reviews, I did not include enough characters and characterizations because I just dive into the movie build up without bearing in mind the roles the characters play. Even when I did it was just briefly. I came to the realization that the strong fan love I have for such TV series like The Originals, Power and Billions is because of the outstanding acting by the actors in portraying their individual roles within the show. I cannot even begin to applaud actors like Joseph Morgan, Daniel Gilles, Omari Hardwick, Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti for their brilliant portrayal of characters like Niklaus Mikhaelson, Elijah Mikhaelson, James St. Patrick, Bobby Axelrod and Chuck Rhoades respectively, because their acting is Emmy nomination worthy. Moreso, I will also try to do my solemn best in not disclosing too much spoilers, but I can’t promise much cause it all depends on where the writing takes me.
The Synopsis
Billions is a renowned television series originated in the United State of America from the collaboration of the brilliant minds of Brian Koppelman, David Levien and Andrew Ross Sorkin. The series is focused on the financial activities of the hedge fund company Axe Capital headed by Bobby Axelrod and the dedicated mission of the US Attorney General, Chuck Rhoades in bringing down billionaires that defile the laws of decency by manipulating the market in order to make immense profit and fluent high social class as well. The series is set in New York city and Connecticut where it helps to portray the lifestyle of successful hedge fund managers in the the big city of New York. I am more than hundred percent sure that the creator and show runner of this series made sure they used New York city as its setting because of the fact that New York city is well known to be the richest city because of the presence of a number of successful individuals presiding within the city and a total number of 99 billionaires also presiding within the city as well, thereby making it the richest city according to Forbes. With this alone, the New York City has given the series a prestigious setting that the show craves in order to portray the dynamics of power and wealth simultaneously.
In addition, the series also draws its inspiration from key incidences against financial crimes by the Big Boys
in Law. Like the first season drew its inspiration from the investigation undertaken by Preet Bharara from 2009 to 2017, where he prosecuted Steven Cohen, the hedge fund manager of S.A.C. Capital Advisors and the second season drew its inspiration from the manipulation of the United States Treasury Bond by the Salomon Brothers in 1991. Through the outstanding performance of the casts and their use of financial terminologies goes to show the amount of effort that has been put into the series in order to showcase the power of finance and its influence on its members in the field. I remember watching a late night show with Damian Lewis who play the lead character in the show known as Bobby Axelrod as the guest. Through his interview on live TV, I discovered that a lot goes into the production of each episodes from the creation of available workspace to serve as offices for various companies within the series, down to the casting of actors that can bring the melodramatic performance the show needs. Damian Lewis even made mention of how he had to spend quality time with a billionaire hedge fund manager in order to get a better understanding of how to portray his character. And that is not all, the series also shows brilliant scripting through the dialogue between the casts and their reactions towards certain outcomes which evolves in the series. All these and many more has brought tons of nominations and awards for the actors and TV show. Awards like

Why I love these characters
Bobby Axelrod
As I mentioned earlier on, he is the lead character and the manager of the hedge fund Axe capital. This character is played by Damian Lewis, a popular British actor known for his roles in series like Homeland and Band of Brothers and his enormous contribution to the world of theatre and the British theatre as well. Bobby Axelrod is a character that came from a humble background with a drunk as a father and a loving mother that supported his dreams and ambition. Bobby goes on to become a filthy rich billionaire by becoming a phenomenal tycoon that understands and plays the financial markets in order to make the best possible gains and he is always willing to do whatever it takes to win through his well calculated risk and driven by the hunger of wanting more to fill that not-good enough void he always felt because of his not so rich childhood. The character achieves all he wants; made a ton load of money, marries a beautiful wife, has two brilliant sons and fleet of properties and cars to his name. But as we all know, to whom much is given, much is also expected from.
I can’t begin to state the reasons why I admire this character so much because the reasons are enormous and if I should state them all, this article will definitely be too leniently. But I will just say a few,
His burning desire to become the best even when the odds are stacked up against him. Bobby exhibits that drive to always remain calm and look for the best possible solution in any given situation, it is the kind of skill you wish was inbuilt in you and you don’t have to strive to get it. This resilient ability of his has kept him in the game for so long and even two more steps ahead of his opponents.
His outstanding negotiating tactics: through billions, I have come to understand that in life, you never get what you deserve but you only get what you ask for. And I picked it up from the way Bobby Axelrod talks during negotiation meetings and his tactic of always soothsaying the other person to get the best out of them. A popular Bobby Axelrod’s quote which happens to be my favourite is if you can’t by the art, buy the artist. He said this after an art exhibition, when a certain billionaire beat him by purchasing an art masterpiece before Bobby could lay his hands on it. This made Bobby to offer the artist of the purchased art a deal where the artist will make arts for only him over a certain number of years stated in the contract and only Bobby has the right to sell these arts at any price and whenever he wants. This goes to prove that when you get your hands on a thing of immense value, try to lay your hands on the source because more can still be made.
Chuck Rhoades
Just like the basics of every work of theatre or entertainment, there is always the presence of an antagonist or an opposing factor. But here is the beauty of the series, you the viewer is left with the deciding factor of who your antagonist or opposing factor should be. For me, it happens to be Chuck Rhoades. Chuck Rhoades is the United States Attorney General that has a thing against billionaires whom he sometimes refer to as wealthy criminals. This is played by a talented actor known as Paul Giamatti who happens to be popular for movies like Saving Mr. Banks, Sideways,The illusionist and many more. The character Chuck Rhoades also happens to be a successful individual with a brilliant psychiatrist as his wife, beautiful children and a lovely home but not a billionaire. I may say this may even be the main reason for his true distaste for billionaires and the fact that they are extremely wealth and they feel like they can always buy their way out of justice. Also, I must say that Chuck Rhoades loves to portray himself as a common citizen but he fails to realize or even remember that he is from a wealthy home and he has always enjoyed the privilege of wealth, therefore he cannot identify himself as a commoner or even try to relate to the plights commoners experience. Although Chuck Rhoades happens to be my chosen antagonist in the show, I still respect and admire him for his brilliant developments in crafting out a master plan in bringing the billionaires to book. He is even a mastermind in plotting out traps for these billionaires to fall into while he waits for them at the other end with handcuffs and warrants. It is noteworthy to remember that Chuck Rhoades is a force that should never be underestimated because it is never game over for him.
Wendy Rhoades
Wendy Rhoades is the female lead character that has all my admiration and immense respect for her outstanding knowledge and versatility. She is that character in the series that always has something brilliant and mind-blowing to say because her IQ for processing information, reading behaviour, predicting behavioral outcome and giving a well deserved output is on a whole new level. She is a psychiatrist who also happens to be the performance coach for the staffs of Axe Capital, because of her outstanding wisdom and ability, she was able to help Axe build his company from the ground into the mega fund it is now, thereby making her the company’s star. Although this character is outstanding but she is also tangled up in her own dilemma, which happens to be the feud between her husband, Chuck Rhoades and her boss Bobby Axelrod. This feud constantly lives her in a position of picking side between both men and the always recurring fact that she has to choose which she should save, her marriage or her high paying job. The character Wendy Rhoades in the ongoing TV series ‘Billions’ is played by the popular American Actress Maggie Siff, known for her roles on AMC drama ‘Mad Men’ and FX drama ‘Sons of Anarchy’.
Taylor Mason
Taylor Mason is another female character that comes later on in the series, but she is not a psychiatrist or a performance coach, rather she is a financial guru that gives Bobby Axelrod a run for his money. She shows him that he is not the only one that can process an enormous amount of data, execute profitable trades and take brilliant investment choices. She also shows the dynamic play for power when she takes certain steps towards becoming a boss of her own, which also happens to be a strong threat to Bobby Axelrod because Taylor starting out on her own means losing influential investors for him. More so, actions taken by Taylor Mason in the series shows that she is definitely a force to lookout for because she is eager to surpass the success of her mentor Bobby Axelrod. This brilliant character is played by the American Actress known for her role as Brandy Epps in ‘Orange is the New Black’, Kate Dillion.
Also you can see that Billions is a series that is well packed with actions, suspense, intellectual dialogue and lots of financial and investment lessons. Thanks to the mastermind creators, script writer or writers, well experienced actors that makes up the casts and most of all the amount of effort and finance put into this show, which makes it my favourite TV series of all time. Thus, I must add, in upcoming articles from me, I will still talk about the financial and investment lessons have gotten from this series. If you want to gain an insight into the world of power and how money plays a predominant role in attaining power, then I highly recommend BILLIONS.

Recuerdo haber visto un programa nocturno con Damian Lewis, que interpreta al personaje principal de la serie conocido como Bobby Axelrod, como invitado. A través de su entrevista en la televisión en directo, descubrí que hay mucho que hacer en la producción de cada uno de los episodios, desde la creación de espacios de trabajo disponibles que sirvan de oficinas para varias empresas dentro de la serie, hasta el casting de actores que puedan aportar la actuación melodramática que el programa necesita. Por qué me gustan estos personajes
Bobby Axelrod
Como ya he mencionado anteriormente, es el personaje principal y el gestor del fondo de cobertura Axe capital. Este personaje está interpretado por Damian Lewis, un popular actor británico conocido por sus papeles en series como Homeland y Band of Brothers y su enorme contribución al mundo del teatro y al teatro británico también. Bobby Axelrod es un personaje de origen humilde con un padre borracho y una madre cariñosa que apoyó sus sueños y su ambición. Bobby llega a ser un multimillonario asquerosamente rico, convirtiéndose en un fenomenal magnate que entiende y juega con los mercados financieros para obtener las mejores ganancias posibles y siempre está dispuesto a hacer lo que sea necesario para ganar a través de su riesgo bien calculado e impulsado por el hambre de querer más para llenar ese vacío no lo suficientemente bueno que siempre sintió debido a su infancia no tan rica. El personaje consigue todo lo que quiere: ganar una tonelada de dinero, casarse con una bella esposa, tener dos hijos brillantes y una flota de propiedades y coches a su nombre. Pero como todos sabemos, a quien se le da mucho, también se espera mucho de él.
No puedo empezar a exponer las razones por las que admiro tanto a este personaje, porque las razones son enormes y si las expusiera todas, este artículo sería definitivamente demasiado indulgente. Pero sólo diré algunas,
Su ardiente deseo de convertirse en el mejor, incluso cuando las probabilidades están en su contra. Bobby muestra ese impulso de mantener siempre la calma y buscar la mejor solución posible en cualquier situación, es el tipo de habilidad que desearías que estuviera incorporada en ti y no tuvieras que esforzarte para conseguirla. Esta capacidad de resistencia suya le ha mantenido en el juego durante tanto tiempo e incluso dos pasos más por delante de sus oponentes.
Sus extraordinarias tácticas de negociación: a través de miles de millones, he llegado a comprender que en la vida nunca se obtiene lo que se merece, sino que sólo se consigue lo que se pide. Y lo aprendí de la forma en que Bobby Axelrod habla durante las reuniones de negociación y de su táctica de hablar siempre con la otra persona para sacar lo mejor de ella. Una cita popular de Bobby Axelrod, que resulta ser mi favorita, es que si no puedes comprar el arte, compra el artista. Lo dijo después de una exposición de arte, cuando cierto multimillonario le ganó comprando una obra de arte antes de que Bobby pudiera ponerle las manos encima. Esto hizo que Bobby ofreciera al artista de la obra comprada un trato en el que el artista haría obras de arte sólo para él durante un número determinado de años establecido en el contrato y sólo Bobby tendría derecho a vender esas obras a cualquier precio y cuando quisiera. Esto demuestra que cuando uno tiene en sus manos una cosa de inmenso valor, trata de poner sus manos en la fuente porque todavía se puede hacer más.
Chuck Rhoades
Como en toda obra de teatro o de entretenimiento, siempre hay un antagonista o un factor de oposición. Pero aquí está la belleza de la serie, tú, el espectador, tienes que decidir quién debe ser tu antagonista o factor opuesto. Para mí, resulta ser Chuck Rhoades. Chuck Rhoades es el Fiscal General de los Estados Unidos que tiene algo contra los multimillonarios a los que a veces se refiere como criminales ricos. Está interpretado por un talentoso actor conocido como Paul Giamatti que resulta ser popular por películas como Saving Mr. Banks, Sideways, The illusionist y muchas más. El personaje Chuck Rhoades también resulta ser un individuo de éxito con una brillante psiquiatra como esposa, hermosos hijos y una casa encantadora, pero no un multimillonario. Puedo decir que esta puede ser la razón principal de su verdadera aversión por los multimillonarios y el hecho de que sean extremadamente ricos y sientan que siempre pueden comprar su salida de la justicia. Además, debo decir que a Chuck Rhoades le encanta presentarse como un ciudadano común, pero no se da cuenta, ni siquiera recuerda, que procede de un hogar rico y que siempre ha disfrutado del privilegio de la riqueza, por lo que no puede identificarse como un plebeyo ni siquiera intentar relacionarse con las dificultades que experimentan los plebeyos. Aunque Chuck Rhoades es el antagonista que he elegido en la serie, le respeto y admiro por sus brillantes desarrollos en la elaboración de un plan maestro para llevar a los multimillonarios a la cárcel. Incluso es una mente maestra en la elaboración de trampas para que estos multimillonarios caigan en ellas mientras él les espera al otro lado con esposas y órdenes de arresto. Cabe recordar que Chuck Rhoades es una fuerza que nunca debe ser subestimada porque nunca es un juego terminado para él.
Wendy Rhoades
Wendy Rhoades es el personaje femenino principal que cuenta con toda mi admiración e inmenso respeto por su extraordinario conocimiento y versatilidad. Es ese personaje de la serie que siempre tiene algo brillante y alucinante que decir porque su coeficiente intelectual para procesar la información, leer el comportamiento, predecir el resultado de la conducta y dar una salida merecida está a otro nivel. Es una psiquiatra que también resulta ser la entrenadora de rendimiento para el personal de Axe Capital, debido a su extraordinaria sabiduría y habilidad, fue capaz de ayudar a Axe a construir su empresa desde el suelo hasta el mega fondo que es ahora, convirtiéndola así en la estrella de la empresa. Aunque este personaje es sobresaliente, también está enredado en su propio dilema, que resulta ser la disputa entre su marido, Chuck Rhoades y su jefe Bobby Axelrod. Esta disputa la pone constantemente en la tesitura de tener que elegir entre ambos hombres y el hecho siempre recurrente de tener que elegir qué debe salvar, si su matrimonio o su trabajo bien remunerado. El personaje de Wendy Rhoades en la serie de televisión "Billions" está interpretado por la popular actriz estadounidense Maggie Siff, conocida por sus papeles en la serie de AMC "Mad Men" y en la serie de FX "Sons of Anarchy".
Taylor Mason
Taylor Mason es otro personaje femenino que aparece más tarde en la serie, pero no es una psiquiatra o una entrenadora de rendimiento, sino una gurú financiera que le da a Bobby Axelrod una carrera por su dinero. Le muestra que no es el único que puede procesar una enorme cantidad de datos, ejecutar operaciones rentables y tomar decisiones de inversión brillantes. Además, las acciones realizadas por Taylor Mason en la serie demuestran que es definitivamente una fuerza a tener en cuenta porque está ansiosa por superar el éxito de su mentor Bobby Axelrod. También se puede ver que Billions es una serie bien cargada de acciones, suspense, diálogos intelectuales y muchas lecciones financieras y de inversión. Gracias a los magistrales creadores, al guionista o guionistas, a los experimentados actores que componen el reparto y, sobre todo, a la cantidad de esfuerzo y financiación que se ha puesto en esta serie, que la convierte en mi serie de televisión favorita de todos los tiempos. Por lo tanto, debo añadir que en los próximos artículos que publique, seguiré hablando de las lecciones financieras y de inversión que he obtenido de esta serie.
