En vísperas de la nueva temporada de House Of The Dragon he estado revisando, otra vez, las primeras temporadas de Game Of Thrones. Mucha calidad en historia, personajes y giros sangrientos... sobre todo giros sangrientos. Es imposible no llenarse de nostalgia al volver a mirar una de las mejores series de Tv de todos los tiempos. Y lo digo con toda propiedad. Ahora bien, intentando buscar argumentos como para convencerme de que en realidad el final de GOT no perjudicó a la serie completa, he recopilado algunas teorías del porqué su final fue tan mal visto, incluso por mí. Lo que aquí expondré es solo mi opinión personal, esperando que te animes a dar la tuya también.

On the eve of the new season of House Of The Dragon I've been revisiting, again, the early seasons of Game Of Thrones. Lots of quality story, characters and gory twists... mostly gory twists. It's impossible not to be filled with nostalgia when re-watching one of the best TV series of all time. And I say that with all propriety. Now, trying to find arguments as to convince me that in fact the end of GOT did not hurt the whole series, I have compiled some theories as to why its ending was so badly seen, even by me. What I'll expose here is just my personal opinion, hoping you'll be encouraged to give yours too.Where did GOT go wrong? Here are some reasons:

George R. R. Martin, escritor de la saga de libros "A Song of Ice and Fire", terminó la última entrega de esta por allá en el 2012. Les hablo del quinto libro, de más de mil páginas, reducidas a una trama argumental con muchos cabos sueltos. GOT se estrenó en el 2011. Las primeras temporadas fueron adaptadas casi en su totalidad de los libros de Martin, salvo algunos cambios obvios que demanda toda adaptación. El problema es que, al menos creo yo, Martin se enredó tanto al engordar su obra que los escritores de la serie de televisión tuvieron que tomar medidas sobre la conducción de cada trama y personaje. GOT dejó a un lado los libros para tomar su propio camino, pero, ¿estuvo Martin de acuerdo? Yo creo que sí... yo creo que el escritor de los libros, desde el principio, les dijo a los guionistas qué dirección tomar.
Y esto es algo muy obvio.
Si te fijas en la segunda temporada (atención espóiler) Daenerys visita el templo de los inmortales en Qarth para rescatar a sus dragones: allí se nos presentó la visión de un salón del trono devastado, lleno de hielo y cenizas. La complementación del muro de hielo hacía referencia a Jon Snow, Khal Drogo, a la muerte. Todo iba en esa dirección. El problema no fue el final en sí, sino el "cómo se llegó a ese final".
Hubo muchos vacíos entre una cosa y otra; huecos que fueron rellenados con tramas bastante rápidas e incoherentes, al menos para una serie de gran envergadura como lo fue GOT.

A plot gap
George R. R. Martin, writer of the book saga “A Song of Ice and Fire”, finished the last installment of this one back in 2012. I'm talking about the fifth book, with more than a thousand pages, reduced to a plot with many loose ends. GOT premiered in 2011. The first seasons were adapted almost entirely from Martin's books, except for some obvious changes that every adaptation demands. The problem is that, at least I think, Martin got so convoluted in fattening up his work that the writers of the TV series had to take action on driving every plot and character. GOT set aside the books to go its own way, but did Martin agree? I think so... I think the writer of the books, from the beginning, told the writers what direction to take.
And this is something very obvious.
If you look at the second season (attention spoiler) Daenerys visits the temple of the immortals in Qarth to rescue her dragons: there we were presented with the vision of a devastated throne room, full of ice and ashes. The completion of the ice wall referred to Jon Snow, Khal Drogo, death. Everything was going in that direction. The problem was not the ending itself, but the “how that ending came to be”.
There were a lot of gaps between one thing and another; gaps that were filled in with rather quick and incoherent plots, at least for a major series like GOT was.

Agotamiento de los productores y guionistas
Las dos últimas temporadas de GOT demostraron que David Benioff y D. B. Weiss querían acabar rápido con todo. Y es que, tras más de nueve años trabajando para llevarnos algo bueno que ver los domingos en HBO, se sobreentiende que hayan querido unas vacaciones inmediatas. George R. R. Martin había dicho, en alguna entrevista, que GOT necesitaba más temporadas de las previstas para lograr tener un cierre digno y maravilloso. Fue un reto que ni Benioff ni Weiss quisieron correr. ¿Eso los hace menos ambiciosos? Tal vez sí, aunque esta decisión les elevó el reto creativo para finalizar una serie de televisión de trayectoria.
Al final de cuentas, nos dieron dos grandes batallas: la del norte con los caminantes blancos, y la del sur con Cersei. Ambas fueron volando. Todo se fue volando en realidad, y no en los lomos de un dragón.

En un santiamén, Daenerys perdió todo, y en otro santiamén, se volvió loca. Dos de sus dragones fueron asesinados de manera sencilla, como si matar a un dragón fuera igual de fácil que cazar a un pato. ¿Jon snow buscando un muerto al otro lado del muro para convencer a Cersei Lannister de detener la guerra? ¡Pero qué cojones! XD. O sea, no es que los eventos hubiesen sido malos: la forma en la que se desarrollaron, sí lo son.

The last two seasons of GOT showed that David Benioff and D. B. Weiss wanted to end it all quickly. After more than nine years working to bring us something good to watch on Sundays on HBO, it is understandable that they wanted an immediate vacation. George R. R. Martin had said, in an interview, that GOT needed more seasons than planned to achieve a worthy and wonderful closure. It was a challenge that neither Benioff nor Weiss wanted to take. Does that make them less ambitious? Maybe yes, although this decision did raise the creative challenge for them to finish a long-running TV series.
At the end of the day, they gave us two great battles: the northern one with the White Walkers, and the southern one with Cersei. They both flew by. Everything actually flew away, and not on the backs of a dragon.

In a heartbeat, Daenerys lost everything, and in another heartbeat, she went mad. Two of her dragons were killed in a simple manner, as if killing a dragon was just as easy as hunting a duck. Jon snow looking for a dead guy on the other side of the wall to convince Cersei Lannister to stop the war? What the fuck! XD. I mean, it's not that the events would have been bad: the way they unfolded, they are.

Expectativas altas
Creo que cada uno de nosotros tenía grandes expectativas para el final de GOT. Eso, de cierto modo, jugó en contra de lo que finalmente vimos en pantalla. No fue cómo muchos quisieron... no hubo una conexión grande con el episodio final. No fue poético, aunque intentó serlo. A mí me pareció un mar de guiños a la saga de Tolkien: algo agridulce que fue más amargo que cualquier otra cosa. Yo no esperaba un final feliz, pero tampoco uno tan drástico. Entonces, lo que vimos fue una reducción de calidad, algo que terminó por desilusionar a muchos fans.
¿Qué hubiera preferido yo?
Un poco más de argumento entre una trama y otra: que GOT hubiese recuperado la naturaleza de las primeras temporadas. Pero al final de cuentas, el material que tenemos es el único que hay. No hay mucho que se pueda hacer, y dudo que se reescriban las últimas dos temporadas, como muchos fans quisieron.

High Expectations
I think each of us had high expectations for the ending of GOT. That, in a way, played against what we ultimately saw on screen. It wasn't how a lot of people wanted it to be.... there wasn't a big connection to the final episode. It wasn't poetic, though it tried to be. To me it seemed like a sea of nods to Tolkien's saga: something bittersweet that was more bitter than anything else. I wasn't expecting a happy ending, but not such a drastic one either. So, what we saw was a reduction in quality, something that ended up disappointing many fans.
What would I have preferred?
A little more plot between one plot and another: that GOT would have recovered the nature of the first seasons. But at the end of the day, the material we have is all there is. There's not much that can be done, and I doubt that the last two seasons will be rewritten, as many fans wanted.

Game Of Thrones fue una serie de Tv única en su género, capaz de lograr hazañas maravillosas. No creo que su final haya perjudicado de alguna manera el resto de la obra. Como dije antes, tenemos lo que hay, y eso contempla las dos últimas temporadas, por muy malas que hayan sido. He visto que, por ejemplo, sagas ya adaptadas como la de Harry Potter volverán a la pantalla, ¿puede Got hacerlo también con más fidelidad a la obra original de Martin? Eso está difícil, en parte, porque ni Martin ha terminado la historia, XD.
En fin, sigo disfrutando de GOT. Y ahora, de su spinn of más reciente: House Of The Dragon.

Conclusion
Game Of Thrones was a unique TV series in its genre, capable of marvelous feats. I don't think its ending in any way detracted from the rest of the show. As I said before, we got what we got, and that contemplates the last two seasons, as bad as they were. I have seen that, for example, already adapted sagas such as Harry Potter will return to the screen, can Got also do so with more fidelity to Martin's original work? That's difficult, in part, because even Martin hasn't finished the story, XD.
Anyway, I'm still enjoying GOT. And now, of its most recent spinn of: House Of The Dragon.
