I went into this movie only really knowing that it was a prison movie about inmates who did something around theater and acting which was exactly what it was. I had good hopes as I generally enjoy Prison Movies with the Shawshank Redemption as one of my all-time favorites. It gets a 7.7 on Imdb while I saw it in some list this or last year. At the same time I don't really have anything with theater and generally dislike movies that have too much of that in them. I remember watching Theater Camp last year which ended up as one of my least liked movies as it was basically 80% of the time some kids doing weird acting.
Sing Sing (6.0/10)
Spoiler-Free Movie Plot:
"Divine G, imprisoned at Sing Sing for a crime he didn't commit, finds purpose by acting in a theatre group alongside other incarcerated men in this story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art. The movie is supposed to be based on real-life events and many of the actors used to be real inmates."
So I guess the main theme of this movie is that art in whatever form matters and can help people in many different ways. I did really like the main actor in the film but overall purely on personal preference, this simply wasn't for me. I in a way felt it was similar to Theater Camp where most of the movie this time were some inmates trying to do some silly acting. I missed the feeling of a real prison life as it could have been just taken place inside of an acting school without that the movie being that much different. I also didn't really get the main message the movie was trying to communicate.
Trailer: I actually didn't watch the trailer before watching the movie but I can say it perfectly embodies the actual movie and doesn't really spoil anything.
So I can't say I overly enjoyed Sing Sing, this is purely subjective while I get that some people really are into something like this which the ImDb score also indicates. I'm personally giving it a 6.0/10
